The Bill & Ted series has been dormant for almost three decades, but is about to be revived in the form of Bill & Ted Face the Music. The series is noted for bringing elements of time travel, kooky comedy, and a buddy theme that ties everything together.

To this end, it’s worth checking out other films that bring similar kinds of entertainment. While not all of these have a theme of time travel, they do reflect other features that make them stand out in their own right. 10 Men In Black 3 (2012)

When his partner is erased from existence, Agent J must travel to the past and team up with a younger Agent K to stop a massive change in history from occurring. Along the way, he digs up things about Agent K he’d never known during their partnership.

The Men in Black series never takes itself seriously, yet the third installment manages to be even more hilariously aloof. Filled with nostalgic references and a quirky time travel theme to boot, the film is an action packed romp that delivers in the thrills and the laughs.

9 Idiocracy (2006)

A soldier placed in cryogenic suspension wakes up much later than anticipated, five hundred years in the future. Things turn out to be worse than anticipated, as he realizes that society has become extremely dumb, essentially making him the smartest person in the world.

Idiocracy brings quality from all fronts, as it presents social commentary along with comedy in the form of dumb but likable supporting characters. It’s also much different than most other offerings in this genre, and has aged remarkably well due to many themes becoming more relevant over the years.

8 Around The World In 80 Days (2004)

Phileas Fogg agrees on a wager to circle the globe in eighty days. Helping him along the way is his assistant, Passeporout, who has hidden plans of his own. Together, the two undergo daring adventures the world has never seen before.

In one of Jackie Chan’s more entertaining efforts, Around the World in 80 Days is one of those films where the entertainment value makes up for the over-the-top craziness that unfolds. There’s charming chemistry to be found among the many kooky characters in this highly comedic feature.

7 Galaxy Quest (1999)

Stereotyped actors begrudgingly attend a convention for their once-successful science fiction series, Galaxy Quest. However, upon being abducted by actual aliens, they are left with no choice but to stop an intergalactic conflict.

It’s not easy blending jokes within a science fiction setting. Yet, Galaxy Quest does it masterfully well. While it’s something of a spoof film, there’s still a lot of heart to be found here. The abundance of funny moments make this one of the best films to watch in multiple viewings.

6 Groundhog Day (1993)

Phil Connors, a selfish man solely focused on personal gain, is forced to live through the same day. After his initial self-serving attempts fail, a resigned Phil realizes he must improve upon himself in order to break free of this loop.

It’s not strictly time travel, although Groundhog Day is intriguing enough to be something of its own thing. There’s as much to learn here as there is to be amused by, and the film represents the best kind of storytelling when it comes to creativity in this genre.

5 Pleasantville (1998)

A pair of twins find themselves trapped in a TV series set in the 1950s. While they find it difficult to integrate themselves at first, the two realize their inclusion has begun to bring color to the dreary lives of the characters.

A light feature that also accomplishes in being heartwarming, Pleasantville is a thinking man’s comedy film. There’s enough craziness going on to satisfy Bill & Ted fans, and viewers will appreciate how this movie embraces quirkiness with a focus on an emotional story.

4 Epic Movie (2007)

Four “teenagers” attempt to escape from an evil factory owner, and find themselves in a magical world. While there, they learn they are meant to take down the evil witch of the lands and become the new kings and queens.

It’s a completely ridiculous spoof film, but Epic Movie is the kind of “excellent” ridiculousness that Bill & Ted fans won’t mind indulging in. By switching off any need for a coherent plot, viewers can have a blast laughing at the insane antics of the many parody characters.

3 Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Four friends look to forget about their troubles at a resort. However, their hopes of relaxing in a hot tub are cut short when it ends up transporting them back to the past into their youths. Given a second chance at life, the guys do whatever they can to fix their troubles.

Easily one of the more underrated comedy films, Hot Tub Time Machine is silly fun that benefits from it’s talented cast. It can be crude in places, but even those moments will most likely bring out belly laughs to remember. Not to mention the interesting take on the time travel theme to be found here.

2 Dude, Where’s My Car? (2000)

After a night of partying and recklessness, two dimwitted best friends must retrace their steps to find their car. What they don’t count on is becoming a target for everyone, from the police to aliens, as they try to piece together what it was that made them the most wanted.

Like Bill and Ted, the protagonists of this movie are a pair of morons whose extreme naivete and laziness brings a certain level of charm. It’s a film designed exclusively to make one laugh, and it’s hard to argue against it since the goofiness does accomplish in bringing out the funny aspect.

1 Back To The Future Part II (1989)

Marty McFly finds himself in 2015, having traveled thirty years in the future. Unfortunately, his actions end up affecting the past, as Marty realizes that 1985 has changed as well. In order to undo his mistake, he and Doc Brown journey further back to 1955 to make things right.

The second installment in the series has aged remarkably well thanks to the added focus on the time travelling aspect. The movie takes great liberties in portraying a view of the future, and there’s a real thrill in witnessing Marty and Doc Brown face the consequences of time. Of course, there’s a lot of laughs and good times available, thanks to the over-the-top portrayal of the future.
