10 The Last Black Man In San Francisco (2019) – 7.4

This drama follows Jimmie Fails as he attempts to own the old Victorian house that his grandfather built and have it be back in the family. Set in San Francisco, as the title suggests, we see Jimmie struggle to hold onto the life he remembers amidst the gentrification of San Francisco. Although Jimmie’s hopefulness is endearing, it also blinds him to reality and gets him into trouble on occasion. It’s a deeply emotional and heartbreaking movie about how things are continuing to change and we’re quickly losing what we once held so dear.

9 Moonlight (2016) – 7.4

This Best Picture Oscar winning film follows three different time periods in a black man’s life as he grows up in Miami. The movie centers on Chiron, but really delves into the supportive community around him and shows the good and the bad.

The movie has fantastic reviews from fans and critics alike and was nominated for countless awards and won 3 Oscars, including Mahershala Ali for Best Supporting Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.

8 Eighth Grade (2018) – 7.4

Eighth Grade is a funny and endearing coming of age story directed by comedian Bo Burnham. It is about the awkwardness in middle school as everyone’s just trying to survive and be happy. It centers on a young girl, played by Elsie Fisher, trying to get through her last week of a disastrous eighth-grade year and salvage the year by making it better. Like many A24 films, it’s a slow burn movie, but it succeeds in being relatable and a realistic representation of eighth-grade life.

7 Lady Bird (2017) – 7.4

Lady Bird centers on a high school senior of the same name, played by Saoirse Ronan, who is more than ready to leave home, specifically her mother, and move onto bigger and better things. Lady Bird and her mother are actually very similar in that they’re both headstrong, determined, and never back down.

Lady Bird deals with normal high school antics, trouble with her best friend, first boyfriends, and, to her surprise, being homesick when she finally does leave home. It’s a subtle and lovely coming-of-age story that is definitely worth a watch.

6 The Florida Project (2017) – 7.6

This film follows a young six-year-old girl, Moonee, and her mother, Halley, who lives just a few miles down the road from the self-proclaimed happiest place on Earth, Disney World, in Florida. Although she is in rough surroundings, Moonee makes the best of things, as any child does, with her imagination. With help from their gruff motel manager who’s hiding a heart of gold, played by Willem Dafoe, he helps to hide the despair of their surroundings and continues to enrich her fantasy while her mother has to find increasingly dangerous jobs in order to survive. It’s a beautifully crafted film that has a lot of heart and is worth the watch.

5 Uncut Gems (2019) – 7.6

This intense crime thriller follows a gambler, played by Adam Sandler, as he tries to win his next big score. Set in New York City, we see Sandler’s character trying to balance his family, job as a jeweler, and continuing to make high-stake bets with intense results. The movie has great reviews and the audience sees the dramatic side of Sandler that he brings out every now and then.

4 The Lighthouse (2019) – 7.7

This claustrophobic film follows two men who are tasked with taking care of a lighthouse (Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson). The condensed aspect ratio and black and white give a certain feel to the film that immediately lets the audience feel what the two main characters are feeling.

It’s a creepy and beautifully done film that gives the viewer a sense of dread as the two men are stuck together, continually getting on each other’s nerves, and we know one or both of them will snap and we’re just waiting for the inevitable conclusion.

3 The Farewell (2019) – 7.7

The Farewell centers on a young Chinese American, played by Awkwafina, who is devastated when her grandmother is diagnosed with cancer. As part of their Chinese culture, the family decides not to tell the grandmother of her diagnosis because it is believed that the stress and depression will kill you before cancer kills you. This complicates things as she decides to join her family for a fake wedding in China so they can all visit her grandmother under false pretenses. The movie is deeply emotional and yet has some great comedic moments with fantastic acting from the ensemble cast.

2 Ex Machina (2014) – 7.7

This psychological sci-fi thriller sees Domhnall Gleeson working at a tech company and winning a trip to meet their elusive owner, Oscar Isaac.

Gleeson’s character quickly realizes that this isn’t just a fun visit and Isaac’s CEO has a task for him to complete, specifically conducting a Turing Test on his new AI invention, played by Alicia Vikander. Reality begins to blur as Gleeson’s character becomes closer and closer to Vikander’s AI form and secrets about Isaac are revealed. It’s an engaging and stunning sci-fi film with stunning acting from the three, definitely worth a watch.

1 Room (2015) – 8.1

Focusing solely on a relationship between a mother and son and takes place in one room, hence the title. Her son does not know the situation, that she was kidnapped and had him and they’re still being confined to the single room, and she gives her son the best life she can given the circumstances. As her son grows up, he becomes increasingly curious about their situation and they plan a daring escape. Brie Larson won numerous awards for lead actress in her portrayal of Ma, including an Oscar, and the movie has great reviews.
