10 MCU Characters That The Phase Four Movies & TV Shows Have Made Better

The current phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Phase Four, has been a unique one. Instead of building up to a big finale, Phase Four has the burden of following on from a big finale. So far, Phase Four has been largely dedicated to setting up the next generation of Avengers: Shang-Chi, Yelena’s Black Widow, Kate Bishop’s Hawkeye, etc.

But the movies and TV shows of Phase Four have also given a spotlight to previously neglected B-tier Avengers like Wanda Maximoff and Sam Wilson. The flexibility of the Disney+ streaming series has allowed Marvel’s creative powers to flesh out characters that were relegated to limited supporting roles on the big screen.

10 Wanda Maximoff

Before Jac Schaeffer came along to pen WandaVision, Marvel’s writers didn’t really know what to do with Wanda. Her characterization was initially pretty one-dimensional and she spent the majority of Civil War confined to the Avengers’ New York headquarters.

Schaeffer added some real depth to Wanda, exploring her grief and turning her into an antihero. She’s actually a straightforward villain until she finally accepts her reality and frees the residents of Westview from their sitcom-inspired prison.

9 Sam Wilson

Since his MCU debut, Sam Wilson has only had supporting roles on the sidelines of other characters’ movies. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finally gave him a spotlight and introduced fans to his life outside the winged suit, like his money troubles and his relationship with his sister and her kids.

At the end of the series, Sam becomes the new Captain America. He doesn’t just take the moniker after Steve offers it to him; he earns the title through hard work and heroism. Sam masters the shield in a compelling training montage and jets to New York to thwart the Flag-Smashers’ plan. Now, he’s reportedly getting his own solo movie.

8 Loki

Depending on where he is on the redemption scale, Loki is usually a villain or a supporting player in MCU narratives. In Phase Four, he finally took center stage in his own Disney+ series. He shares hilarious chemistry with Owen Wilson’s jet ski-loving TVA bureaucrat Mobius, and the show explores more of his superpowers than his past MCU appearances.

The mainline Loki isn’t the only Loki featured in the series. Head writer Michael Waldron also introduced fans to a bunch of variants of the trickster god: Kid Loki, Classic Loki, Alligator Loki, President Loki, etc. The season culminated in a shocking cliffhanger in which Loki is stranded in the wrong universe, so his MCU arc is far from over.

7 Natasha Romanoff

Natasha Romanoff finally got a solo movie about a decade too late in Phase Four. After her death in Endgame, the Black Widow movie gave Nat a bittersweet swansong slotted between Civil War and Infinity War.

Throughout the MCU, Nat’s personal life has been shrouded in secrecy. The movie finally filled in her backstory: she was raised in a “family” of Soviet spies planted in a U.S. suburb, a la The Americans.

6 Wong

In his previous MCU appearances, Wong has been relegated to the role of Doctor Strange’s sidekick. In Phase Four’s Shang-Chi movie, Wong finally got to break away and live his own life.

As it turns out, when he’s not hanging out with Strange, Wong gets up to some pretty exciting things, like fighting the Abomination in an underground fight club and recruiting heroes like Shang-Chi and Katy via portals.

5 Sharon Carter

In Captain America: Civil War, Emily VanCamp was introduced as Peggy Carter’s niece, Sharon, a fellow secret agent. But instead of getting in on the action, Sharon is just featured in an uncomfortable romantic subplot with her would-be uncle.

VanCamp was brought back in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and her character was significantly improved. Not only did she get in on the action; she’s also revealed to be the elusive “Power Broker.”

4 Vision

After being killed by Thanos in Infinity War, Vision was reintroduced as a sitcom dad in WandaVision. He still likes to wax poetic and ramble on with philosophical musings – a big problem with the character’s early appearances – but it’s a lot more compelling as he explores the meaning of human emotions.

Paul Bettany got to show off his impressive range, nailing both the deadpan comic line deliveries and the complex nuance of an android realizing he died and he’s been resurrected as a figment of his magical girlfriend’s imagination.

3 Clint Barton

Hawkeye has been regularly called the most useless Avenger for the past decade. His new solo series’ small-scale conflict is proving that he’s much more competent and badass than MCU fans believe. Clint has been reintroduced as a grizzled veteran superhero who’s uncomfortable with public praise and just wants to get home for Christmas.

When he’s facing an Avengers-level threat alongside Iron Man and Captain America, Hawkeye can often get lost in the fray. But when he’s taking on a bunch of goons from the Tracksuit Mafia in a street brawl, he’s John Wick with a bow and arrow.

2 Baron Zemo

With Sam and Bucky’s banter, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier positioned itself as a “buddy cop” story in the mold of Midnight Run. But this dynamic was hurt by the fact that Sam and Bucky aren’t all that different.

Bringing in a third buddy in the form of Baron Zemo, the cunning criminal mastermind who singlehandedly tore Earth’s Mightiest Heroes apart, finally introduced some conflict into the mix.

1 Trevor Slattery

The villain twist in Iron Man 3 was wildly controversial, because fans were excited to see Tony Stark finally face his arch-nemesis from the comics – the Mandarin – and he turned out to be a soccer hooligan actor named Trevor Slattery. Ben Kingsley’s performance in Iron Man 3 was funny enough, but the disappointment of the twist distracted from it.

In Shang-Chi, Trevor is reintroduced as a prisoner of the Ten Rings (the real Ten Rings) with a cuddly, winged, faceless mythical creature sidekick named Morris. This time, without a polarizing rug-pull getting in the way, Kingsley’s comic relief lands.
