DC Comics has a notoriously convoluted timeline. The many Earths and alternate versions of characters, known as the DC Multiverse, got so messy and hard to understand that the publisher produced the now-iconic Crisis on Infinite Earths event to simplify things under one single, unified DC Universe.
Like the Crisis, several critical events in DC’s history shaped its universe as a whole. They can be massive crossovers involving numerous heroes or more contained situations featuring only a couple of speedsters. Either way, these happenings are crucial for any to understand DC’s unstable continuity, and they remain some of the most notable events in comic book history.
10 Zombies Invade In Blackest Night
The Green Lanterns Corps are some of the mightiest forces in the DC Universe, but it sometimes feels like they don’t get the respect they deserve. However, storylines like Blackest Night put them front and center, accurately portraying their influence within the DC Universe. A payoff to the preceding event the Sinestro Corps War, Blackest Night introduces a rainbow of Green Lanterns, expanding the group’s reach and increasing their prominence.
By having Nekron as an antagonist, Blackest Night explores themes of destiny, legacy, life, and death while still having fun with zombie superheroes. The event brought back some prominent characters like Hawkman and Hawkgirl, Aquaman, and the Martian Manhunter, setting the stage for Brightest Day, one of the best Green Lantern storylines from the 2010s.

Batman’s distrust of everyone has long been a point of tension for the Justice League. However, the Dark Knight’s paranoia seemed justified during the Identity Crisis storyline. As his worse fears are realized by his teammate’s betrayal, Batman builds Brother Eye, a satellite monitoring meta-human activity that would become central to the Infinite Crisis.
8 Krypton’s Explosion
Most depictions of Krypton portray it as a highly advanced civilization on the verge of collapse. The planet perishes in an explosion, with seemingly only one survivor left: Kal-El, the Last Son of Krypton. Sent into Earth by his parents, baby Kal reaches the planet and grows up with the Kents, ultimately becoming Earth’s savior and the greatest superhero of all time.
Krypton’s demise is crucial to the DC timeline. It’s the reason why Superman first came to Earth, kickstarting the Golden Age of superheroes. Had Krypton never exploded, perhaps the entire DC Universe wouldn’t exist as it does.
7 Hal Jordan’s Return
Hal Jordan is one of the best characters from the Silver Age of comics. Despite being the second Green Lantern, he remains the definitive version of the character. His downfall and transformation into Parallax during the Emerald Twilight storyline was met with huge controversy and remained one of DC’s most divisive decisions for years.
Jordan’s return during Green Lantern: Rebirth was a landmark event for the entire universe. Facing Parallax once again, Jordan overcomes fear itself. The storyline also significantly expands the Green Lantern mythos by introducing the emotional spectrum and bringing back Sinestro and the Guardians of the Universe.
6 The Death Of Superman
For years, the consensus was that Superman was invincible. He was the Man of Steel, after all. However, the classic but controversial Death of Superman storyline challenged these perceptions by bringing Superman to his knees against a threat that not even he could defeat without sacrificing himself in the process. Superman’s death at Doomsday’s hands remains a divisive topic among critics and fans. Some applaud DC’s boldness, and others dismiss it as a mere publicity stunt.
The fact remains that Superman’s death put the DC Universe in a state of emergency. Every hero and even a few villains attend his funeral, and even Bill and Hillary Clinton make cameos. 5 Flash Of Two Worlds
It isn’t easy to put into words how influential Flash of Two Worlds is, not only for DC but for the entire comic book industry. The storyline features the Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen, traveling to an alternate dimension where he meets the Golden Age Flash, Jay Garrick. The two team up to defeat a group of villains, and Barry returns to his dimension after convincing Jay to come out of retirement and become the Flash once more.
By introducing the concept of parallel Earths, Flash of Two Worlds paved the way for the Multiverse. It kickstarted a trend that would last for the next sixty years, shaking the entire foundation of DC Comics. And to think it all started because Barry Allen ran too fast while entertaining a group of children.
4 Final Crisis
By this point, DC has had so many crises that it should stage at intervention. Final Crisis features DC’s eternal antagonist, Darkseid, attempting to overthrow reality. However, in a shocking twist, his death during the New Gods’ final battle created a singularity at the heart of creation itself, which is slowly consuming all of time and space. The events result in Batman’s apparent death and the corruption of many other DC heroes.
Final Crisis contains a plethora of wild storylines that border on the nonsensical. At one point, Superman summons an army of Supermen from across time and space, including one modeled after Barack Obama. The storyline culminated with Darkseid’s apparent demise, bringing an end to the villain’s infamous reign. Batman gets sent back in time, one of the most bizarre editorial choices in any DC property.
3 Flashpoint
Barry Allen has nearly become a punchline. Fans immediately blame him whenever something happens within the DC timeline, even if he’s not guilty. Flashpoint is one of his most famous time-traveling shenanigans. The storyline features Barry in a timeline where Cyborg is the world’s greatest hero, Thomas Wayne is Batman, Superman is a prisoner of the US government, and Wonder Woman and Aquaman are in the middle of a war.
DC used Flashpoint as a way to launch its new and ambitious project, The New 52. The company’s reach ended up exceeding its grasp, and The New 52 eventually fizzled away. However, Flashpoint remains a crucial event in DC comics history, ending nearly thirty years of continuity. Flashpoint might end up altering the DCEU as well, confirming that, in terms of importance, few other storylines have more weight within the DC universe.
2 Doomsday Clock

The basic storyline follows the Anti-Monitor, an interdimensional being who controls the Antimatter Universe. His attack upon the Multiverse results in the deaths of icons like Supergirl and Barry Allen and the creation of a single unified Earth.
Crisis on Infinite Earths is not only one of the most ambitious and dramatic events in comic book history but a whole revolution to DC’s continuity. The Crisis would be the first of many universal events that would shake DC comics in years to come, but nothing will ever match the sheer impact of seeing Superman holding Supergirl’s dead body and mourning.
