Thaal Sinestro was created by John Broome and Gil Kane in 1961. He is one of the Green Lantern Corps’ greatest enemies and a personal rival to Hal Jordan. Sinestro is one of the most interesting villains in DC Comics. He’s been everything from the “greatest Green Lantern,” to a universe-dominating villain, to a reformed Green Lantern.

Sinestro is as complex a character as the heroes he battles. He is not simply a maniacal villain who wants to do evil things. He is a mastermind who believes the Guardians are unfit to watch over the universe. He feels he can do better. In some cases, he may have been right. Sinestro is as important to the Green Lantern mythos as Hal Jordan or any other ring-wielder, and he’s proven it in comics that wouldn’t have been half as good without his presence.

10 First Appearance In Green Lantern Vol.2 #7

Sinestro first appeared in Green Lantern Vol.2 #7. From his very first panel, readers knew that Sinestro was once a Green Lantern. The Guardians explained that because Sinestro used fear in his heroics, they saw evil in his heart, so they banished him to the antimatter universe.

The banishment the Guardians hoped would reform Sinestro only made his hatred of them even stronger. When Hal first encounters Sinestro, he is already plotting with the Weaponers to destroy the Guardians. Sinestro is an interesting, complex character and his journey begins here.

9 Sinestro Wields A Yellow Power Ring For The First Time

Not long after his debut, Sinestro returns in Green Lantern Vol.2 #9, more determined than ever to get revenge on the Guardians who banished him from the universe. This issue marks the first appearance of a yellow power ring. However, the ring Sinestro uses in this issue is very different from the one most fans would be familiar with.

This yellow ring merely siphons power from other power rings, instead of generating its own through fear. As with many things in Green Lantern mythos, the lore of the yellow ring would later be retconned and expanded, but seeing it used for the first time here is still a treat.

8 Sinestro’s Death At The Hands Of Hal Jordan

After the destruction of his home, Coast City, Hal Jordan went on a rampage against the Green Lantern Corps and the Guardians of the Universe, gaining more power in hopes of eventually resurrecting his home. After obtaining power rings from fallen Lanterns, Hal becomes too powerful, forcing the Guardians to release Sinestro to stop him.

The battle depicted in Green Lantern Vol.3 #50 is brutal and the way it ends is even worse. Hal breaks Sinestro’s neck, plunging himself into darkness and taking the final step toward becoming Parallax. Sinestro relishes in the fear of loss that has consumed Hal, knowing his heroic adversary has become a villain.

7 Sinestro Returns In Green Lantern: Rebirth

If some evil force opposes the Green Lantern Corps, Sinestro is usually behind it. While imprisoned in the Green Lantern Central Power Battery, Sinestro discovers the existence of Parallax, the Fear Entity that causes the yellow impurity in their power rings. Sinestro helps Parallax infect Hal, corrupting him to destroy the Corps.

Only through Kyle Rayner, the power of Ion, the Entity of Will, and Hal’s own strong will, are the Green Lantern Corps restored. Sinestro is an amazing villain, but thanks to the writing of Geoff Johns, after Green Lantern: Rebirth, he becomes one of the best villains in DC Comics.

6 The Sinestro Corps Special Leads To The Sinestro Corps War

The first few pages of Green Lantern: Sinestro Corps Special tell you everything you need to know about Sinestro: “the greatest Green Lantern” banished from the Corps, then blinded by the beauty of fear but sought to harness its power, and now seeks revenge on Hal Jordan and Kyle Rayner.

This issue marks the beginning of Sinestro’s grand plan to dethrone the Guardians of the Universe. Sinestro, for all his might, has always been vastly outnumbered by the Green Lantern Corps. But now he has a Corps of his own. This one-shot kicks off the Sinestro Corps War, one of the greatest Green Lantern epics of all time.

5 Sinestro Mentors Hal In Secret Origin

Following the epic Sinestro Corps War, writer Geoff Johns slowed things down and brought readers back to the days before Hal Jordan was chosen to join the Green Lantern Corps. Hal was just a test pilot, Abin Sur was obsessed with dark visions of the future, and Sinestro still wore a green power ring.

“Secret Origin,” collecting Green Lantern Vol.4 #29-35, is just as much Sinestro’s story as it is Hal’s. The future adversaries’ first meeting is presented and expanded in this arc. Readers get a closer look at the type of person Sinestro was in the final days of wielding a Green Lantern ring.

4 Reinstated As A Green Lantern

At the end of the “War of the Green Lanterns” arc, a green power ring selects Sinestro. Trusting the artificial judgment of the rings, the Guardians allow Sinestro to again become a Green Lantern, much to the dismay of Hal Jordan and Sinestro himself.

When DC launched the New 52, rebooting their titles back to #1, Sinestro was the face of the Green Lantern book. The first arc of the series sees Hal and Sinestro working together as Green Lanterns. It was nice to see Sinestro back in green, for however brief it was, and to get a sense of the man he was when he first joined the Corps.

3 Geoff Johns Ends His Run With An Epic Showdown

Green Lantern Vol.5 #20 was the last issue of Geoff Johns’s nine-year run on the series. Over those nine years, Johns introduced the emotional spectrum, gave Sinestro his own Corps, and so much more. Issue #20 is the culmination of incredibly epic stories like the Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night.

While all seven Corps battle Volthoom, the First Lantern, Sinestro absorbs the power of Parallax and engages in one last epic showdown with Hal Jordan. In the end, Sinestro escapes, but not before revealing his true admiration and feelings of friendship for Hal that he’s had, beneath the rivalry, all these years.

2 Sinestro Stars In His Own Comic Book Series

In 2014, Sinestro finally earned his own comic book series. Sinestro #1 presents readers with a broken, beaten Sinestro. A shell of his former self, he’s lost all motivation to grow his power so he secludes himself on an alien world. Lyssa Drak, the lore keeper of the Yellow Lanterns, arrives and convinces Sinestro to rise up and continue his quest for power and control.

Sinestro rediscovers why he was drawn to the power of fear in the first place. Even though this series was published 53 years after Sinestro’s comic book debut in Green Lantern, it still reads like an origin story and is a fantastic issue for anyone interested in learning who Sinestro is and what drives him.

1 Sinestro Controls Parallax In Hal Jordan & The Green Lantern Corps

In 2016, DC relaunched all their books under the Rebirth banner and one of the new series was titled Hal Jordan & The Green Lantern Corps. When this series began, the Green Lantern Corps were thought to be lost and the Sinestro Corps filled the vacuum as the new guardians of the universe.

In order to restore his failing body, Sinestro once again merged with Parallax the Fear Entity and led the Sinestro Corps back to their old ways of fear and control. In issues #1-7, Hal and Sinestro duel for one final time before Sinestro is destroyed. Fear makes Sinestro strong, but when he faces those who can overcome fear, like Hal Jordan, Sinestro sees fear’s greatest weakness: will.
