10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

Humanity has dealt with all kinds of sci-fi invaders on the big screen over the years, from distant alien galaxies and dimensions that highlight the mystery of the great unknown in the farthest reaches of space, though sometimes the threat comes from a little bit closer to home, right here in our own galaxy.

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun and one of our closest planetary neighbors, so it has featured in a number of cinematic films that have ranged from hopeful exploration to horrifying invasions over the years, but which of the Martian invaders that we’ve seen on film were the deadliest?

10 Spaced Invaders (1990)

10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

The Martian invaders from 1990’s Spaced Invaders may not seem to be that deadly initially, as they are quite foolish and only arrived on Earth after picking up a rebroadcast of Orson Welles’s radio play The War of the Worlds, which makes them think they are late for an invasion.

The bumbling team of Martians is separated from their main attacking Martian fleet and end up enjoying some trick-or-treating on Halloween before they are forced to help stop their own advanced technology from destroying the planet.

9 It! The Terror From Beyond Space (1958)

10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

1958’s It! The Terror From Beyond Space chronicles a potential invasion by a stowaway alien monster from the planet Mars after a rescue mission to the red planet returned to Earth with the creature on board the spaceship.

The sole survivor of the mission recounts his crew’s initial battle against the alien monster, which almost took out the rescue crew as well after it slipped aboard the craft and began to drain their bodies of fluids, though it was killed on the trip back to Earth using an airlock decompression of the ship.

8 The Last Days on Mars (2013)

10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

Set in the near future after humanity has managed to set up an outpost for exploration on Mars, 2013’s The Last Day On Mars revealed a dangerous threat that was discovered on the final day of the expedition.

A biological fungus was discovered that soon transforms the crew of the outpost into zombie-like monsters that continue to spread the infection until only one crew member is left, hoping for rescue from the inbound spaceship but potentially contaminated with the zombie infection that could make it’s way back to Earth and decimate humanity.

7 Flash Gordon: Mars Attacks The World (1938)

10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

While Flash Gordon’s Trip To Mars was originally released as a serial, it was later re-released as a feature-length film in 1938 under the title Mars Attacks the World due to the popularity of H.G. Wells’ other Martian classic.

While Flash Gordon usually dealt with the threats from the planet Mongo, this time Ming the Merciless teamed up with Mars’ evil Queen Azura to attack Earth with a giant Nitronic ray that would destroy Earth’s atmosphere and prepare it for Azura’s Martian forces, though Ming only wanted to destroy the planet, though Flash Gordon was able to stop them.

6 The Day Mars Invaded Earth (1963)

10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

While a number of alien invader films feature huge armadas and grotesque alien beings, 1963’s The Day Mars Invaded Earth features a clandestine invasion of Martian energy beings that transmitted themselves to Earth using humanity’s own technology.

These Martians were able to make perfect duplicates of the bodies they are transmitted into, and they soon take over and replace an entire family. The film ends as the Martian doubles leave their home and expand the quiet takeover of Earth while the evidence of their invasion (and their human doubles) disappears behind them.

5 Invaders From Mars (1986)

10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

There have been two versions of Invaders From Mars released over the years, with Tobe Hooper’s 1986 remake of the 1953 horror classic standing out as the deadlier versions of Martians, though both used terrifying methods for their invasion.

After a Martian spaceship crashed in the backfield of a farmer’s property, a town slowly starts to fall under the control of alien implants that are controlled by a giant mutated brain while the Martians themselves are bulbous, toothy monsters. While the invasion is later teased as only a dream, it is revealed as a genuine prophetic warning.

4 Life (2017)

10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

2017’s Life largely took place aboard the International Space Station after a prove returns from Mars with the first recorded sign of extraterrestrial life that the scientists waste no time in bringing back to life.

The single-cell organism rapidly evolved into a multi-cell organism before evolving into a sentient organism that begins to attack and kill the crew after it felt attacked during testing. The creature, named Calvin by a school on Earth, managed to hitch a ride down to the planet, where it was seen growing uncontrollably in the escape pod, ready to infect the planet.

3 Species II (1998)

10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

While the original Species film created its alien/human hybrid using information sent from an unknown extraterrestrial source, the 1998 sequel Species II reveals that the alien’s actually come from Mars when a new version infects a manned mission on their way home to Earth.

One of the infected male astronauts is able to escape quarantine, and his overcharged sex drive leads him to impregnate a number of human women who quickly give birth to an army of alien/human hybrid children, though the majority of the alien offspring were destroyed along with the surviving adult hybrids before they grew out of control.

2 War of the Worlds (2005)

10 Deadliest Cinematic Martian Invaders Ranked

When H.G. Wells’ The War of the Worlds was broadcast over the radio by Orson Welles, it created momentary mass hysteria as people truly believed that a Martian invasion was happening, kicking off a series of sci-fi adaptations of the popular novel.

2005’s War of the Worlds from Steven Spielberg was loosely based on the original story and featured devastating Martian machines called Tripods, which were revealed to have been buried underground for millions of years. Earth-borne diseases and bacteria managed to take out the unstoppable invaders, luckily.

1 Mars Attacks! (1996)

While Mars Attacks! may have originated as a cult hit trading card series, it was inspired by years of similar Martian and flying saucer invasion films that featured horrifyingly oversexualized Martians as they attacked humanity.

Tim Burton would later bring Mars Attacks! to the big screen in 1996 with a star-studded cast that unleashed Mars on Earth in gruesome fashion with high-tech weaponry and spaceships, though the aliens were eventually taken out by the high-pitched frequencies of Slim Whitman’s “Indian Love Call,” which caused their oversized heads to explode.
