10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

The hit Netflix crime drama Mindhunter has found unprecedented popularity as well as critical acclaim. Unlike other police procedurals, this David Fincher series takes off from a more cerebral, academic standpoint as it looks into the development of criminal profiling within the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit (BSU), then in its nascent stages.

The BSU, now known as the Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU), studied serial murderers with the ultimate aim of preventing or at least being able to catch such criminals in the future. Some of the darkest, most disturbing moments on the show arise from the description of horrifying crimes as given by the police, the survivors, or the killers themselves, and the perspective of the murderers as they offer insights into their own depravity. Here are ten of the darkest Mindhunter moments.

10 Brian Watching A Child

10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

FBI Special Agent Bill Tench has a troubled home life, which becomes much worse when his eight-year-old adopted son is found guilty of involvement in the appalling murder of a toddler.

Tench and his wife Nancy are naturally devastated at the shocking turn of events. One of the darkest moments involving Brian happens when the latter escapes his mother’s watchful eyes and is found later on in the local park, simply staring at another child, a little girl in a swing. Now, under normal circumstances, this might have come across as only mildly creepy, but this was a child who had witnessed, and even somewhat participated in, the torture and murder of a much younger child, so to see him silently watching a kid was rather unnerving.

9 The Brudos Interview

10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

Jerry Brudos was a serial killer Holden and Tench interviewed as part of their study of criminal psychology. Brudos is, in fact, one of the many real-life killers the show features.

Agent Ford decides to lure the killer into opening up about himself and his crimes with a pair of women’s heels, because Brudos had a fetish for women’s shoes. To provoke him into talking, Holden brought his attention to the shoes he had purchased expressly for that purpose, and in a very dark moment, the serial killer was uncomfortably excited by the heels, despite the fact that there were agents present.

8 Mothers Of The Atlanta Child Murder Victims

10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

One of the most infamous cases of serial killing in history, the Atlanta Child Murder Case was covered by Mindhunter in its second season. Special Agent Holden Ford ends up in Atlanta to interview two serial killers as part of the BSU project when he comes across a group of grieving mothers.

The sheer agony and despair of the frightened, helpless mothers whose voices have gone unheard as their kids continued to turn up dead or missing, is difficult to watch. The realization that politics and power play at the highest level can lead to the disregard of such heinous crimes where a predator is on the loose and young children’s lives are at stake hits hard.

7 The Murdered Child Crime Scene

10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

In season 2, Bill and Nancy are contacted by the local police about the dead body found in the property Nancy had been looking to sell. When Bill visits the house the next day, the police are still there and he is invited in to take a look at the crime scene–perks of being an expert with the FBI.

However, what Bill sees is heart-wrenching. The X marks the spot indicates that the victim was a little child, no more than a toddler. The police corroborate this when they tell him that the child had only been twenty-two months. Bill then takes a look at the crime scene photos that show the toddler crucified to a cross, with a rag across his face. The violence and cruelty behind the murder that later turns out to have been committed by a bunch of kids, Bill’s son included, is difficult to fathom.

6 The Beverly Jean Murder Photos

10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

The first season sees Ford and Tench put their expertise to use in investigating the horrific murder of a young woman named Beverly Jean in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

The scene where the police inspector in charge of the investigation reveals the disturbing details of the crime to the FBI agents, and the latter are shown photographs of the mutilated corpse as they sit in a dimly lit diner, is very dark indeed. One could easily need to pause for a minute before they can continue watching.

5 The BTK Survivor

10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

The series features several true crime stories, one of which is about the BTK killer, short for Bind-Torture-Kill. The BTK killer had been active from 1974 until 1991 (with some gaps in between) but managed to evade arrest until 2005.

In one of the most powerful scenes in season 2, Bill Tench gets an interview with the sole survivor of the BTK killer in what is presumed to be one of his earliest kills. The survivor, a young man, recounts the terrifying experience of being bound and tortured by the killer who had then gone on to murder his whole family. The moment is superbly crafted and shot with stark sensitivity, never panning the camera on to the survivor’s face. In fact, Bill himself has his back to the young man throughout their conversation, justifying the distance from the camera’s gaze.

4 Ed Kemper’s Second Meeting

10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

Another real-life killer portrayed with eerie perfection by actor Cameron Britton is Ed Kemper, the co-ed killer who raped and murdered multiple young women and also killed his mother and grandparents. Kemper is the only serial killer who appears in both seasons 1 and 2.

During Ford’s second meeting with Kemper, the former opens up to him about his girlfriend in hopes of getting the latter to spill the beans on his own thoughts on women. Kemper is garrulous enough and responds immediately. The language he then uses when he discusses women with Holden offers a window into his depraved view of women and sexuality, and would send a chill down the spine of even the most hardened FBI agent.

3 The Tex Interview

10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

Those who take a keen interest in true crime would know that Tex Watson was one of the main culprits responsible for the notorious Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969.

Watson was a member of the Manson Family, a cult group led by Charles Manson, and had murdered the actress Sharon Tate along with several others in what remains one of the most notorious crimes in the history of Hollywood. Holden interviews Tex, who tells him about the night of the murder and how he had been inspired and ordered by Manson not to leave a single person alive. Tex seems lucid enough and expresses remorse, but that doesn’t take away from the horrific nature of the crime he had committed.

2 Ed Kemper’s Third Meeting

10 Darkest Mindhunter Moments

In Ford’s third meeting with Kemper, he is accompanied by Tench, who has finally conceded to meet the man who repulses him with his absolute lack of remorse.

Indeed, Kemper goes on to explain his methods with almost clinical precision and complete detachment; he goes as far as to show Tench and Ford how he had developed and evolved his art–so to speak–and perfected his technique over the years. The lack of emotion and matter of fact tone of a horrifying murderer giving an account of his own crimes is one of the darkest moments not just in Mindhunter, but probably in any series on Netflix.

1 The Beverly Jean Murder Revelation

The Beverley Jean murder in season 1 was unsettling to say the least, especially when it was revealed that more than one person had been involved in the murder.

The FBI agents finally get to the bottom of it, after the fiancé’s sister confesses and the agents repeatedly interrogate the fiancé himself and his brother in law. It is finally revealed that all three had been involved in the grisly murder and rape of the young woman, exposing a level of viciousness, insanity, and diabolical behavior that violates the very fabric of humanity.
