The series centers on the wealthy Rose family who finds themselves broke and forced to relocate to the only asset they’re allowed to retain: a small town in the middle of nowhere called Schitt’s Creek. As the youngest Rose family member, Alexis is definitely the wild child of the family. She’s also become one of the characters with the most running gags. However, a fan favorite has to be her random and oftentimes dangerous stories from her time as a wealthy socialite.

From escaping a Thai drug lord’s car truck to being held hostage by Somali pirates, Alexis’s past definitely seems like an adventure straight out of a Lifetime movie. The best part about these stories is that she brings them up so casually, which gets her the best reactions from her family and friends.

Costuming and makeup aren’t always considered a running gag, but on Schitt’s Creek one piece of the wardrobe/makeup department is definitely just that, and it’s Moira Rose’s many wigs.

In fact, his poor gift-giving habits are responsible for them owning the town of Schitt’s Creek in the first place. Sometimes her accent is subtle and other times it’s full-on, in your face like how she pronounces “baby” as “bebe.” There is no telling what word Moira will add her Moira flare to, which makes it all the more hilarious when it happens. Plus, she’s the only one in the family with this random accent, which is also downright hilarious.

While much of Schitt’s Creek revolves around the Rose family, there are also a handful of amazing and hilarious reoccurring characters that round out the cast. One of these hilarious characters is Twyla, a waitress at the only restaurant in town, Cafe Tropical.

Twyla has a handful of running gags of her own but her signature smoothies are one that is established in the very first season of the show. Twyla’s smoothies are her pride and joy and the ingredients and names change based on her mood. As if that’s not hilarious enough, watching the townspeople’s reaction to drinking them will definitely make anyone laugh out loud.

4 Name Dropping Celebrities

As once wealthy and connected socialities, especially in the entertainment world due to Moria’s soap opera stardom, the Roses have had several interactions with famous celebrities fans know and love.

Usually, the name dropping stems from Alexis and David but Moira and Johnny get in on the hilarious gag from time to time, and Moira, especially likes to use her “status” and acting chops to get her own way. Name drops have included Hillary Clinton, Elton John, and even the Hanson brothers, who Alexis apparently dated at the same time.

3 The Fruit Winery & Moira’s Disgust In It

One of the more obscure running gags on Schitt’s Creek revolves around the local fruit winery. The winery, which specializes in fruit wines, is first introduced in season one when Moira is approached to do a commercial for them. It all turns into a hilarious comical bit, as Moira gets drunk on the disgusting wine.

While the winery could have been one and done, it resurfaces in later seasons in a full circle moment when Moira is approached to create her own fruit wine. Not only is the venue hilarious, but watching Moira try to hide her disgust in the wines is funny enough to bring anyone to tears.

2 “Ew, David” & Other Insults

Every iconic comedy series has at least one character who has an iconic catchphrase, and for Schitt’s Creek, that character happens to be Alexis. While David shows his disgust through his face, Alexis calls out her disgust, usually towards David, by shouting “Ew David” frequently throughout the show.

The best part is that “Ew David” transforms into various sayings, all of which include Alexis shouting David’s name. Sometimes it manifests as “Oh my god, David,” and other times it’s just her shouting his name in an exasperated and disgusted manner.

Twyla’s smoothies aren’t the only thing hilarious about her character. In fact, like Alexis, Twyla regularly breaks out into seemingly random and wild stories about her family.

Things start off regularly in the first episode when Twyla announces that her cousin ended up learning Spanish in jail after landing there for running an illegal telemarketing gig. But things only get weirder from there until Twyla is confessing that her uncle had a parrot who asked her to take her bra off.
