10 Locations From The Uncharted Series We Want To See In The Movie

Little is known about the forthcoming Uncharted movie adaptation, but we know the film’s use of locations will either make or break the project.

When it comes to the Uncharted video game series, the surroundings and locations are almost as important as the characters—if not more so—which is why it’s one of the games to play if you like Indiana Jones. The globetrotting aspects of the games are part of why they’ve all garnered such a warm reception, even from people who aren’t necessarily gamers.

With the film adaptation being one of the movies that barely escaped development hell, there’s still very little we know about the movie. However, based on the on-set photos that have been revealed so far, it looks like it’s shaping up to be a similarly globe-trotting affair. The big question is regarding which locations Drake and Sully will be traveling to. Based on the locations seen in the games, here are ten of the very best options.

10 The Himalayas

With the giant set piece of Uncharted 2: Among Thieves being the train crashing in the Tibetan Himalayas, Drake takes rest in a beautiful Tibetan village, and it’s one of the levels that is the most detailed in the game.

Though it’s impossible to run in the chapter, there are still a lot of hidden areas to explore when walking through the village. It also leads to climbing the Himalayan mountains, which has some major ramifications to the finale of the game. Then, resting up in the Tibetan village results in a huge gunfight between Zoran Lazaravec’s army, and complete mayhem ensues.

9 London

Drake is easily one of the best PlayStation protagonists, but he has a great crew of treasure hunters and thieves that help him out in tougher situations, and one of those very characters is the cockney meathead Charlie Cutter.

Charlie has unfortunately only ever appeared in one of the games, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, but his entrance in the London pub all the way through to the deactivated subway tunnels might be the best intro to any of the Uncharted games. If the movie took Drake and Sully to London, it’d be the perfect way for the film to introduce Charlie, and London makes a nice change to the rough terrain drake usually tackles.

8 Panama

The cast of the upcoming Uncharted movie, which includes Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg, is one of the ways the film could be a success, but a lot of the film’s box office performance will definitely be based on how faithful it is to the game series too.

As the first Uncharted game is largely based on one island, it might be the most cohesive and logical game in the series. Based just off the coast of Panama, Drake spends 30% of the game trying to save Elena in a castle, and it’d be great to see this in a movie, almost like a reverse prison break-type plot.

7 Cartagena

Being easily one of the best levels in the series, the chapter taking place in the Colombian town sees players take control of a much younger Drake when he was just 16 years old. It’s almost like a small origins story, as it chronicles the way Drake and Sully first met, which is when they’re unsurprisingly trying to steal the same relic.

The movie’s take on Drake is already much younger than the game version, but the movie could definitely feature an even younger version in a flashback type scene, not to mention that Cartagena is an imperative part of Drake’s life.

6 Yemen

Though walking through the markets with all of these fascinating things going on, the Yemen levels are disappointingly not very interactive, as getting a chance to communicate with some of the locals would have done wonders for immersion. However, this is something that the game could rectify, as seeing Holland in the role of Drake having back and forths with the citizens would be interesting, and it leads to one of the best action sequences in the series.

5 Amazon Rainforest

With Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune being one of the very first games to show off the power of the PlayStation 3, the title’s Amazon Rainforest section had gamers flabbergasted. Though it might not look like much today, in 2007, the graphics were astonishing, and some of the gameplay that takes place in the location is the most memorable in the series.

From finding the German U-boat to exploring the series’ first of many abandoned temples, the movie owes it to the series to feature the rainforest. There’s no other location that’s more representative of the series, and, to somebody who has never played the games but knows what the franchise is, the Amazon Rainforest is more than likely what they picture.

4 Istanbul

We don’t get to see much of Istanbul, as there’s only one location that the game explores, which is the Istanbul Palace Museum. The area is unique for many reasons; firstly, it’s the first mission in the series that introduces stealth mechanics.

On top of that, it’s one of the most exciting moments in the game, and it makes for a pleasant change to running-and-gunning and endless climbing up walls and cliffs. It was great to see a little stealth in the game, let alone hiding in the fountains of the Palace Museum which sits above the rest of the city.

3 France

By the time Drake’s Deception came around, the third entry in the series, scavenging the forest seemed a little old-hat, as jungle type levels were almost the whole of Drake’s Fortune, and it took up a lot of Among Thieves, too. So, when Drake and Sully were dropped into the jungle again in the third game, it made even the biggest Uncharted fans groan.

However, this time, the densely-wooded area happened to be in France where the treasure hunters found a giant abandoned chateau, and it’s the most picturesque of all the forest levels in the series. The who place ended up in flames not long after the two protagonists step foot inside, but it made for some great views.

2 Madagascar

Madagascar is one of the locations in the series that is present throughout quite a few chapters. Appearing in Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, Madagascar is one of the most scenic locations in the game as Drake, Sully, and Sam work their way through the terrain to reach a castle. It’s the first time in the franchise where the game allows the player to freely explore a huge open area and take different routes, and it makes great use of the beautiful vistas.

One of the reasons why the level is so great, besides the exploration and the look of the area, is because it gives the characters a little breathing space, and there’s some major character development. It’d translate to the big-screen brilliantly, as seeing Holland and Wahlberg cruising through Madagascar having a heart to heart would exponentially exceed fans’ expectations.

1 Nepal

Like Madagascar, Nepal is another area in which the series spends a long time. Whether it’s jumping from collapsing building to collapsing building, digging through the ruined streets for treasure, or solving puzzles in the temple, Among Thieves uses Nepal as the centerpiece of the entire game.

Though some of these scenes could risk the Uncharted movie becoming one of the video game movies so bad they’re good, especially the gravity-defying rooftop jumps that would be better suited to Fast & Furious, there could just as easily be some amazing pay-offs.
