10 Viola Davis In Disturbia

Partially inspired by Rear Window, Disturbia is a modern take on the familiar concept of a man stuck inside his home, under house arrest in this case, spying on his neighbors when he believes he witnesses a murder. Viola Davis, who plays Amanda Waller in the DCEU, plays Detective Parker, the detective assigned to Kale’s case.

The movie is a fun and thrilling ride that differentiates itself from other takes on Rear Window, with its sense of humor and youthful perspective. Disturbia benefits from some strong performances and a surprising amount of heart, proving itself to be a great suspense film for Hitchock fans.

Inspired by the actual case files of Ed and Lorraine Warren, The Conjuring is a supernatural horror film that follows a couple of paranormal investigators as they try to help a family who experiencing paranormal activities in their home. Before appearing as Orm Marius in Aquaman, Patrick Wilson starred in The Conjuring as Ed Warren.

While the movie does not reinvent the demonic activity genre, it is a solid, entertaining, and scary entry. Slick directing from James Wan, good lead performances, and well-executed scares make The Conjuring a cult classic that managed to launch its own cinematic universe.

8 Yahya Abdul-Mateen II In Candyman

2021’s Candyman is a sequel to the classic ’90s slasher of the same name. The film follows Anthony as he returns to the now gentrified Cabrini-Green housing projects, looking for artistic inspiration but encounters the legend of Candyman. Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who plays Black Manta from Aquaman, stars as Anthony, one of the best characters in Candyman.

The film is an excellent modernization of the seminal horror franchise. It effectively uses the foundation of the first film to craft a timely and relevant narrative packed, with social commentary. Candyman is a well-acted and skillfully directed horror film with a message.

7 Ewan McGregor In Doctor Sleep

The long-awaited sequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep follows a now-grown-up Danny Torrance as he is forced to face his past and use his abilities as he tries to save the life of a young girl. In addition to playing Roman Sionis in the DCEU, Ewan McGregor plays Danny Torrance in Doctor Sleep.

The film is a slow burn that uses the horror genre to look at the effects of substance abuse and trauma. While its pacing and length are not for everyone, the film is undeniably beautifully shot and powerfully acted.

6 Laurence Fishburne In A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors

A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors sees Nancy, the final girl from the first film, return and lead a group of patients at a psychiatric hospital in the fight against slasher, Freddy Krueger. Perry White actor Laurence Fishburne plays Max Daniels, a kindly orderly at the hospital.

The movie is a creative and inventive entry in the franchise that gives more agency to the human characters. The film is considered the best and one of the scariest movies in the A Nightmare on Elm Street franchise.

5 Lauren Cohan In The Boy

The Boy follows Greta, a nanny who is hired to take care of a doll named Brahms as if it were a real boy, which leads Greta to begin questioning what is actually going on. Greta is played by actress Lauren Cohan, who also plays Martha Wayne in the DCEU.

While the sequel derails the franchise, this first film is an effective enough contained thriller. The simple but interesting concept is almost enough to overcome the overreliance on jump scares and predictable writing.

4 Ezra Miller In We Need To Talk About Kevin

The psychological horror film We Need to Talk About Kevin is a dark and intimate look at the relationship between a mother and her son, who exhibits increasingly concerning behavior. Ezra Miller plays the titular Kevin, a far cry from their role as The Flash.

We Need to Talk About Kevin is a terrifying story told from the perspective of someone trying to come to terms with Kevin’s behavior and actions. Without using jump scares or monsters, the film effectively taps into horrific real-world fears.

3 Nicole Kidman In The Others

The Others tells the story of a woman who lives in an old mansion with her children, who have a disease that prevents them from being able to be in sunlight. Relying more on atmosphere and tension than jump scares or gore, The Others is a classic ghost story with some well-executed twists and turns. Strong direction and an excellent performance from Nicole Kidman anchor this slow-burn horror film.

2 Mary Elizabeth Winstead In Final Destination 3

Final Destination 3 is the third entry in the series about “Death” hunting people who survive near-death experiences. In the film, high schooler Wendy has a premonition and saves some of her classmates from dying in a rollercoaster accident, only to discover that the survivors are dying in bizarre and unexpected ways. Wendy is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead, The Huntress in the DCEU.

While the movie is not the most profound or groundbreaking, it is a fun and entertaining B-horror movie full of creative death scenes. With solid humor and a strong leading performance from Mary Elizabeth Winstead, the movie is an enjoyable, albeit disposable, watch.

1 Jack Dylan Grazer In It

Based on the popular Stephen King book, It is about a group of outcast children who come together to fight a shape-shifting murderous monster that preys on children’s fears. Jack Dylan Grazer plays the younger version of Eddie Kaspbrak. He would go on to play Freddy Freeman in the DCEU.

It captures a nostalgic feel for both childhood and its 1980s setting, playing like a horror movie version of Stand By Me. The film uses likable characters, thrilling scares, and a great villain to tell an effective story about friendship and finding acceptance.
