10 The Swords Of Justice
The Swords of Justice takes inspiration from Alexandre Dumas’ novel The Three Musketeers, with each Pokémon in the quarter representing one of the knights. Years before the Generation V games, the trio of Cobalion, Terrakion, and Virizion witnessed the burning of a forest as a direct result of a human war. The three protected the Pokémon but couldn’t save the forest. Finding an orphaned Pokémon, Keldeo, they adopted it into the group, becoming the modern iteration of Swords.
Within the Pokémon world, the Swords act as protectors of other mons, challenging humans who pretend to steal their environment. It’s this purpose that makes them stand out among all other Legendaries. The Swords are the Pokémon equivalents of superheroes, protectors of the vulnerable fighting against human greed. They are heroes who always stand up for what’s right, chevaliers in every sense of the word.
9 Lugia & Ho-Oh
Lugia and Ho-Oh take inspiration from the legends of the Ryujin and the Phoenix, respectively. Considered as polar opposites, they are Johto’s most emblematic Pokémon. Legend has it, they lived in one of the best places in the Pokémon world, Ecruteak City, atop the Brass and Bell Towers. After lightning struck and burned down the Brass Tower, the duo separated.
Ho-Oh is the guardian of the skies, associated with the sun and rainbows. On the contrary, Lugia is the protector of the seas, the living representation of the storm. Still, they manage to co-exist peacefully despite their differences, and that’s what sets them apart. They are the balance necessary for the world to function, perfect representations of the contradictions that make up the universe.
8 The Guardian Deities
Based on Hawaii, the Alola region marked a clear departure for the franchise. Each of the four islands in Alola has a guardian in charge of protecting it. Melemele has Tapu Koko, Akala has Tapu Lele, Ula’ula has Tapu Bulu, and Poni Island has Tapu Fini.
What makes these Legendaries stand out is the maturity they display. They once fought each other, wreaking havoc across the region. Witnessing the destruction, they felt shame and decided to make peace, assuming protection for the islands. However, they still practice friendly sparring, occasionally facing against each other to see who’s stronger. All Deities take inspiration in totems for their design, while their coloring corresponds to their respective island. For example, Tapu Koko’s color scheme is yellow, and “Melemele” is Hawaiian for yellow.
7 Eternatus
Sword & Shield are nowhere near being the best games in the Pokémon franchise. However, their main Pokémon antagonist, the mighty Eternatus, is one of the best Legendaries in existence. Inspired by the legend of Arthur Pendragon, who adopted a draconic symbol after witnessing a dragon-shaped comet, Eternatus is one of the few Pokémon that come from outer space.
According to Galarian myth, Eternatus crash-landed on Earth around 20,000 years before the games. Eternatus is the source for the Dynamax phenomena in Galar, making it indirectly responsible for the region’s current supremacy. Beyond its importance to the Pokémon world, Eternatus is the living proof that Pokémon exist in outer space, introducing new and exciting possibilities for the venerable franchise.
6 The Legendary Titans
Hoenn’s Legendary Titans take inspiration from the golems of Hebrew Legend. The most famous version of the legend involves Judah Loew ben Bezalel, a 16th-century rabbi from Prague who created the golem from clay to defend the city from anti-semitic attacks. In Pokémon, Arceus created Regigas, who pulled the continents into place using a rope. It then gave life to the titans–Regirock, Registeel, and Regice–using piles of rock, ice, and magma.
Their power was so vast that humans locked them all, leaving a braille inscription as the only clue to awaken them. Even in modern times, the inhabitants of the Hoenn region speak about them with apprehension. The Titans live up to their names. Like the best creatures of myth and legend, they inspire both fear and awe, and that’s why fans keep coming back to them.
5 The Legendary Beasts
The Beasts have arguably the most compelling backstory out of any Legendary in the franchise. Raikou, Entei, and Suicune were originally three Pokémon who perished in the fire that destroyed Ecruteak’s Brass Tower. Ho-Oh brought them back to life, with each one symbolizing one of the elements of the event. Raikou stands for the lightning that struck the tower, Entei represents the fire that burned it down, and Suicune embodies the rain that ended the chaos.
A popular fan theory suggests that the Beasts were the first three Eevolutions, Vaporeon, Jolteon, and Flareon. Even though this claim remains unconfirmed, it still adds an extra layer of mysticism to this mighty trio. The Legendary Beasts lore is so fascinating that it could make for a worthy entry in the Pokémon Legends series.
4 The Super-Ancient Pokémon
Also known by fans as the Weather Trio, the Super-Ancient Pokémon are the creators of the physical world. Each one represents a layer of the Earth: Rayquaza embodies the atmosphere, Groudon the Lithosphere, and Kyurem the hydrosphere. The latter two are sworn enemies and engage in a fierce clash that can potentially destroy the world. As the Trio Master, Rayquaza is the only one who can stop them.
Hoenn legends recognize their importance for the world as a whole. Indeed, these Pokémon are arguably the most powerful of all Legendaries, their strength so primal and raw that it has no comparison. Their lore only adds even more appeal to their narrative, cementing their place as idols of both humans and Pokémon.
3 Necrozma
Necrozma is, perhaps, the most challenging boss battle in any Pokémon game. This being comes from Ultra Space and needs light to survive, stealing it from others if necessary. Necrozma takes inspiration from physics concepts like black holes, neutron stars, and light refraction.
What makes this Pokémon so fascinating is its reputation as a villain. It rules over Ultra Megalopolis, where it is known as “the Blinding One.” Necrozma could bestow light on others in ancient times but lost the ability after battling the Ultra Recon Squad. The encounter left it injured, and fragments of its body traveled across dimensions, arriving at the Pokémon world and becoming Alola’s Z-Crystals. Necrozma is a blatantly violent Pokémon, living in constant pain because of its incomplete state and the lack of light in Ultra Space.
2 The Tao Trio
The Legend of the original Unova Dragon is one of the most popular in the franchise. It tells of two brothers; one stood for ideals and the other for truth. Their differences led to their mutual Pokémon, an unnamed dragon, to split into two. Reshiram and Zekrom each sided with one brother, standing up for truth and ideals, respectively. Many fans believe that the Unova Dragon should be the next entry in Pokémon Legends. Indeed, the story is sufficiently compelling to support an entire game and could answer some of the lingering questions.
The third member of the trio, Kyurem, has an origin of its own. Unovans believe it came from outer space and fear it because of an old legend that portrayed it as a man-eating monster. The Tao Trio takes inspiration from Chinese philosophy: Reshiram represents the yang, Zekrom the yin, and Kyurem the wuji, or the absence of yin or yang.
1 The Creation Trio
Dialga, Palkia, and Giratina are the closest thing the franchise has to Pokémon Gods. Each member of the Creation Trio presides over a dimension. Palkia and Dialga control space and time, respectively. For its part, Giratina represents antimatter and rules over the Distortion World, where the laws of physics don’t apply.
These mighty dragons created the flow of the universe. They predate every Pokémon except for Arceus, making them vital for the very existence of the Pokémon world. It’s impossible to understate their importance; the Creation Trio is the very definition of legend. They are myth come to life, the perfect marriage of fantasy and reality. Fans hope the franchise will further explore their lore in the upcoming Gen IV remakes, Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl.
