The following is a list of new and old horror movies with a holiday theme that are sure to make Santa Claus consider skipping over your house on Christmas Eve. Get those chestnuts and brandy ready, because these movies are sure to raise the temperature.
10 Better Watch Out (2017)
Christmas takes on a zany yet ominous new meaning in this horror flick about a 12-year-old sociopath who tries to get close to his 17-year-old babysitter, even if it means murder. The filming is frantic and full of energy as classic horror tropes are turned on their head in the craziest ways.
The movie is notable for a scene where Luke tries to stage a real-life version of the swinging paint can gag from Home Alone. It’s an inventive way to nod to the audience without directly breaking the fourth wall. The film ends on a darkly comedic note that leaves plenty of room open for a sequel.
9 The Lodge (2019)
It’s not entirely Christmas-themed, but The Lodge uses its freezing cold winter theme to maximum effect while nailing the viewer with one psychological hit after another. It’s a story about a cruel prank by two children on a mentally unstable young woman that backfires in the worst way imaginable.
The film plays with the audience by providing a what-if scenario that isn’t answered until later in the film. However, once the reality comes to light, the horror doesn’t stop there. The Lodge is extremely effective at making people think twice about their own actions.
8 Christmas Evil (1980)
Black comedy and traditional horror merge together to create this quirky Christmas classic about a young boy who discovers that his beloved Santa Claus isn’t real. The effect is so traumatic that it scars the boy for life and affects him well into adulthood.
Once grown up, he starts personifying jolly old Saint Nick to the best of his ability while keeping tabs on the neighborhood children to see if they’re being naughty or nice. When people begin to ridicule him for his habits, the resulting snap sends him into a rage that goes headfirst into a killing spree.
7 Krampus (2015)
This monster movie flick stresses the importance of having the Christmas spirit—or else! The story centers on a family who gets together for the holidays and ends up fighting, which prompts a young boy to lose his enthusiasm for the holiday.
He unwittingly summons up a nasty Yuletide demon who stands in direct opposition to Santa Claus and comes to spread punishment unto the non-believing. The boy and his family are forced to face down one of the most horrific demons in movie history and hopefully regain a little Christmas cheer in the process.
6 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993)
Halloween and Christmas clash in this beloved Tim Burton classic. Pumpkin King Jack Skellington unwittingly stumbles upon the fictional realm of Christmas Town and is so taken with what he finds that he attempts to spread the holiday cheer to Halloween Town.
Unfortunately, his quest to spread some happiness to his dark town is met with some hilarious resistance by the local ghosts and goblins. It’ll take some convincing to get these night creatures to embrace the bells and holly.
5 Silent Night, Deadly Night (1984)
A traumatized young boy who witnessed his parents murdered by Santa Claus grows up to become the very thing he was most afraid of. It all starts when he spends time in an orphanage and experiences abuse at the hands of the mother superior.
After seeing two people engaged in a sexual encounter in a storage room, his mind flashes back to the traumatic moment of his childhood. From there, he sets off on a killing spree that would make Jason Vorhees sit up and take notice.
4 Red Christmas (2017)
Cujo star Dee Wallace stars in this film about a mother who’s aborted baby comes back to haunt her twenty years after the fact. The movie is a mix of social commentary with some supernatural horror elements tossed in for good measure.
The movie is loaded with blood, gore, and not much humor which makes this particular entry on the list more difficult to watch in comparison to the rest. Still, it’s a haunting story with an interesting premise that is completely different from others in its genre.
3 Black Christmas (1974)
This Canadian horror classic practically kicked off the entire horror movie slasher genre and paved the way for such iconic franchises as Friday the 13th and the spiritual successor Scream franchise. The plot centers on a group of sorority sisters who go away for the Christmas holidays, only to become the targets of a deranged serial killer.
As creepy phone calls begin to pile up, the girls soon realize that they’re in the crosshairs and next on the killer’s chopping block. The movie didn’t receive a ton of attention when it was first released, but it’s since become a staple of Christmas holiday horror musts.
2 Gremlins (1984)
Few horror movies are as obvious and perfect for the Christmas holidays as Gremlins. Steven Spielberg managed to hit the perfect mixture of horror, laughs, and slapstick gags that would eventually bring about the PG-13 rating. It’s definitely one to watch with older kids.
This timeless story about a Christmas present gone horribly wrong still holds up today thanks to an inventive premise, great characters, and a truly magnificent movie monster. Too bad it only spawned one sequel. Perhaps it’s time to resurrect the Mogwai for another go?
1 Misery (1990)
The cold and bitter winter theme of this Stephen King horror novel adaptation fits perfectly with the holiday feel of Christmas, and it deserves a spot on everyone’s watch list. Misery tells the story of a wealthy writer who gets into a horrific car accident, only to be saved by his self-proclaimed biggest fan.
She turns out to be more than he bargained for when she rages over his latest manuscript, threatening his life unless he rewrites it the way she wants. With his life on the line, it’s a battle of psychological wills to gain the upper hand and escape his captor before she goes past the point of no return.
