One of the most popular thrillers of the last 10 years has been David Fincher’s Gone Girl. Based on Gillian Flynn’s best-selling novel which she adapted herself, the movie stars Ben Affleck as a man whose wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) goes missing. As he becomes a prime suspect in the eyes of the police and a villain in the eyes of the public, he discovers there is more to her disappearance than there seems.

The movie is a tense, clever, and wild story with plenty of twists and turns. There is also some wonderful dialogue that helps tell the mystery, get inside the heads of these complex characters, and provide some dark comedy.

10 When I Think Of My Wife…

The film opens with a shot of Amy with her head resting on Nick Dunne (Affleck) as they lay on the bed. His narration grabs the audience’s attention with the violent imagery which immediately makes us a bit suspicious of Nick.

Even more than that, it gives a hint at their failing marriage and the twisted way they view marriage. These two people may live together, they may be married together, and they may cuddle on a bed together. But they don’t really know each other.

9 Whoever Took Her Is Bound To Bring Her Back

Carrie Coon makes an excellent feature film debut in Gone Girl as Margot Dunne, Nick’s supportive yet worried sister. She is the perfect combination of a loving sibling and someone who recognizes her brother’s faults.

She is also not a big fan of her sister-in-law and while she is concerned to hear Amy is missing, she can’t help but crack a joke. Knowing how difficult Amy can be, Margot insists whoever kidnapped her would likely get annoyed and return her soon.

8 This Man Of Mine May Kill Me

We don’t meet Amy before her disappearance. Instead, we are introduced to her through her diary entries which lead to flashbacks of her relationship with Nick over the years. While the entries begin as sweet and happy, they begin to take a dark turn.

Following an entry that details a time Nick hit her, Amy admits her very real fear of Nick and the final entry reveals she thinks he is capable of killing her. As Nick puts it once he is shown the diary, it’s a bit of a convenient final entry.

7 I’m So Much Happier Now That I’m Dead

The movie reveals its big, mind-blowing twist halfway through the runtime. After hearing the narration of her various diary entries, Amy speaks to us once again but starts with the startling line which confirms she has planned her own death.

Clearly, something is wrong with this woman as she explains how she seeks to get back at her cheating husband by meticulously planning this fake kidnapping which will likely place Nick in prison or even on death row.

6 A Monkey Who Doesn’t Get The Lethal Injection

One of the most interesting aspects of the movie is how it examines the media’s role in these high-profile crime stories. It doesn’t take long for the media and tabloids to turn against Nick which only makes him look guiltier.

Nick eventually hires defense attorney Tanner Bolt to represent him and Tanner teaches him how to use the media to his advantage. Though he believes Nick’s story that Amy is behind all this, he still insists they play to the media. Nick remarks he’ll be a dancing monkey while Tanner reminds him, “A monkey who doesn’t get the lethal injection.”

5 Come Home, Amy. I Dare You

Once he has discovered what Amy has done to him, Nick realizes there is no way he can prove his innocence unless Amy miraculously reappears. That is when Nick starts to play into Amy’s game.

Going on national television, Nick acts like a loving and worried husband while giving a subtle and hidden hint to Amy who is watching while in hiding. Knowing that she will likely be enticed to take the bait, Nick speaks to himself, daring her to come back so he can face her.

4 You F***ing B****

Just as the story of Amy and Nick could not possibly get any crazier, Amy returns home. With countless news vans parked outside Nick’s house, Amy drives up to the house, covered in blood, and embraces her husband.

As the journalists and bystanders film the incredible moment, Nick pulls his wife close and calls her out for her insane plan to destroy him. It is a hilarious line juxtaposed to the seemingly happy reunion for the couple.

3 You Two Are The Most F***ed Up People I’ve Ever Known

The multi-talented Tyler Perry has an excellent supporting role in the movie as Tanner Bolt, Nick’s defense lawyer. Despite hearing the wild story of how Amy framed Nick, Tanner is less shocked and more amused by the lengths she will go.

Once she does return and drags Nick back into her game, Tanner is still just tickled by how these two are the most “f***ed up people I’ve ever known,” and he adds “And I specialize in f***ed up.”

2 I’ve Killed For You. Who Else Can Say That?

There are plenty of shocking moments throughout the movie, but the most shocking has to be the death of Desi, a man who has long had an obsession with Amy and whom she has used for years. When hiding out, she decides to play the victim to Desi who hides her in his lake house.

When she decides she wants to return to Nick, she uses Desi one last time by killing him and making him look like her abductor. Amy not only admits this to Nick, but she uses it as a way of proving her devotion to him.

1 What Have We Done To Each Other? What Will We Do?

The movie ends with the same image of Amy and Nick in bed together. Once again, Nick muses about what his wife is thinking and the mysteries of their marriage. However, this time the image and the dialogue has a whole new meaning.

Nick is not looking down at his loving wife and wondering what she is thinking, he is looking at someone he does not trust and who he is trapped with while wondering what other terrible things they are capable of doing to each other.
