Though few movies actually made it into theaters in the summer of 2020, one notable release was the violent thriller, Unhinged. The film stars Russell Crowe as a deranged driver who begins stalking a woman and attempting to ruin her life after a brief moment of road rage.
The film received only mixed reviews from critics, mostly praising Crowe’s performance, but it movie does fit into a certain category of thrillers. There are many gripping films set on the road or that focus on a character who gradually unravels and goes on a terrifying rampage. Here are some of the best thrillers to watch if you liked Unhinged.
10 Death Proof (2007)
Though Death Proof is generally seen as Quentin Tarantino’s least impressive film, it is still a wild ride worth taking. The movie stars Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike, a seemingly friendly stunt driver who stalks women and murders them with his souped-up muscle car.
Tarantino creates some truly thrilling and terrifying car sequences in this film, including the phenomenal final chase scene with Zoe Bell hanging off the hood of the car. Russell makes for a great villain, but the final twist with the character is one of the funniest things you’ll ever see in a Tarantino movie.
9 Taxi Driver (1976)
While Martin Scorsese’s Taxi Driver might be considered more of a crime film than a thriller, there are plenty of moments of tension in this dark and violent New York City tale. Robert De Niro plays Travis Bickle, a lonely taxi driver who begins having violent fantasies.
A movie like Unhinged presents Crowe’s villain character as mysterious, but Taxi Driver is a deep character study of someone starting on a dark path. It is a chilling and hugely influential film that is still considered one of Scorsese’s best of all time.
8 The Hitcher (1986)
The stories of hitchhikers have always been a big part of the lore of the road, and The Hitcher will likely make anyone think twice about offering a ride to a stranger ever again. The film is about a young man who escapes a deadly hitchhiker (Rutger Hauer) only to be stalked by the madman and framed for his crimes.
Much like Unhinged, the movie draws fear from the idea of a chance encounter leading to someone being targeted by a relentless killer. Hauer makes for a chilling and underrated horror villain.
7 Cape Fear (1991)
While Travis Bickle might be the more famous role Robert De Niro and Martin Scorsese created together, Max Cady is arguably an even more disturbing villain character. In Cape Fear, he is a felon who is released from prison and begins tormenting the lawyer he blames for his incarceration.
Perhaps the most terrifying thing about characters like Cady or Crowe’s unnamed villain in Unhinged, is that they believe they are justified in the terrible things they do. Cady thinks he is an instrument of God and that his victims deserve the horror he inflicts on them.
6 One Hour Photo (2002)
While not nearly as violent or action-packed as Unhinged, One Hour Photo is another tense thriller about an obsessive and dangerous person. Robin Williams plays Sy, a quiet and lonely clerk at a photo development kiosk who forms an unhealthy obsession with a particular family through viewing their photos.
Sy is not the same intimidating killer we see in Unhinged, but his stalking nature does feel reminiscent. The film also looks at how such a threat can emerge from out of nowhere. One Hour Photo is an eerie movie with a rare villainous turn from Williams which is very effective.
5 The Gift (2015)
Joel Edgerton wrote, directed, and stars in The Gift, an underrated thriller worth seeking out. Jason Bateman and Rebecca Hall play a married couple who have a former acquaintance (Edgerton) re-enter their lives and bring up some dark secrets.
The film is another look at someone who is willing to go to disturbing lengths in order to achieve the revenge they think they are owed. The Gift is a fascinating and creepy tale of suburban life thrown upside down.
4 Falling Down (1993)
The main threat behind Crowe’s character in Unhinged is how someone can suddenly snap in a terrifying way. This is also at the center of the film Falling Down which features one of Michael Douglas’ best performances.
Douglas plays a mild-mannered professional man who, after getting caught in a traffic jam, abandons his car and begins lashing out violently against all the annoyances of society around him. The film is a compelling, sometimes darkly comedic look at a man losing control.
3 Changing Lanes (2002)
Much like in Unhinged, Changing Lanes tells the story of how a simple traffic encounter spirals out of control. Ben Affleck and Samuel L. Jackson play two men who have a minor collision on the way to important meetings. The fallout of their interaction leads them to take increasingly drastic measures of revenge on each other.
It is a similar story about how meeting the wrong person on the road can escalate out of control. Jackson is great as a beleaguered family man while Affleck really shines as a generally unlikable character.
2 Duel (1971)
Even before Steven Spielberg became the king of the summer blockbuster with Jaws, he delivered this hugely entertaining thriller. Duel follows a man on a road trip who encounters a deranged trucker who begins chasing him for seemingly no reason.
Much like the shark in Jaws, Spielberg delivers a terrifying villain by keeping him in the shadows. The driver is never seen in the film and yet the monstrous truck barreling down the road is as scary as any masked killer.
1 Joy Ride (2001)
The underrated Joy Ride takes a lot of inspiration from Duel, including the unseen trucker driver villain. The film stars Paul Walker and Steve Zahn as brothers on a road trip who play a prank on a trucker over the CB radio, making themselves unwitting targets.
The villainous Rusty Nails (voiced perfectly by Ted Levine) is a chilling threat. Joy Ride is yet another effective and entertaining thriller that looks at how something so simple like a practical joke can unleash the vengeance of a madman.
