10 Low-Key Heroes In Outlander

Outlander is full of bravery but not every hero is dashing and glamorous. Some are just day-to-day people who go the extra mile to do what’s right.

A tale of love, bravery, and gallantry, Outlander has no dearth of heroes. Swashbuckling warriors, stubborn, powerful heroines, brave young women avenging themselves, and young men coming of age, the heroism of most of the lead characters is out for everyone to see.
However, heroism doesn’t lie only on the battlefield or in saving lives on a daily basis, although these are remarkable things to do. Sometimes, heroism lies in the strength of common men and women facing challenges in their everyday lives, in little things that require immense courage, and in taking charge of one’s own destiny. Some heroes keep their heads down, but are heroes all the same.
10 Mary Hawkins
When the fragile Mary Hawkins first met Claire in Paris, she was naive about basic things in life. But during the brief appearances that Mary made, her character showed a certain amount of growth before disappearing completely.
Mary became the unfortunate victim of a rape in Paris, plotted by the slimy Duke of Sandringham, one of the most hateful Outlander characters, and the Comte St. Germain. She survived the assault, which of course took strength of character. But it was when she took matters in her own hands and killed the man who had led the attack against her in the episode aptly named “Vengeance Is Mine” in season 2, that she truly became a hero.
9 Mother Hildegarde
Mother Hildegarde ran the hospital in Paris for poor men and women, which was then joined by Claire who couldn’t bear to sit at home all day doing nothing. The good nun was gentle and kind, but strong and determined as well.
Given the deplorable condition of France at the time, it would have taken steely nerves to keep working for the needy and the vulnerable often without the means to perform surgeries or help patients in pain. Mother Hildegarde was also shown to be someone who did exactly as her heart guided her without the fear of being reprimanded–it was she who baptized Claire’s stillborn daughter Faith even though that was against the law.
8 Master Raymond
Yet another low-key hero that fans might have forgotten but who played a crucial role in Outlander’s season 2 was Master Raymond. This intriguing little fellow had an apothecary in Paris which Claire often visited, and struck up a friendship with her that later saved Claire’s life.
In season 2, Claire was dangerously ill after losing her baby and practically on the verge of death. As she lay sick in the L’Hopital des Anges, Master Raymond sneaked in and miraculously healed her within minutes. The act was particularly brave since King Louis XV’s men were on the lookout for him and he could easily have made away without risking his life and safety. As it happened, Master Raymond was taken into captivity soon after by the King’s men, making his gesture towards Claire even more heroic.
7 Jocasta Cameron
Another low-key hero on the show was Jocasta Cameron. As the owner of the opulent River Run, Jocasta might seem more privileged than most others, but it would have taken courage, strength, and determination to maintain the status quo in a society dominated by men.
Jocasta is a survivor. It was revealed that she had lost her young daughter Morna in a shocking tragedy right after the Battle of Culloden. The incident had left her shattered, but she kept going burying her grief and turning her pain into power. As a woman who earned respect by her own wit, Jocasta is a fighter.
6 Rupert McKenzie
Fans of the series can never forget Rupert MacKenzie, one of the MacKenzie clansmen who fought as a comrade in arms with Jamie in the Battle of Culloden, and a friend and ally of Jamie and Claire from the latter’s first trip to 18th century Scotland.
Rupert was not shown to be the brightest of them all, being far more interested in getting wasted than in anything else. However, when it was time to take up arms, the big fellow never dithered. He was a follower of Dougal MacKenzie and a loyal soldier who never questioned his leader. Rupert was killed when the prisoners of war were captured by the Redcoats after Culloden, and he went to his death bravely.
5 Angus
If Rupert is remembered then so must be Angus. Best mate and comrade to Rupert, this little fellow was braver than he looked, and fans adored the pair who brought much comic relief to the otherwise emotionally laden drama.
Angus died tragically after heroically saving Rupert who had been gravely injured in the Battle of Prestonpans. Even as Rupert healed under Claire’s gentle care, Angus himself collapsed, as he had been unknowingly suffering from internal bleeding the entire time. Angus’s death shocked fans, but it came only after he had saved his friend’s life.
4 Jenny Fraser
The feisty Jenny Fraser has appeared only now and then in this fantasy romance, but every time she has proved herself to be one of the strongest female characters on Outlander.
Jenny might be of relatively short stature, but she is braver than many others on the show. From putting up a fight when the nightmarish Jonathan Randall had preyed on her, to accompanying Claire to look for Jamie when the latter was taken by the Redcoats in season 1, and for all intents and purposes, running the estate of Broch Tuarach with her husband in Jamie’s absence, Jenny is no doubt a hero in her own way.
3 Marsali
Marsali isn’t just Fergus’s wife, but a force of nature herself. She is sharp, quick-witted, and an empowered young woman who fiercely protects her own.
In season 5, Marsali administered a lethal injection to Lionel Brown, the disgusting man who had been responsible for Claire’s abduction and heinous gang rape. Although an impulsive act, the courage it must have taken to take the life of a man who had hurt someone she loved made Marsali a little hero.
2 Lord Grey
One of the most intelligent supporting characters on Outlander, Lord John Grey has been an instant fan favorite on the show. He is kind, compassionate, and smart, and his complex and layered relationship with Jamie has won hearts.
But Grey is as much a hero in his own right, albeit low profile. As a young boy, he stood up against Jamie and his men for Claire’s honor even though she was a complete stranger to him at the time. Later still, he was brave enough to stand up for Jamie, arranging for him to spend his parole with a respected family in Hellwater. Grey also, very chivalrously, offered his hand his marriage to Brianna Fraser who was pregnant and waiting for news of Roger MacKenzie at the time. But for Outlander fans, his heroism lies in the way he has led his life knowing that his feelings for Jamie would never come to fruition.
1 Frank Randall
Frank Randall is by far the most underrated hero in Outlander. As the third angle in Claire and Jamie’s epic romance, he isn’t necessarily loved by fans. But the very fact that he was faced with a challenge that few find themselves in proved that he was a strong man.
Despite his love for Claire not being reciprocated anymore, he continued to adore little Brianna whom he brought up as his own daughter, and he stayed in the unhappy marriage for years for her sake. Moreover, it transpired in season 4 that Frank had known about Claire returning to Jamie, and about her death in the 18th century from a newspaper obituary. It would have taken strength of character to accept the truth and know that he couldn’t save Claire after all. Of course, Outlander fans are polarized over how Frank got worse and worse in the marriage, but in his own quiet, taciturn way, Frank Randall was no less a hero.
