One of the most underrated and underappreciated animated epics of all time has to be DreamWorks’s The Prince of Egypt. Films inspired by Biblical history definitely have to have a grand sense of scale and substance to them, but for an animated film to go this far is simply astounding.

For those of you who haven’t seen the film, it’s the story of Moses from the book of Exodus told through a talented cast, beautiful animation, and phenomenal music. To show our appreciation, here’s a list of 10 things you might not know about this awesome animated film.

10 It Was Once the Most Expensive Animated Film Ever Made

The Prince of Egypt is without a doubt one of the most beautiful animated films of all time, but all that technique and talent definitely comes at a price. Although animated films today can cost over 200 million dollars to make, at the time, this animated Exodus took the title for the most expensive animated film of all time.

The filmmakers were given a budget of 70 million dollars to bring this project to life, and it very well made its budget back and then some. Although some CGI is used, you can truly see the attention to detail and dedication with its traditionally animated design and features.

9 It Could Also Be a Remake of The Ten Commandments

Any movie buff will tell you that the Prince of Egypt is not the only depiction of Moses known to the world. The Oscar-winning epic, The Ten Commandments, is often discussed along with the animated film, which should come as no surprise. What surprises us, however, is that some consider this film a remake of the Charlton Heston classic.

Plot and source material aside, The Prince of Egypt takes a great deal from The Ten Commandments. both films have a star-studded cast, their depiction of Moses is similar in many regards, and both films add a human element of complexity to the biblical narrative. Either way, it’s still quite impressive.

8 It Features a Surprisingly Star-Studded Cast

Like The Ten Commandments before it, The Prince of Egypt features a huge cast of well-known performers, many of them Oscar winners or Oscar nominees. Not only that, but the cast is incredibly diverse in its makeup of talent, calling forth stars of the stage, screen, and stand-up comedy.

The cast prominently features Val Kilmer and Ralph Fiennes in the lead roles as Moses and Rameses respectively, but it also features quite a selection in the supporting cast, including Sir Patrick Stewart, Jeff Goldblum, Michelle Pfeiffer, and even Steve Martin and Martin Short. Talk about a selection of talent.

7 Katzenberg Played Nice for this Film

Anyone who’s familiar with Walt Disney Pictures, Disney Animation Studios, or even animation as a whole knows about the reputation of Jeffrey Katzenberg. And anyone who’s ever seen the likes of The Black Cauldron or The Lion King will tell you that he doesn’t play well with others. Surprisingly, he changed his attitude to do this project.

The story of Moses is one of the most important features of the Abrahamic religions, so it makes sense that it needed to be handled with care. Katzenberg reportedly worked with many biblical and Judeo-Christian scholars to make sure this film was done correctly. If nothing else, we’ll applaud him for that.

6 Hans Zimmer and Stephen Schwartz did the Music

One of the most prominent features of the film is without a doubt its music. A story as grand and iconic as The Exodus definitely needs a soundtrack that is just as powerful as the hand of God. DreamWorks definitely made the right call enlisting the help of Hans Zimmer and Stephen Schwartz to create the film’s spectacular sound.

Hans Zimmer is no stranger to creating epic scores, just look at his work on The Lion King, Gladiator, and, The Last Samurai. but we definitely have to give special recognition to the lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, the mind behind the likes of Godspell and Wicked. Their partnership is practically perfect.

5 Pay Attention During the Plagues

“The Plagues” sequence in the film is without a doubt one of the most chilling and poignant moments throughout the experience. Upon first viewing, viewers might only focused on the visually striking representation of God’s wrath on Egypt. What I might miss is the little details and how the plagues affect the characters.

To prominent examples are the phenomenal lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, and how the plague affect Ramses. In accordance with scripture, the pharaoh’s heart is hardened even during this time of Crisis, but if you look closer it’s actually taking a toll on him. He even has boils on his back during that plague. That’s some impressive visual storytelling.

4 Steve Martin and Martin Short Recorded Together

A portion of the film’s comedic elements come from Hotep and Huy, the magicians/priests in the pharaoh’s court. This is mainly thanks to comedians Steve Martin and Martin Short. The pair have collaborated frequently, and it should come as no surprise that even during this film they worked exclusively together.

Much like their characters in the film, Martin and Short work best when playing off one another. Even their eerie villain song “Playing with the Big Boys Now” has a certain element of humor and showmanship. Two heads are definitely better than one.

3 Moses Discards his Sandals

The film definitely pulls a lot from scripture, that much is given. But it does take one or two liberties with it as well. That being said, we couldn’t help but notice one interesting filmmaking decision that while not verbatim actually carries a chunk of spiritual significance.

In Exodus 3:5, God commands Moses to take off his sandals while standing on holy ground in front of the burning bush.

2 Val Kilmer is Also God

The voice of God was a thoroughly discussed subject in the making of This film. Supposedly, at one point it was going to be the entire cast reading the lines of God. This proved problematic, so the filmmakers took another note from the Ten Commandments. the voice of Moses is also the voice of God.

This decision was possibly made due to Charlton Heston’s uncredited role as the voice of God in the original Ten Commandments. While Val Kilmer is phenomenal as Moses, there is definitely something to be said for his portrayal of God as well.

1 It’s Also a Stage Musical

Definitely something you might not know about this film is that it was made into a musical in 2017, but a proper West End production was not announced until recently. With a 2020 large-scale production on the horizon, how long will it be before it crosses the Atlantic and gets a Broadway version here in the states?

The cast album is soon to drop this April, and we can hardly wait to hear the recording of a new experience based on the film. The soundtrack will feature the same music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, so we know it’s in good hands. If it’s anything like the original from 1998, we’re definitely in for a treat.
