Animal characters are a huge part of DC and Marvel comics – enemies, aliens, pets, or sidekicks – and some of them have made it into live action.

The comic book world is a diverse place full of strange and mystical creatures. For every Devil Dinosaur, though, there’s also a Pizza Dog. Over the years, the animals of the DC and Marvel Universe have slowly been adapted to screen, as these heroic best friends contribute to the fight against evil in their own unique way.
Of course, some of these animals actually serve in the villainous roles themselves; needless to say that whatever their allegiance, these pets can often be quite difficult to adapt to screen. However, major studios have demonstrated they have what it takes to bring these incredible animals from the page to the TV or cinema.
10 Ace The Bat-Hound
As the Batman universe continues to expand thanks to Warner Brothers’ version of the Multiverse, there may be further opportunities to see different iterations of Ace the Bat-Hound on the big screen. For now, though, fans are satisfied with his small cameo in Crisis On Infinite Earths.
As the Arrowverse’s Multiverse began to collapse, fans were shocked to see the original Boy Wonder, Burt Ward return to the screen. With this version of Robin came Ace the Bat-Hound, one of the few times that the famous dog has been seen in live-action.
9 Goose
In the comics, Captain Marvel comes to own a cat that she calls Chewie, after the famous Wookie from one of her favorite movies. The MCU version of the cat gets a slightly different name to reflect Carol Danver’s time in the air force.
Called Goose after the character in Top Gun, just like in the source material, this friendly feline isn’t quite what she appears to be. As the Skrull Talos comes to recognize, Goose is actually an alien creature known as a Flerken!
8 Krypto The Super Dog
Krypto the Super Dog is one of the most famous comic book animals of all time. In fact, this Kryptonian canine has even had his own solo adventures on screen, thanks to an animated series based on the titular character.
As fans look to the third season of HBO Max’s Titans and all the new characters they could possibly be introduced to, they are reminded of the huge reveal from season 2 that Superboy and Krypto had joined the show; with an extremely faithful adaptation put to screen.
7 Rocket Raccoon
Rocket has confused countless characters after he frustratingly denies being of raccoon origin. Whether he is some kind of alien variant on the species, or just a normal Earth animal that has been endlessly experimented on, no one knew what to expect when it was announced Rocket would be brought to screen.
A character like this had never been seen in cinema before, but James Gunn believed he had what it takes to fully realize the character in live-action. Thanks to his hilarious quotes and charming relationship with Groot, Rocket has now become an absolute fan favorite in the MCU.
6 Cosmo The Dog
Guardians Of The Galaxy was pretty groundbreaking with how far it went into comic book lore. The creative team behind the blockbuster production continued to pull out the stops with a number of other cosmic animals from Marvel history.
The addition of Cosmo the Space Dog was a surprising yet welcome one. The canine companion is a Russian dog from the country’s space program, who had been left out in deep space. He eventually ends up in the Collector’s private museum of living curiosities.
5 Howard The Duck
The hits just kept on coming for James Gunn’s take on the galactic team. The post-credits sequence of that initial Guardians Of The Galaxy movie created one more long-lasting surprise for those who had been patient enough to wait for it.
After the previous and surprisingly adult attempt to bring Howard the Duck to screen in live-action was a complete failure, it was actually quite shocking to see Howard the Duck return in a newly CGI created form, in the MCU movie.
4 Old Lace
Old Lace is a slightly lesser-known creature from the Marvel Universe but she is the loyal pet of Runaway member Gertrude Yorkes, or Gert to her friends. Her parents created this beast to protect their daughter; although they are more than just a pet and owner.
The two are actually psychically linked, meaning Gert can have full control over this prehistoric predator. This also means that the pair can feel the same things, which can become very dangerous in the middle of battle. This is one of the elements of the comics which the live-action adaption did not change.
3 Sparky
Sparky has only recently appeared on screen, in the new Disney+ show WandaVision. In the comics Sparky is the pet of Vision’s family and as such looks like an android dog rather than anything resembling something from the real world.
In the MCU show, Sparky appears in a single episode as a regular dog and then dies by the conclusion of the story. There’s plenty of speculation that the Scarlet Witch might revive the beloved pet, to resemble something from the comic arc.
2 Lockjaw
The teleporting dog of the Inhumans, known as Lockjaw, looked pretty spectacular on-screen considering the budget of the show. However, he was used sparingly throughout, likely due to the cost of creating the canine on TV.
1 Gorilla Grodd
Gorilla Grodd is one of the most dangerous villains that the Scarlet Speedster has ever had to combat against. CW’s The Flash actually introduced this beast early into the show and created quite a faithful adaptation of the DC foe.
From his mind-bending powers to his great strength, the TV series has done a masterful job at demonstrating why Grodd has earned the reputation he holds. What’s more, the show didn’t even shy away from venturing to Gorilla City, a well-known location in the comics.
