Absurdist or surreal comedy is not new by any means. It’s been written and performed for years, but has certainly come into its own within the last decade or so. This is a style of comedy that’s different, strange, and almost always weird. Absurdist comedy subverts expectations and exudes a strong sense of randomness, nonsense, and unpredictability. 9 Nathan For You (Hulu/HBO)

This docu-reality comedy show from the mind of Nathan Fielder shows him trying to help businesses with wild and goofy ideas to promote and increase their business. It is a comedy show, but the owners of the businesses Nathan is trying to help don’t know this, which creates terribly awkward and hilarious encounters and reactions.

Nathan both parodies certain marketing techniques and comes up with his own outlandish ideas while playing himself as someone with severe levels of social anxiety, creating a show full of cringe and comedy.

8 The Mighty Boosh (Hulu)

Created by “The Mighty Boosh” British comedy troupe, this show of the same name follows Howard and Vince as they have surreal adventures in search of fame. Accompanied by an alien shaman and a gorilla, the characters frequently break the fourth wall and break out into ridiculous musical numbers in a wide variety of styles.

Each season shows the two main characters in different contexts, as zookeepers, then flatmates, then workers at a magical shop, without much continuity or linear storylines. They continue to get into strange situations and trouble, beginning a wacky and surreal adventure every episode.

7 Check It Out! With Dr. Steve Brule (HBO Max)

Created as a spin-off to Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, Check It Out! centers on Dr. Steve Brule, a goofy, awkward, and extremely naive character that hosts a show to reveal the lives of normal people. He explores numerous different careers and hobbies through the lens of an old 1980’s public-access show, one that is severely underfunded and not made very well.

But the real genius of the show comes from John C. Reilly’s delivery and improvisation of his character Steve Brule, who is always funny, mispronounces words and names, and overall clueless as to what he’s making the show about.

6 Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job! (HBO Max)

This wild show from Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim has spurred numerous spin-offs and movies and has certainly influenced the next generation of absurdist comedy creators. Composed of sketches, music, and commercial parodies, the show’s ingenuity comes from the great writing and editing, often combining surreal, cringe, and anti-humor into one giant heap of weird comedy.

The editing is trippy and strange, the characters are often awkward and distressed, and the writing is unhinged and unpredictable. This all creates a wild world of strange humor and creativity that is surely unique and hilarious.

5 Monty Python’s Flying Circus (Netflix)

As one of the original absurdist comedy troupes, Monty Python brings an enormous amount of creativity and humor to their show Flying Circus. Originally airing in 1969, Flying Circus is a sketch show about anything and everything, often making fun of or spoofing British daily life and politics.

Littered with sexual innuendo, risque humor, brilliant gags, and absurd situations, the show was a huge influence for all sketch comedy that came after it. 4 I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson (Netflix)

From SNL writer Tim Robinson comes this hilarious and absurd sketch show that has one goal in every sketch: getting people to leave. By creating ridiculous and surreal situations, Robinson and cast explore outlandish ideas and loud characters, building and building each sketch until another character can’t take it anymore.

With fantastic writing and impeccable delivery, each sketch places viewers in a strange and demented world with wacky characters and sharp dialogue. Every sketch increases in strangeness every minute until either intentionally or unintentionally pushing the other characters to their limits in an absurd, grandiose fashion.

3 Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House Of Fun (Netflix)

With an adoring fanbase garnered from YouTube and live shows, Australian comedy troupe Aunty Donna’s first TV show is a big ol’ house of fun, and it sure is crazy. With loosely plotted episodes moving from sketch to sketch, the show exudes energy and wonderful comedic timing.

Along with simply wild plots and ridiculous encounters and conversations, the show also has numerous musical numbers and a variety of guest stars. Even the writing and editing is ridiculous and spot-on, meshing perfectly with the actor’s flamboyance and wackiness.

2 Mr. Show (HBO Max)

From the minds of David Cross and Bob Odenkirk comes Mr. Show, one of the smartest and most underrated sketch comedy shows ever put on television. Each episode starts like many other sketch shows – the hosts come out on stage to speak in front of an audience – but what viewers don’t know is that the sketch has already started.

Each sketch flows perfectly into the next, from live jokes on a stage to pre-recorded segments, there’s always something that leads one sketch to the next in some brilliant manner, whether it be from a character or creative editing. The sketches themselves may be simple or complex, but the comedy is so on the nose, bursting with satire and wit, that it’s impossible not to laugh.

1 The Eric Andre Show (Hulu)

One of the most popular examples of absurdist humor on TV today, The Eric Andre Show is a brilliant spoof of late-night television talk-shows and on-the-street gags and pranks. Eric Andre does bring real guests on the show, but they usually have no idea what is actually in store for them. He tortures them in numerous ways, like turning the heat up in the studio, putting insects and vermin under their chair, or creating lavish pranks and asking absurd questions.

There is also hilarious physical comedy, like Andre breaking through all of his desks and destroying the studio, as well as real pranks and interviews on the street, all of which are wonderfully and chaotically edited to create a montage of hilarity, every episode.
