10 Hidden Details You Missed In The Worlds End

With the events of the real-world being what they are at the moment, a movie called The World’s End might not sound too appealing. But this hilarious science-fiction comedy from Edgar Wright might be the perfect distraction at a time like this.

The film follows a group of middle-aged friends who return to their hometown for a pub crawl only to find that things are not quite right. As with all of Edgar Wright’s films, The World’s End is packed with laughs and hidden jokes that make it extremely entertaining no matter how many times someone has seen it. Here are some hidden details you might have missed about The World’s End.

10 The Cornetto Trilogy

The World’s End is the final entry into Wright’s “Cornetto Trilogy,” preceded by Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz. Wright views these films similarly to Sergio Leone’s “Dollars Trilogy,” in that they share similar styles and cast members without actually being connected.

The cornetto aspect of the title refers to the ice cream treat that is featured briefly in each film, with the color of the wrapper relating to the plot. In The World’s End, a cornetto with a green wrapper is seen near the end, which represents the extraterrestrial aspect of the story.

9 Last Names

We are introduced to the five main friends of the story in the excellent opening montage that details their first attempt at the “Golden Mile” pub crawl when they were younger. The sequence cleverly mirrors what will happen later in the film, along with serving as a great way to introduce the heroes.

With everything going on in this sequence, it is simple to miss the interesting nod with the characters’ names. King Arthur and the Knights of the Roundtable are brought up at several points, and to further that connection, the heroes’ names all reflect medieval positions, like Gary King, Andy Knightley, and Steven Prince.

8 Shooting Star

There is very little backstory given to the extraterrestrial beings who have invaded the town of Newton Haven or where they come from. This is not really an issue as the mysterious aspect is effective. However, Basil does tell Steven that they arrived on the night of the original pub crawl and a shooting star indicated their arrival.

Looking back on that opening montage, the arrival is indeed foreshadowed. As the remaining friends overlook their town as the sun begins to rise, a very faint shooting star can be seen in the sky.

7 Pub Names

Apart from getting introduced to all the main characters, the opening sequence also serves to highlight each pub they will be visiting during the pub crawl. While they all might seem like generic pub names at first, it becomes clear that Wright named them quite deliberately.

Each of the pub names hints at something that will happen while the friends are there. The First Post is the first they visit. The Crossed Hands is where they fight the blanks. The Hole in the Wall is where Steven crashes the car through the wall. Each pub also features a number somewhere inside to indicate where it stands on the pub crawl.

6 Starbucking

The second pub that the friends visit on the pub crawl is the Old Familiar. As the name hints at, it heavily resembles the First Post. However, there are more clever details at work here beyond the name.

The friends remark that the reason the two pubs look so similar is because of big businesses buying up small-town pubs and converting them into chains that are just copies of each other. Of course, this is exactly the plan the blanks are attempting with the human race.

5 Pub Game

The fact that the heroes of the story spend a lot of time in the movie fighting off hordes of enemies might seem a bit familiar to fans of Shaun of the Dead. In that film, the heroes hide in a pub while the zombie apocalypse is happening outside.

That connection was certainly not lost on Wright, who referenced this similarity through a subtle joke. In one of the pubs, a game machine is briefly shown that plays the same music as the game machine Ed (Nick Frost) uses in Shaun of the Dead.

4 Paint It Red

Wright loves to throw in little bits of foreshadowing in his films that likely no one will pick up on until they’ve rewatched the movie several times. Sometimes, it comes as a simple throwaway line that many viewers wouldn’t think twice about.

When Gary and his friends are driving into Newton Haven, they look down on the town and Gary makes a comment about “painting it red” that night. By the end of the night, they have triggered the end of the world and the sky above the town turns red.

3 Five Musketeers

Along with King Arthur and his knights, another group of legendary heroes mentioned throughout the film is the Three Musketeers. Although, Gary is a little bit confused about just how many there actually were (as well as whether or not they were real).

Gary calls the group the “Five Musketeers” before the others correct him. However, he maintains that there should have been five of them because then two could die and there’d still be three. Ultimately, that’s what happens to this group as Oliver and Peter don’t make it out alive.

2 Cameos

Apart from Eddie Marsan who plays Peter, all of the other members of the group are performed by actors who appeared in the Cornetto Trilogy. However, Wright brings along plenty of other friends for cameos in the film.

Bill Nighy, who appeared in both Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, provides the voice of the Network at the end of the movie. Also, the two zombies that are attacked with vinyl records in Shaun of the Dead make brief appearances. The female zombie is one of the support group members sitting next to Gary, and the bigger zombie is seen in the pub at the end of the film.

1 Ordering Water

Despite all the excitement and laughs, this movie also touches on some heavy subject matter with Gary’s addiction. It also becomes a point of contention between Gary and Andy. Andy has quit drinking and orders water at the bar, much to Gary’s disgust.

Andy defends himself by saying that it takes genuine courage to walk into a pub filled with big, mean men and order water. At the end of the film, Gary walks into the post-apocalyptic bar filled with scary people and confidently orders water.
