Disney is no stranger to science fiction, and while some endeavors have proven successful, other titles were left criminally underrated.

With the acquisition of the greatest science fiction series ever put to the big screen, it can be easy to forget that Disney already had several underrated entries into the genre. With or without Star Wars, the studio knew how to reach beyond the stars.

While they might lack a few lightsabers, space stations, and droids, these films have more than their fair share of spaceships, aliens, and heroes with incredible powers to drive their story beyond the realms of reality. They might not take place in a galaxy far, far, away, but here are ten sci-fi flicks from Disney that definitely deserve a second chance.

10 Tron Legacy

The original Tron was a product of its time, but that was the beauty of it. Its sequel, while visually impressive and entertaining, suffered from trying to be too modern. Many fans consider it a Daft Punk music video with a Disney sized budget. That being said, the film is still undeniably Tron, and fans of the original film from the ’80s need to give it a chance.

9 The Thirteenth Year

It might seem strange putting a Disney Channel Original Movie on the list, but The Thirteenth Year is strange enough on its own. Still, it’s one of those flicks that deserves a second look. Becoming a teenager is a struggle for everyone, but when you replace the trials of puberty with a merman metamorphosis, things tend to get a bit weird.

That being said, it definitely makes for an interesting watch. It might not be for everyone, but it remains undeniably curious.

8 Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland is an acquired taste. The film is by no means bad, it just uses familiar tropes to a fault. It has engaging performances by the likes of George Clooney and Hugh Laurie, an interesting parallel future, and an intense, if not disneyfied, pre-apocalyptic scenario. The problem with the film is it simply came out at the wrong time, but with Disney+, it can be given new life by a new set of fans.

7 Race to Witch Mountain

To be frank, any of the Witch Mountain movies could make this list, but the 2009 reimagining starring Dwayne Johnson takes the spot for having a much more epic sense to it.

Although it’s a literal race against time protecting alien lifeforms from government agents (a la E.T.), it does throw a few curveballs in the form of super-powered kids and an alien bounty hunter into the mix. Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it.

6 My Favorite Martian

One of Disney’s favorite things to do in the ’90s was to give old TV shows live-action movies. In this film version of the TV show of the same name, Jeff Daniels gets a new roommate in the form of Christopher Lloyd’s Martian visitor. Whether fans have seen the original show or not, the film is an underrated comedic gem. Plus, Christopher Lloyd as an alien, what’s not to like?

5 The Cat From Outer Space

This film isn’t exactly what one would call deep, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a good time. When Jake, an extraterrestrial in the form of a housecat, crashlands on earth.

Similar to the previously discussed film, he meets an earthling, exposes him to his alien abilities, and hilarity ensues. Think of this flick as Disney’s answer to the B-movie. It’s weird, it’s funny, and it deserves to be rewatched like a midnight movie.

4 John Carter

This film got absolutely trashed when it first premiered but is it really as bad as critics say it is? True, it’s not exactly Star Wars, but it is a unique blend of sci-fi and fantasy that almost has a weird cult-film status. Is it groundbreaking and mindblowing? No. But it’s a good slice of standard sci-fi adventure that really deserves a second chance at a fan base. At least it had some pretty good effects.

3 The Rocketeer

While it already has a DisneyJunior series and a sequel on the way, it would be insulting if this film didn’t have a place on the list. For the longest time, The Rocketeer was one of Disney’s most under-watched treasures.

It’s like if Iron-Man met Indiana Jones, with secret government technology, a Nazi threat, and high-flying adventure, could there be any more reason to see this Disney gem?

2 Flubber

Although the original Absentminded Professor deserves recognition, it’s this Robin Williams remake that takes the cake. One of the most underrated performances in the comedian’s career, this movie lends itself to as much physical comedy as it does sci-fi shenanigans. It’s got explosions, a house full of robots, and… The Flubber Mambo. Certainly a more than enjoyable watch.

1 The Black Hole

It’s better to just watch this movie than try to summarize it. It takes a lot from other science fiction films of the era, but it still has several original concepts that deserve to be explored. It’s easy to see where it gets some of its inspiration, but there’s definitely something to be said for this critically under-watched adventure. With lost space stations, robots, and even zombies, it’s got a lot going on that practically begs to be seen.
