Friends is one of the longest-running and most successful American sitcoms of all time. Centering around a friend group of twenty-somethings who lean on each other and become literal and figurative family, Friends had no shortage of hilarious conflict over its historic ten-year run.
From breakups to new jobs and everything in between, every episode of Friends was full of jokes sure to bring audiences to laughs. With such a historic run, it’s no surprise that Friends ended with a handful of iconic and hilarious running gags that were used again and again.
10 Fist Banging Aka “Friendly Finger”
While Friends was full of dialogue-based jokes, the series also made a name for itself in the physical comedy realm thanks to the talented cast. One of the best physical comedy gags came to be in season 4 and consisted of the characters banging their fists together.
Because of Standards and Practices, the characters on Friends couldn’t give each other the middle fingers so they got creative instead. Ross is the first person to use the gesture, directed towards Rachel after she has insulted him.
9 Gunther’s Love For Rachel
It’s not just the main characters on Friends who had running jokes, but also the talented supporting cast like Central Perk’s barista Gunther. From the pilot, it’s clear that Gunther is infatuated with Rachel, even when she runs in with a wedding dress. However, his infatuation is often lost on Rachel and the other friends.
As the show progresses, Gunther is regularly seen and heard making comments about and to Rachel without her ever getting the hint. It isn’t until the epic series finale that Gunther finally admits his feelings towards Rachel.
8 Janice’s Presence
Janice might be one of the best supporting comedic relief characters in all of television history and as such, she comes with her very own group of running gags. From her voice to her constantly shouting “Oh My God” there is no shortage. However, one of the best running gags is simply Janice’s random presence in the friends’ lives.
After breaking up with Chandler for the third and final time, Janice makes an appearance at least once in every season. She ends up in the delivery room next to Rachel and almost becomes Chandler and Monica’s neighbor in the final season.
7 Joey’s Wide-Eyes Face
Joey might not be the smartest character in Friends but that’s what makes him such an iconic character. Joey has tons of running gags on the show from catchphrases to his aversion to underwear, but a fan favorite remains Joey’s wide-eyed face when he’s figuring something out.
It’s a gag inside of a gag since it’s usually paired with Joey’s slower processing time when it comes to discovering things. Joey makes the face several times throughout the series, including when he finds about Chandler and Monica and when he discovers that they’ve had twins.
6 No One Knowing Chandler’s Job
Unlike the other friends whose jobs are an intrinsic part of their personalities, Chandler’s job is just another job. His lack of talking about it is probably why his friends have no idea what he does for a living – a hilarious and widely used running gag on the show.
The best example of this is when Monica and Rachel are playing a quiz game with Chandler and Joey over who gets the big apartment and neither of them can answer the bonus question of what Chandler does for a living.
5 Rachel Returning Gifts
There’s no doubt that a key trait of Rachel Green is her materialistic tendencies. Once a spoiled rich girl, always a spoiled rich girl which is why she continues to favor the finer things in life even when she has to work for them.
Given her fashionista personality, Rachel knows what she likes which is why a huge running gag for her characters is her constantly returning gifts she receives. Her terrible habit forces her friends to get creative like when Chandler gifts her a donation to the New York opera so she couldn’t exchange it.
4 Regina Phalange
Like all the friends, Phoebe had a fair share of hilarious running gags over the show’s ten-season run. However, a fan favorite and most versatile running gag is her alter-ego Regina Phalange.
Regina Phalange has taken many forms and gotten her into many sticky Friends situations, from being Ross’s brain doctor to a businesswoman who hopes to win over Joey’s secret hand twin, there are no professionals left unturned. Her alter-ego even helps get Rachel off the plane to Paris when she claims the plane is having problems with the “left Phalange.”
3 Ross Being The Favorite Child
Ross and Monica have one of the most authentic sibling relationships ever portrayed on television. One moment they’re friends and the next moment they want to kill each other. The latter is especially the case whenever Monica realizes that Ross is the favorite child amongst her parents.
This gag regularly stems from their mother Judy, who has gone as far as telling Rachel that she’s the daughter she never had. one of the most hilarious examples of this though is when the Geller’s garage floods and their father uses Monica’s boxes to protect his car.
2 Ross’s Divorces
A key trait of Ross is his tendency to fall in love fast and move too quickly which ultimately ends in disaster. While his first divorce wasn’t his fault, the subsequent ones absolutely were which is why his divorces have become an iconic running gag.
Ross is so self-conscious about his divorce rate that he even refuses to divorce Rachel after they accidentally get married in Vegas after a wild night out. Luckily Ross was a good sport with the teasing and even joined the friends in later seasons by poking fun at his own divorce history.
1 Ugly Naked Guy
While there are several running gags on Friends that lasted the entire 10 seasons there were some early ones that unfortunately drifted away as the show progressed. One of those hilarious and forgotten running gags was the presence of “ugly naked guy.”
“Ugly Naked Guy” plays a major role in the early seasons as he’s a nudist who lives across the street from Monica and Rachel’s apartment. The friends are regularly seen watching him and even create a long pole to poke him to make sure he’s still alive.
