If you have heard of Martyrs, you might have been scared off by rumors of how dark and disturbing this film is. Before you watch it, be prepared for grisly horror and horrific amounts of torture and gore. If that doesn’t scare you off, then you should give Martyrs a chance.

Be sure you watch the original version rather than the U.S. remake. The movie follows two young girls who were horrifically abused as children and their bloody journey for revenge. The movie goes to the truly dark and depraved corners of humanity.

9 Suspiria (1977)

Young Suzy Bannon arrives in Germany at an exclusive dance school to study ballet. However, upon arrival, she witnesses a young girl fleeing, the first sign that something terrible is going on at this building. The longer she stays, the more strange and twisted things she sees happen, including her own nightmarish dreams and visions.

Suzy eventually learns that the school is run by a vicious coven that worships the Three Mothers. But you’ll find the movie is one of the most twisted in horror. It’s a classic. If you like, you can also watch the 2018 remake starring Dakota Johnson, it’s also very good, and stylistically different than the original.

8 Bride of Frankenstein (1935)

Bride of Frankenstein is a legitimate classic. The film has a perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes and in general, has received critical acclaim from film critics. Even though you might have seen the original Frankenstein film, there is a chance you might have missed out on the Bride of Frankenstein.

This movie involves Dr. Frankenstein testing fate once again as he tries to create a monstrous mate equal to the monster he has already created.

7 The Orphanage (2007)

This Spanish ghost story film follows a woman who decides to buy the orphanage where she grew up because she remembers having happy memories over there. But then her adopted son suddenly goes missing and she receives mysterious help from the ghosts that haunt the place.

But are they being helpful or do they have darker intentions? This isn’t a movie with much gore or blood, it’s more about the atmosphere and suspense but it is very well made.

6 The Haunting (1963)

Have you ever read The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson? If so, you may have seen the Netflix version of the series. The Netflix version is excellent but it’s not necessarily an exact adaptation of the book. This movie is the original adaptation of and it’s a fantastic film and considered a horror masterpiece.

You’ll follow Theo, Nell, Luke, and Doctor Markway as they move into Hill House and begin to study it for supernatural phenomena. Again, this movie is all about the suspense as it is a psychological horror film. But everyone should watch it at least once.

Aoyama is trying to date, just like any woman! Except, in this case, she decides to conduct fake auditions with the help of a friend so she can find the perfect guy. Eventually, she finds herself drawn to a man named Asami, he appears kind and like the perfect date.

But it doesn’t take long for Aoyama to realize there is more to Asami than meets the eye. This Japanese thriller film is intense, disturbing, and completely gripping.

4 The Descent (2005)

A group of women decides to go spelunking into caves and discover there is something waiting down there to greet them. Terrifying creatures dwell below that have a taste for human flesh and the women are soon embedded in a fight for their lives.

As if it wasn’t bad enough to have to fend off monsters that want to kill you, imagine doing it in a confined, pitch-black space beneath the earth.

3 Raw (2016)

This French horror film is one of a kind and an incredibly graphic, visceral, journey of one woman’s journey into becoming a cannibal. She begins as a strict vegetarian but after a sick hazing ritual, she begins to develop an incessant craving for meat.

Her cravings become extreme and eventually lead her to try human flesh, which she discovers she has a real taste for. Before starting this film, be warned that it is not for the faint of heart. There is some extremely graphic imagery that is sure to turn your stomach.

2 Excision (2012)

Excision is one of those movies that just happen to fly under the radar. The movie stars Annalynne McCord and is one of her best roles to date. The horror movie focuses on McCord’s character, Pauline, a young woman with a fascination for blood, surgery, and mutilation.

She often has vivid fantasies about blood and about mutilating people she knows. Generally, these lead her to an orgasmic state. This psychosexual horror film follows Pauline’s dark and deranged journey.

1 Annihilation (2017)

Directed by Alex Garland, the same guy who directed Ex Machina, Annihilation is a science fiction horror film starring Natalie Portman, Tessa Thompson, Oscar Isaac, and Gina Rodriguez. The film is based on the Southern Reach trilogy by Jeff Vandermeer. It came out fairly recently but many people missed the movie in theaters because of poor marketing.

It follows an expedition into the mysterious Area X. No one knows where Area X came from but you must cross the Shimmer to enter it and inside is untold horror and strange dissociative setting. Not everyone who goes into Area X comes out, and if they do, they are rarely ever the same again.
