10 Continuity Errors And Plot Holes In Black Swan

2010 was an impressive year for cinema. We had Inception, Shutter Island, and Toy Story 3 all released within months. Sitting with them, however, was Natalie Portman’s incredible psychological thriller-horror Black Swan. Just a few years after the Star Wars prequels, she managed to remind the world that she was a phenomenal actress by presenting us while a role that was in equal parts charming and psychotic.
While the story of the film was bold and a lot of belief had to be (purposefully) suspended to take it all in, there were a few slip-ups here and there. We’ve put together a list of the ten biggest errors in continuity and plot in Black Swan.
10 The Tattoo’s Presence
Throughout Black Swan, we see a variety of characters who really live and breathe ballet. While Natalie Portman’s Nina is the most obvious, the meaning behind Mila Kunis’ tattoo is obvious: it’s a pair of huge black wings on her back.
No matter how much they fit the storyline of the film (and even Swan Lake itself), there is no way that she’d have been allowed to perform in such a carefully constructed performance with the tattoo still visible as she does in the film.
9 The Tattoo’s Lack Of Presence
Speaking of the tattoo, Mila Kunis obviously doesn’t have this on her back in real life as she does in the film. During one of her rehearsals when Nina is watching from afar, it is clear that Lily doesn’t have the tattoo at that moment, suggesting that the make-up department assumed it wasn’t necessary to re-apply it for such a short scene shot from so far away.
8 Re-pouring Champagne
Despite it being in a big, bright room full of hundreds of people, one of the most unnerving scenes in the film came when Nina was standing on the stairs with Leroy as he announced that she was the new star of his show.
Her glass seems to be filling backward, though: at the start of the scene she seems to have had a few sips already, but by the end, it’s basically full again.
7 The Camera In The Mirror
When Nina comes home to her mother after revealing that she got the part of the Black/White Swan, look carefully in the mirror as she enters the house. Unless there was a robbery sub-plot we didn’t know about, the man you can see slightly in the mirror must have been a camera operator.
6 The Black Bar
We have no idea how this one actually ended up happening or was missed in the editing process, but here we are.
Look carefully at the left of the screen during Nina’s transformation into the Black Swan and you’ll see that a small black bar appears- a camera problem? Perhaps it’s the light, but it’s more likely that this is a mistake on the part of the cameraman.
5 The Moving Arms
During a conversation with Leroy, we can see David from in front and behind, thanks to a mirror. In certain shots, it is clear that David’s arms are by his side as they are talking. However, when the camera moves over to show him in the mirror, it seems that he actually has his arms crossed.
4 The Moving Scarf
During one scene in which Nina is returning home from her ballet practice, we watch her open the front door while her scarf is around her neck.
Without moving her arms away from the door, she is somehow able to move her scarf from her neck to over her arm. Unless it fell off in the blink of an eye, we don’t know how this one happened.
3 Looking Away During A Conversation?
One of the most obvious errors in the film is one of its most jarring. Lily manages to convince Nina to come to a bar with her one night, and the two sit down with Lily on the right. For some reason, the two look in the opposite direction to where the other one is, making it look like they’re both looking away from each other as they are speaking. It’s very confusing.
2 Magical Lipstick
On her way to meet with Leroy, we see Nina apply some lipstick in an attempt to appeal to him and land the role she desires. The very same lipstick is still on when she actually goes into his office.
However, she doesn’t seem to be wearing any lipstick in the scene in-between these two, suggesting that the filmmakers took their eye off the continuity ball for a moment there.
1 Ballet Specifics
Darren Aronofsky is known for his attention to detail as a filmmaker, but even he can be let off for missing this one. Certain ballet aficionados have pointed out an issue with the approach taken to Swan Lake in Black Swan. The Bolshoi choreography used in the film is a classic Russian approach that stays true to the original, but the idea of having Rothbart cursing Odette is apparently an American change to the plot of Swan Lake that traditional Russian companies wouldn’t make.
