10 Ghibli Animated Creatures That Are Too Cute To Take Seriously

Studio Ghibli is known for their unique animation films. They’ve included many creatures in them who are almost too adorable for words.

Studio Ghibli’s animated characters come in so many shapes, sizes, and levels of cuteness. When movie fans think of Studio Ghibli productions, there is always the anticipation of checking out what new and strange creatures have been created. Some animated creations are too frightening to look at such as Demon Nago, some resemble actual living animals like Moro the wolf Goddess, and others absolutely melt hearts with their adorable appearances such as Chibi Totoro.

Some are actually way too cute to take seriously. Regardless of appearances, the storylines offer deeper meanings and importance to characters, but these cute creatures are just too darling to take seriously.

10 Totoro: My Neighbor Totoro

One of the most widely-known animations from Studio Ghibli is My Neighbor Totoro. In the movie, Mei is the little girl who finds the “creature.” The audience never really knows what the creature is but Mei calls him Totoro which means troll.

Troll legends are usually about scary and repulsive creatures with a bad attitude but in this animation, the “troll” is a huge and cuddly cat-bear creature. Totoro is a character who proves that looks can be deceiving. He may be huge and intimidating to a small child at first but he is actually the cutest massive fluff-ball in Ghibli animation.

9 Calcifer: Howl’s Moving Castle

In the movie Howl’s Moving Castle, there is a speaking fire demon who makes many demands but is never really a threatening or dangerous character. On the contrary, his fiery personality leads to him becoming friends with Sophie who doesn’t put up with his constant nagging.

Originally a falling star plummeting to its demise, Calcifer was saved by Howl and entered into a contract with him. He isn’t exactly what anyone would expect from a demon and his nagging and feisty attitude gets kind of sweet after a while.

8 Sootballs: Spirited Away

The tiny sootballs called susuwatari can be seen in the movie Spirited Away working for Kamaji the boilerman. They are under a spell to work by carrying coal to the burners and they charmingly eat star candies for lunch. They are also seen in My Neighbor Totoro in the attic hiding and escaping from Mei.

These little soot sprites are just so cute and fluffy-looking even though they are actually dust balls, something that nobody wants in their home. Studio Ghibli took this concept and made charming little creatures that interact with the characters and are memorable throughout the two films.

7 Baron Humbert Von Gikkingen: Whisper Of The Heart

The animate character Baron Humbert Von Gikkingen is actually a statue of a cat with human traits who wears a suit, a top hat, and shoes. He is in two Ghibli movies titled, Whisper of the Heart and The Cat Returns. He has a rather large role in both movies.

The Baron is on a mission of love and he must help the main character Haru find herself and her self-confidence. It’s a great story but still, a cute cat in a fancy suit and top hat playing a serious role can be a little silly.

6 The Kodama: Princess Mononoke

The Kodama are forest spirits that are seen when the forest is healthy. In the movie Princess Mononoke, these creatures appear a few times cranking their necks in a strange vibrating motion and fading in and out of sight.

It can be a bit creepy for movie viewers the first time one sees them but to be honest these little spirits are too cute to take seriously. They don’t talk at all; they just stare at other characters and their heads oddly resemble alien skulls on little ghost bodies.

5 Ōtori-Sama: Spirited Away

There is no argument that these creatures are absolutely some of the cutest seen in animation. The Ōtori-Sama are giant duck-like or chick-like creatures that visit the bathhouse in the movie Spirited Away.

They have a very small scene in the film but they are very memorable and their cute appearance makes them loved minor characters. For fans of all Studio Ghibli animations, Ōtori-Sama can be spotted in other movies such as at the senior center in the movie Ponyo and in the short Ghibli film Iblard Time.

4 Teto: Nausicaä Of The Valley Of The Wind

This Pokémon-looking fur ball is one of the many cute creatures created by Studio Ghibli and seen in the animation Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind. A gift from Nausicaä’s mentor, Lord Yupa, Teto was originally a wild and aggressive creature but very quickly grew close to Nausicaä and became her loyal pet.

He is introduced in the film as an untamed mini beast but his adorable appearance and his immediate liking of Nausicaä after biting her finger makes Teto a much-loved character.

3 Jiji: Kiki’s Delivery Service

The animation Kiki’s Delivery Service is about a teenager named Kiki who must complete a tradition for witches in training by traveling to a seaside town to spend a year alone. She takes her talking cat, Jiji, along with her. The personality of Jiji differs majorly in the Japanese version compared to the American English version.

Jiji is a sarcastic, talkative, and cynical cat in the English version which makes him a comedic character in the film. In the Japanese version, he is humble, cautions, and always ready to help, which is a huge contrast. No matter which of the two renditions fans have seen, Jiji is a charmer and one of the cutest cat characters in Studio Ghibli animations.

2 Baby Boh: Spirited Away

Remember Yubaba’s baby Boh? He was a spoiled giant infant who tried to terrorize Chihiro into playing with him. He is not exactly considered a good character in the film because of his selfish and demanding personality, but when Yubaba’s twin sister turns him into a small chubby mouse, he is just too cute to take seriously.

After his long adventure with Chihiro, he learns valuable life lessons and becomes more independent and caring for others. This makes him a loved character by the end of Spirited Away.

1 Niya: The Secret World Of Arrietty

The small-people animated film The Secret World of Arrietty follows a tiny teenager and her struggles to make her family proud and keep them safe while exploring the world around her and learning to be independent. The enemies in this story are the humans who might destroy their home and the fat cat outside named, Niya.

To a tiny person, Niya is the ultimate giant villain with massive sharp fangs and quick hunting prowess. Later in the story, Niya turns out to be your typical curious and friendly house cat. She is not so scary after all but just a cute furry feline.
