Moviegoers are used to seeing favorite films remade with new casts, but familiar stories would take on a whole new twist if they swapped gender roles.

10 GenderSwapped Roles We Want To See

In the past few years, it seems that more and more reboots, remakes, and revivals have been happening. These give fans of past shows and films, as well as a new generation, the chance to fall in love with stories again or for the first time.

Several of these retellings have even swapped the genders of the main characters, such as the all-women casts seen in Ghostbusters (from 2016) and Ocean’s 8 (from 2018) and the flip-flopped couple in Overboard (which also came out in 2018). That being said, here are ten other gender-swapped roles we would like to see.

10 The Lost Boys

In 1987, actors like Corey Haim, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Feldman, Dianne Wiest and Edward Herrmann starred in The Lost Boys, which focused on a group of vampires. At one point, a sequel called The Lost Girls was mentioned, and recently, there was talk of a TV show version that would feature the Frog Sisters instead of the Frog Brothers.

While we wait to see if either of those come to be, we can keep hoping that a new story about female vampires happens. People seem to really enjoy tales full of fantastical creatures, and if these leading ladies rocked fashion from the ‘80s, like in the original, we wouldn’t be mad.

9 10 Things I Hate About You

A super popular rom-com, 10 Things I Hate About You, came out in 1999. It featured Julia Stiles as a high school girl, Kat, who was very particular and studious and the late and great Heath Ledger as the bad at school. Of course, she ended up falling for him, though, and professing her feelings through a memorable poem.

What if the straight-shooting and smart boy fell for the edgy girl? What if he was the one to stand up and share all of his feelings with the class? What if she softened a bit, as she realized she could like someone like him?

8 The Social Network

Obviously, Facebook was founded by a man, and Jesse Eisenberg played that man, Mark Zuckerberg, in The Social Network from 2010. Several other males were featured, as well, such as Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer and Max Minghella.

Everyone is on social media, and this film did really well, as it gave an intriguing behind-the-scenes look at a popular social media platform. Therefore, we would love to see something as exciting and successful that told the backstory of a female-led brand.

7 Twilight

10 GenderSwapped Roles We Want To See

The Twilight Saga film series began in 2008, and this fantasy story starred Kristen Stewart as a teen girl named Bella Swan and Robert Pattinson as a vampire named Edward Cullen. The books and the movies both had huge followings, due to the action and the romance!

Imagine if the roles were reversed, though… Once again, we would have a female vampire, and we would have a normal, high school-aged boy. The two would fall in love, and the leading lady would have to protect her man. The male’s mother would be unsure about it all, but in the end, their relationship would beat the odds and survive.

6 Psycho

Alfred Hitchcock, the creepy motel, the big house, the shower scene… Everything about Psycho is iconic, making it a true horror classic. Released in 1960, it starred Anthony Perkins as Norman Bates and Janet Leigh as Marion Crane. There was even a popular prequel television series, Bates Motel, with Freddie Highmore as the main character.

When it comes to gender-swapped roles, however, this is another story to consider redoing. Women can easily play scary villains, and it would be interesting to see a father in the rocking chair reveal at the end, rather than a mother.

5 Casablanca

Casablanca combined war drama and a love story when it was released in 1942, and Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman are well-known for their starring parts in this film. In fact, it is considered to be one of the greatest pieces of cinema out there.

But, of course, it would be interesting to see a remake. The original is a classic, but this would allow a whole new generation of people to watch, enjoy and love it all. And in it, the main parts could be switched, which would definitely be something to see.

4 The Lion King

A good amount of Disney movies are about princesses, but there are so many other great ones with male leads, such as The Lion King from 1994, as well as its realistic-looking remake last year. This story is about Simba being the next in line to become King of the Pride Lands.

We want a queen! We want a female heir! We want a mother showing her daughter that everything the light touches will be hers at some point! And we want women to voice new versions of Rafiki, Zazu, Timon and Pumbaa, of course.

3 The Expendables

10 GenderSwapped Roles We Want To See

The Expendables is an action franchise featuring tough guys like Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Randy Couture, Terry Crews, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Chuck Norris, Liam Hemsworth, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger. At one point, rumors came out that a female version called The ExpendaBelles was happening and that it may even include actresses like Meryl Streep, Cameron Diaz and Milla Jovovich.

While we sit and wait and wonder, we think about all the numerous strong and striking and bold and beautiful women who could star in all the different movies and sequels and prequels.

2 Easy A

In 2010, Easy A came out, featuring names like Emma Stone, Penn Badgley, Stanley Tucci, Patricia Clarkson, Thomas Haden Church, Amanda Bynes, Aly Michalka, Dan Byrd, Cam Gigandet and Lisa Kudrow. Inspired by The Scarlet Letter, it centered around a high school-aged young woman and rumors about her… extracurricular activities.

Picture this story with a male lead. Don’t picture the stereotypical cool guy on campus who has a way with the ladies and is so popular for it. Instead, picture a young man who is gossiped about, who wants love, who is open to new things and who is just trying to navigate life. It could be something good.

1 Some Like It Hot

In 1959, Some Like It Hot was released. It starred Tony Curtis, and Jack Lemmon as musicians who dressed like women, as they ran away from gangsters, joined an all-girls band and both developed a crush on a woman played by Marilyn Monroe.

In 2020, an updated version could star two actresses as musicians who dress like men, as they run away from danger, join an all-boys band and both develop a crush on a man played by a true legend. It may not turn into the classic that Monroe was in, but it sounds like an entertaining idea, for sure.
