10 Disney Films That Inspired Animated Spin-Offs

Disney movies have been so successful that it’s no wonder many of them went on to become their own animated spin-off TV shows.

Disney+ is home to plenty of Disney’s best live-action and animated movies. However, it is sorely lacking in many of the TV shows that became spin-offs of many of these famous movies. Often, a successful film would be followed by a great animated show.

With Disney holding back on some of its archives though, there’s no telling if or when any of these shows will be released. Needless to say, this was a great lesson for the Disney storytelling process as they learned to adapt these massive Hollywood movies into weekly shows that many fans will likely have fond memories of.

10 Lilo And Stitch (2002)

Lilo and Stitch has been a surprise hit by all accounts and still has plenty of fans today. The lovable rogue monster and his human friend captured hearts with their message of family.

The early 2000s saw many animated movies also get series spin-offs and eventually a show based on experiment 626 and the many other monsters that Dr. Jumba had created, was born.

9 Tangled (2010)

The story of Rapunzel is re-told in Disney’s Tangled launching a brand new era in the studio’s animated movies. While the popular film never received a sequel, it did get a TV spin-off.

The show, which is available on Disney+, sees Rapunzel go on numerous adventures after the events of the original movie. Her journey helps her to adjust to her new life outside of the tower.

8 Lion King (1994)

The Lion King may have received its own live-action remake, but it also had a number of sequels and even some TV show exposure. Most notably and very recently, The Lion Guard was born.

The show is a modern take on life after the original film, with the children of Simba and Nala getting to know their world and understanding their position in the royal family; much like their father did once before.

7 The Emperor’s New Groove (2000)

The story of Emperor Kuzco getting dethroned and having to live amongst his people is certainly an underrated addition to the Disney archives. Despite this, is created a sequel and a television show.

Titled The Emperor’s New School the series sees the Emperor in his younger days as he tries to pass his classes so he can ascend to the throne. It carries very similar themes to that of the film, about acceptance and humility.

6 Aladdin (1992)

The genie, the magic carpet, fantastic songs, a strong cast; what’s not to like about Disney’s Aladdin which is easily one of the best animated films of the 90s, even despite the competition!

Naturally, success means that there has to be a way to expand the franchise and while sequels didn’t seem enough, an animated show that saw the titular hero go on many adventures from his new life in the palace, explored the film series further.

5 Big Hero 6 (2014)

Marvel Comics inspired this action-adventure film, which even included a cameo from the late and great Stan Lee himself. There was so much more to explore in this superhero world though.

A TV show was commissioned that continue to see Hiro and his friends progress in their vigilante careers, solving problems with both their powers and their scientific knowledge.

4 Tron: Legacy (2010)

Ironically, it was the sequel to the much loved, although poorly aged, Tron film that actually created the spin-off series rather than the original movie itself.

Tron: Uprising sees a number of young heroes stage a rebellion within the computer system, one that should drastically change the society of the Tron universe forever.

3 Hercules (1997)

With rumors of a live-action remake of Hercules continuing to circulate thanks to the popularity of the original film, it seems appropriate to revisit a crucial part of that franchise.

The TV show based on the film actually contradicts many elements of the big screen iteration and sees a young Hercules becoming a hero, fighting the forces of darkness that plague him.

2 Toy Story (1995)

The Toy Story franchise is not only one of PIXAR’s most profitable film series but also one of its best. A surprising fact is the character of Buzz Lightyear actually got his own TV show.

The subject of attention was Star Command, as the show saw Buzz’s many fictional adventures as if the character was actually part of some kind of space fleet tasked with protecting the galaxy.

1 Monsters Inc (2001)

Although it hasn’t been released yet, Disney+ is working on a TV show that will take fans back inside the world of Mike and Sully, which sees new monsters navigating the laugh floor for the first time, after its transformation from harnessing screams.

Monsters At Work is sure to be a hit thanks to the continued popularity of the original Monsters Inc film and is going to feature both new characters and perhaps a few familiar returning faces.
