With so many different streaming services, there’s no better time to be alive for the sheer amount of quality content at viewers’ fingertips. When it comes to TV series created exclusively for streaming services, there’s as much effort, and in some cases, as much money gone into them as some theatrically released movies.

While some streaming services are playing catch up, there are others that have been creating exclusive content for years. The best original productions that were created by streaming services are full of crime thrillers and superhero properties, but it’s surprisingly MCU-free.

10 Peacock – The Capture (7.8)

Peacock is riding high as a streaming service, and that’s almost solely due to The Office and all of its bonus and deleted scenes being available on the platform. However, though even its subscribers might not know, Peacock does have some great exclusive content.

The best example of Peacock’s exclusive content and one that viewers love the most is The Capture. The exclusive series is a British crime drama that sees an investigator track down a former soldier who may be guilty of kidnapping. It’s a shockingly compelling cat-and-mouse thriller and there’s a second season in development.

9 HBO Max – Doom Patrol (7.9)

HBO is considered the gold standard of television drama and upholds the production value and the most consistent quality across all of its shows. But the same can’t exactly be said for the HBO Max exclusives, or at least not yet. As it stands, there’s seemingly a bit less effort put into the HBO Max originals, as there’s yet to be a The Sopranos, The Wire, or even Westworld caliber show.

The closest it gets is Doom Patrol, a superhero show based on the DC characters of the same name. It’s a fun series and for a DC property, it wasn’t afraid to get weird long before The Suicide Squad existed. And while it has a more than a respectable score on IMDb, it’s even more loved by critics, as season 3 has a perfect 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

8 Paramount+ – The Good Fight (8.3)

The Good Fight first premiered in 2017, long before the service changed its name to Paramount+ and was still called CBS All Access. It’s likely the best legal drama that isn’t Better Call Saul, and like the Breaking Bad spin-off, though courtroom drama tropes have been played out to death, The Good Fight is a unique one on the worn TV genre.

The show has enjoyed a lot of success and a great run so far. As it stands, it’s among the longest-running drama series created exclusively for a streaming service. The series is far from over too, as it has been renewed for season 6, and the quality is still as great as it was five seasons ago.

7 Hulu – The Handmaid’s Tale (8.4)

When season 1 was released back in 2017, The Handmaid’s Tale was the most talked-about new show of the year. And even with season 5 currently in development, it has amazingly managed to maintain that excitement and stay fresh.

The Handmaid’s Tale is set in a dystopian future where women are property of the state and thrown into child-bearing slavery. The show’s critical success and love amongst general viewers are helped by the countless plot twists fans didn’t see coming,

6 Starz – Ash Vs. The Evil Dead (8.4)

As subscribers and services are in the thick of the streaming wars, where every service is vying for potential customers’ subscription fees, Starz hasn’t taken any drastic steps to secure them. Where Apple, Netflix, and others are literally spending billions on creators and content, Starz seems worryingly cavalier about the whole thing. However, it does have one ace up its sleeve, which is Ash vs. the Evil Dead.

It’s hard to follow up a classic horror franchise from the ’80s. Many have tried and failed but Ash vs. the Evil Dead did something truly unique with the Evil Dead series, as it leans harder into the comedy aspect of the franchise and sees Bruce Campbell being his completely unfiltered self. As Campbell’s performance as Ash is one of the ways Evil Dead still holds up today, the show perfectly captures that original energy.

5 Showtime – Dexter (8.6)

Dexter wasn’t made exclusively for Showtime’s streaming service, but as all of the network’s shows are aired on TV and are available to stream, the crime drama still fits the bill.

Even despite its negatively received final season, Dexter has a massively high score on the movie and TV show database, which can only be a testament to how great the earlier seasons are. However, with the new series Dexter: New Blood being released weekly, there’s still a chance for the show to fix the problems of season 8.

4 Amazon Prime – The Boys (8.7)

With the superhero genre being the most popular right now, a subgenre is becoming increasingly popular that the two are starting to mesh into one. Superhero satires are getting bigger and bigger, whether it’s Deadpool or Shazam, but they’re even more popular in a serialized format.

TV shows like The Tick and Umbrella Academy are satirizing superhero movies in ingenious ways, but the forerunner of them all is The Boys, which seemingly has the MCU firmly in its crosshairs. The show follows a group of superheroes who are suspiciously similar to those belonging to Marvel and DC, and they’re owned by a money-hungry corporation rinsing them for everything they’re worth. And if anything, the series is at least worth putting on for Billy Butcher’s outrageous quotes.

3 AppleTV+ – Ted Lasso (8.8)

AppleTV+ is slowly becoming more and more of an essential streaming service for households, as they have some of the most gripping drama series currently running, such as The Morning Show and Truth Be Told. But though the service sunk its teeth into hard-hitting dramas, it was a simple comedy that has gotten people subscribing.

The platform hit a home run, or rather a hat trick, with the soccer-based sitcom Ted Lasso. The show follows an American football coach who is hired to coach a soccer team in the UK, and it’s a much-needed workplace comedy that has been missing from television for a while. It was such a success that a second season followed less than a year later, and season 2 is even better than season 1.

2 Disney+ – The Mandalorian (8.8)

It’s fairly ironic that The Mandalorian is the most beloved of everything in the Disney-era Star Wars canon. The series started as a boundary-pushing sci-fi movie from the ’70s that could only be seen on the biggest theatre screen possible, whereas The Mandalorian is a Disney+ exclusive, literally made for TV.

The show’s success was helped massively by some huge fan service moments, such as the finale of season 2 where none other than Luke Skywalker appeared. And the supreme cuteness of Baby Yoda, and the fact that it became a meme, turned even non-fans of Star Wars onto the show. On top of that, as each episode of The Mandalorian is helmed by different directors with vividly unique styles of filmmaking, it made each installment especially fascinating.

1 Netflix – Narcos (8.8)

Though Netflix’s batting average might be shockingly low when it comes to their original movies, their original series programming is in a league of its own. Orange Is the New Black, The Witcher, and Sex Education are all well written and no expense was spared when it came to production, as they all look incredible.

But the best of them all is Narcos, which is about Pablos Escobar’s cocaine empire and how he ran Medellin. It’s the most disturbing and haunting portrayal of Pablo Escobar yet, as the character in the show is genuinely more terrifying than any horror villain. And even when Narcos ended, another series called Narcos: Mexico followed, which is almost as good as the original series.
