With Coronavirus making the rounds across the globe, authorities and medical experts are advising us all to avoid large crowds and events, work from home, and take a few basic precautions to limit our exposure. Every estimate says the world will soon bounce back to normal, but with the virus on people’s minds, it’s wise to stay indoors and wait things out.
That means you and your family have a little extra time to pile up in front of the television, make some popcorn and watch a few fun movies! Here’s a list of 10 light-hearted, fun comedies that are sure to make everyone feel better while this ugly little virus runs its course. Chin up, everyone!
10 THE ‘BURBS (1989)
Back in the day, Tom Hanks enjoyed making comedies. Lots of comedies. He produced a string of hilarious hits during the 1980s, which culminated in The ‘Burbs, a 1989 gem featuring Hanks in the role of a middle-aged suburban dad who suspects that his new neighbors are up to no good. As paranoia envelopes the neighborhood, he teams up with several other eccentric neighbors to investigate and bring them to justice.
This leads to a madcap series of mishaps and screw-ups as they dig a deeper hole for themselves, and threaten to blow their own cover. The comedic spookiness of the film, mixed with the hilarious physical comedy and Tom Hanks’ one-of-a-kind brand of humor, make The ‘Burbs a fun hit for the family.
9 BABY’S DAY OUT (1994)
This mid-90’s hit remains one of the funniest physical comedy films ever made. The plot revolves around a newborn baby who is kidnapped by three criminals seeking a ransom from his rich parents.
It soon becomes clear that the kidnappers (led perfectly by Joe Mantegna) bit off more than they could chew, as Baby Bink single-handedly leads them into a series of insanely funny scenarios where they are set on fire, beaten up by Gorillas and dropped off of buildings.
8 BLAME IT ON THE BELLBOY (1992)
Critics didn’t care much for this 1992 comedy, but ignore all that. Blame It On The Bellboy puts Perfect Strangers’ Bronson Pinchot in the role of a bellboy working at an illustrious hotel in Venice who mixes up the names of three guests with similar names.
Soon, a real estate appraiser gets mixed up with the mob, while an assassin incorrectly targets a female blind date, and a lecherous philanderer finds himself buying a villa for no apparent reason. Figured it out yet? At just 75 minutes, it’s a brisk film that dives straight into the funny parts!
7 FATHER OF THE BRIDE (1991)
This remake of the Spencer Tracy classic is arguably the better of the two, thanks to a solid performance by the charming cast, led by Steve Martin. The story takes place from George Banks’ point of view as he struggles to process the news that his daughter has become engaged.
After the initial shock dies down, George is thrust face-first into the world of wedding preparations. As costs continue to balloon, George begins to lose his marbles. Soon, he has a $1200 wedding cake, 200+ expensive guests, and an eccentric foreign wedding planner name Franck to deal with!
6 FOLKS! (1992)
This black comedy isn’t well suited for the youngest kids in your family, but it’s still an often overlooked classic that deserves a second look. Tom Selleck plays against type in a very rare comedic performance that lands him in the shoes of Jon Aldrich, a stockbroker whose firm is suddenly put under investigation for fraud.
That’s just the start of his troubles! Aldrich soon learns that his senile father has accidentally burnt down his own home, forcing him to take both he and his mother in to live with them. It’s a disaster from the word Go, with Aldrich suffering a series of hilarious accidents that nearly drive him insane. However, his parents have proposed a wickedly unorthodox solution: kill them, and take the insurance money. Easier said than done!
5 THE GREAT OUTDOORS
The Great Outdoors is the perfect family film with charm that could only come from the 1980s. It features the legendary John Candy as Chet Ripley, a middle-aged father who takes his family out to a small town wilderness lodge for a little bonding and relaxation.
Chet soon learns that his annoying brother-in-law Roman Craig, his wife, and kids have decided to crash the party. The tensions soon rise to unbearably funny levels as the families find themselves staring down a horrifying 96-ounce steak, a bald-headed Grizzly bear, and a family of raccoons pilfering the garbage cans each night.
4 THE PARTY (1968)
This particular comedy is pure 1960s charm, and guaranteed to lighten even the darkest moods. Peter Sellers is in top form as Hrundi V. Bakshi, an Indian actor who accidentally blows up an expensive movie set and finds himself blacklisted by Hollywood’s elite. The hilarity ensues when his name finds itself on the list of guests for a swanky party thrown by a rich studio head.
Bakshi soon finds himself mingling with the guests as a complete fish out of water. The Party is shot in a parody of the documentary style, with long scenes featuring little dialogue and massive amounts of physical comedy. Director Blake Edwards’ genius comic timing is right at the forefront, making The Party a joy to watch, over and over again.
3 SPACEBALLS
Who says sci-fi adventure and comedy can’t mix? This popular Mel Brooks parody of Star Wars pits the dashing Lone Starr against the dreaded Dark Helmet and his nefarious Spaceballs, a group of intergalactic tyrants seeking to steal all the air from the planet Druidia.
When the Druish Princess Vespa flees the planet (and her arranged marriage), the Spaceballs give chase, and Lone Starr charges to the rescue! As Dark Helmet closes in, Lone Starr is trained in the ways of The Schwartz so that the can face him in one final, funny-bone battle for the ages!
2 UHF
‘Weird Al’ Yankovic only had one major run in Hollywood with 1989’s UHF, but it’s one of the best comedies ever produced (not to mention the most insane). Yankovic plays George Newman, an eccentric everyday guy with big dreams who suddenly finds himself in charge of a decrepit television station.
Newman quickly turns UHF into the nation’s most celebrated TV station, which attracts the ire of cruel media mogul R.J. Fletcher, who sets trying to destroy the station by whatever means necessary!
1 WHAT ABOUT BOB?
Frank “Yoda” Oz directed this timeless comedy classic about Bob Wiley, a neurotic hypochondriac with a laundry list phobias who seeks out the help of a stuck-up psychiatrist named Leo Marvin. Wiley makes an appointment with Dr. Marvin in an attempt to get a handle on his life, not realizing that Marvin is about to go on vacation with his family.
Unable to cope with his anxieties, Bob hops on a bus and follows Dr. Marvin to their country house, where he manages to charm his family and ingratiate himself into their vacation. Before you know it, Bob finds himself overcoming his fears, while Marvin spirals into the throes of comedic insanity! What About Bob? is a great film for anyone looking to poke a little fun at the Coronavirus. It’s fun, sweet, and reassuring.
