San Andreas is a 2015 Dwayne Johnson blockbuster vehicle (no relation to GTA) about a series of massive scale earthquakes that rupture the region around the San Andreas Fault. Johnson plays a helicopter rescuer who enlists his wife Emma (Carla Gugino) to rescue their daughter Blake (Alexandra Daddario) from a devastated San Francisco area.
The movie is a major success, with praise going to the performances and the visual effects and criticism to the screenplay. But it fits well with other disaster movies on its wake. Here are just several to check out with the same intensity as San Andreas.
10 The Core (2003)
A sort of obscure disaster movie, The Core revolves on the instability of the Earth’s magnetic field that exposes the planet to radiation, creating a series of cataclysms. A team is then sent to drill the center of the Earth and set off nuclear explosion to restart the Earth’s rotation.
The movie packs an ensemble cast that includes Aaron Eckhart, Hilary Swank, Stanley Tucci, Bruce Greenwood and Alfre Woodard. And while it is painfully aware of its ludicrous setting and B-movie plot, it is a fun sci-fi with lofty visuals.
9 The Wave (2015)
The Wave is a Norwegian disaster film about a forecasted tsunami that was resulted from a crevasse avalanche. However, the citizens below the Geiranger fjord are not prepared for a more violent 85-meter tsunami. Those citizens include 40-year old geologist Kristian Eikjord (Kristoffer Joner), who finds solace with his family.
This disaster film gives more emphasis on the family drama and smartly uses the titular “wave” as a future event to illustrate the trauma. On the cataclysm itself, it was presented seamlessly on a gut-punching pay-off. It is truly effective.
8 Volcano (1997)
Volcano features Tommy Lee Jones as Mike Roark, the head of the LA County Office of Emergency Management who faces the threat of magma activity coming from the La Brea Tar Pits. As it nearly became too late to save the city, Roark and his team must divert the lava flow to the city streets.
While the film is the lesser cousin to that year’s fellow volcano movie, Dante’s Peak, it boasts Jones’ effort as front and center. And he and the impressive lava sequences sums up its man-versus-nature scenario.
7 The Quake (2018)
Back again in Norway, The Quake is the sequel to The Wave, wherein geologist Kristian Eikjord (Joner) is plunged back to the frame when a forecast of an 8.5 magnitude earthquake threatens the capital city of Oslo. Once again, he has to deal with that alerted phenomenon with his family.
It is incredible how those two films depict its visually enticing disaster sequence by placing its core family drama and its subversive disaster storytelling as its focus. For that, The Quake serves as a strong companion piece to The Wave.
6 The Impossible (2012)
Based on the real-life experience of María Belón and her family, The Impossible tells the story of a family who are vacationing in Indonesia until the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami set them apart. The family matriarch Maria (Naomi Watts) and her eldest son Lucas (Tom Holland) struggle to reunite with patriarch Henry (Ewan McGregor) and young sons Thomas and Simon.
Like the previous entries of this list, amidst its notable disaster visuals, the true highlight is on the core family drama. And Watts embodies that crescendo with a heart-wrenching performance.
5 Earthquake (1974)
1974’s Earthquake came at a time when disaster movies was a huge and innovative trend in the 70’s. As aptly implied by its title, this movie centers on a devastating earthquake that destroys most of Los Angeles and a motley cast of characters who need to escape the crumbling city.
This movie hits the two major pointers for a standard disaster film: an ensemble cast (including Charlton Heston, Ava Gardner, George Kennedy, Richard Roundtree and Walter Matthau) and visual (and sound) spectacle over story. It is a standard thrill ride.
4 The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
From disaster movie event honcho Roland Emmerich comes his own take of climate change. The Day After Tomorrow revolves the Earth facing a new form of ice age, caused by weather alterations in the Northern Hemisphere. At the center of the fray is paleoclimatologist Jack Hall (Dennis Quaid), who must rescue his son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) in frigid New York.
The Day After Tomorrow hits all the marks for a typical Roland Emmerich disaster film, despite its ludicrous science. Still, it gave tornadoes in LA and waves in New York.
3 Godzilla (2014)
The second American reboot of Toho’s icon, the 2014 Godzilla serves as the first film of the MonsterVerse franchise that plans to adapt many Toho monsters onscreen, plus King Kong. But for this case, this 30th Godzilla film centers on the showdown of the titular monster against two kaijus, known as MUTOs, and the struggle of the humans lurking below.
Unlike the 1998 adaptation, this Godzilla stayed faithful to interpreting the gigantic lizard. Despite its limited screentime, as well as Bryan Cranston, its city-toppling showdowns are a delight to watch.
2 Independence Day (1996)
Arguably the best Roland Emmerich project in his filmography, Independence Day is a true movie event about a series of major city extraterrestrial attacks that prompted humanity to fight back in the Fourth of July. More focus is on fighter pilot Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) and engineer David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum) as they plan to destroy the alien mothership.
While it is boastful on its alien-destruction spectacle, Independence Day balances that out with amusing characters and self-awareness of its setting. It is a fun blockbuster with the most awesome movie speech from Bill Pullman.

Finally, the Roland Emmerich disaster movie to end all Roland Emmerich disaster movies, 2012 revolves on the Mayan calendar superstition that pronounces that the world will end on winter solstice, 21st of December 2012. Though, its focus is on novelist-turned-limousine driver Jackson Curtis (John Cusack) escaping earthquake-ridden LA and finding refuge on huge evacuation arks.
At the forefront of its premise and its marketing are the impressive disaster-movie effects, from the Los Angeles escape to the gigantic tsunamis. San Andreas can even feel like a 2012 cutscene. That is how utterly massive the movie is.
