10 Disney Characters We Almost Got (But Didnt)

From the vintage classics like Mickey, Donald, and Goofy to the more contemporary members like Nick Wilde, and Buzz Lightyear, the world of Disney animated masterpieces is heavily inhabited by some of the world’s most beloved characters ever put to screen. But for every marvelous mainstay, there’s a fallen figure that never left the cutting room floor.

While most fans are absolutely enraptured by the number of lovable characters that did make it into the annals of Disney history, some never made it out of the sketchbook. Some worked, some didn’t, but all deserve a little more recognition from today’s audiences.

10 Redfeather (Pocahontas)

Disney’s Pocahontas has always been a bit of a mixed bag, historical inaccuracies aside. It was made during a time when the studio said “let’s try something different.” However, one thing that was true to form was its animal sidekicks. But before Meeko and Flit, there was Redfeather.

Redfeather was a talking turkey, created for John Candy before his death, that made it as far as a pencil test. But eventually, Disney decided to skip the talking-animal motif, and it was bye-bye birdie.

9 The Music Box (Beauty and the Beast)

Before there was Chip, there was the Music Box. Intended to be Beauty and the Beast’s cutesy character, the living music box was a little sidekick-type who can be seen in sketches intended for the movie.

However, eventually, the directors landed on Chip instead, and the music box did not become a major part of the movie.

8 The Valkeries (Fantasia)

Fantasia was Walt Disney’s experimental passion project. And while viewers might be familiar with the likes of “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice,” “Night on Bald Mountain,” and “Dance of the Hours,” There were several other pieces of music that were considered for the project.

One such deleted segment was to have been a literal animated adaptation of Wagner’s “Ride of the Valkeries” with artwork by Kay Nielsen. This would have been a sweeping epic feature to the Fantasia lineup, but it ultimately didn’t make the cut.

7 Aladdin’s Mother (Aladdin)

At one point, Aladdin stepped out of the Disney protagonist mold and actually had a surviving parental figure. In the early drafts of the film, Aladdin’s mother was a key player in the story.

Trying to gain a better life for him and his mother, Aladdin was planned to sing “Proud of Your Boy” before Jafar whisked him off to the Cave of Wonders. The filmmakers soon decided that the mom angle was going nowhere, so she was promptly cut from the final product.

6 Tiger (Toy Story)

Now here’s where things start to take a dark turn. In early drafts of Pixar’s Toy Story, viewers were introduced to the horror’s of Sid’s room through a tiger teething ring inspired by Clint from Jaws.

In a deleted scene, Tiger elates the story of Shakes the Rattle and how he met a horrific fate at the hands of Sid Philips. The scene was deemed too scary and, obviously, never made it out of storyboards.

5 Captain Gore (The Haunted Mansion)

Taking a trip to the parks, yet another character cut for being too scary was the Haunted Mansion’s, Captain Gore. This murderous sea captain was secretly a pirate in disguise living in the titular mansion in New Orleans Square. When his wife discovered his identity, she quickly met her demise.

While the character was revived for the Haunted Mansion’s comic book series, his appearance and narrative were both stricken from the manor when the writers changed the story. He would have been better in Pirates of the Caribbean anyway.

4 The Jabberwock (Alice in Wonderland)

If they’re not familiar with the book, anyone who has seen Disney’s Alice in Wonderland is familiar with “Twas Brillig.” This little ditty sung by the wily Cheshire Cat actually is what replaced a gigantic dragon-like character inspired by the poem of the same name.

Originally, Alice would have encountered the creature after meeting up with the Tweedles in the forest. He was even given his own song but the character was eventually removed.

3 Humpty Dumpty (Alice in Wonderland)

The Jabberwock was only one of the characters cut from Wonderland, but there is one particular individual that should definitely have made it in. At one point, Humpty Dumpty from Through the Looking Glass would have been featured as one of the lead characters.

He made it into pencil tests and storyboards, and Disney supposedly had W.C. Fields reprise his role from the 1933 production in voice testing. The scene was lost because it was deemed “too whimsical,” as if that were possible in Wonderland.

2 Mick, Bowie, and Lemmy (Emporer’s New Groove)

Wouldn’t Yzma be cooler if she were a necromancer? When The Emporer’s New Groove was called Kingdom of the Sun, Yzma was aided by three mummified minions named Mick, Bowie, and Lemmy.

Before Kronk hit the scene, Yzma was given three rockstar-inspired alternatives to Shenzi, Banzai, and Ed. Not much is known other than their names and vocation, but they can be seen backing her up in a deleted song, “Snuff Out the Light.” One can’t help but wonder what kind of additions they would have made.

1 Arawn (The Black Cauldron)

The Black Cauldron is a loose adaptation of Lloyd Alexander’s Chronicles of Prydain, and many elements were either cut or combined to fit the film’s length.

One notable example was Arawn, who later became Disney’s version of The Horned King. Instead of making Arawn The Death Lord a major antagonist like the books, one can see that Disney fused both him and the Horned King. Arawn was, however, implied to be the evil spirit inhabiting the cauldron. A reach, but a compromise nonetheless.
