When it comes to theatrical movie releases, 2020 continues to be a year of uncertainty. Several high-profile movies have been continuously delayed, pushed back, re-dated, and shuffled around as theater owners try and figure out a way to safely exhibit movies amid a global pandemic. Not only have mega-spectacle blockbusters such as Christopher Nolan’s Tenet been delayed, but so too have a spate of highly-anticipated horror movies.

Such high-profile horror titles as A Quiet Place Part II, Spiral, Antlers, Halloween Kills, and more been bumped back to 2021, there are still a double handful of worthy genre movies to look forward to between the months of September and November. 10 I’m Thinking Of Ending Things (September 4th)

September is poised to kick off with the latest from the mind of Charlie Kaufman, often hailed as the most original voice of his generation. His new film, adapted from the Ian Reid book, stars Jessie Buckley, Toni Collette, Jesse Plemons, and David Thewlis.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things follows an aggrieved young lady (Buckley) who travels with her longterm boyfriend to visit his parents in a rural farmhouse. Once they arrive, the woman slowly realizes that everything she’s ever known about her boyfriend has likely been a ruse.

9 The Devil All The Time (September 16th)

Spider-Man star Tom Holland and Robert Pattinson join forces in the Netflix original The Devil All the Time, which is poised to drop on the streamer September 16th.

Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Antonio Campos, the film takes place in the rural areas of Ohio and West Virginia in a story spanning from the ’40s to ’60s. The multi-narrative strands revolve around various troubled characters, including a PTSD-ridden war vet, a married serial-killer couple, and an outlaw preacher running from the law with his debilitated sidekick.

8 Antebellum (September 18th)

After more than a year of pushbacks and constant delays, Lionsgate’s southern chiller Antebellum is finally poised to be released online and VOD on September 18th.

Starring Janelle Monae, Eric Lange, and Jena Malone, the film centers on successful author Veronica Henley (Janelle Monáe) finds herself trapped in a horrifying reality that forces her to confront the past, present and future – before it’s too late.

7 Let’s Scare Julie (October 2nd)

Written and directed by Judd Cremata, Let’s Scare Julie traces a gaggle of mean teenage girls who set out to frighten their shut-in neighbor by conducting a series of mortifying pranks. However, when some of the girls fail to return home from the pranks they play next door, humor turns to horror in a flash.

The film marks Cremata’s feature film debut after two decades spent directing documentary television series. Also known as Let’s Scare Jessica To Death, the film stars Troy Leigh-Anne Johnson, Isabel May, Odessa A’Zion, Brooke Sorensen, Jessica Sarah Flaum, and Dakota Baccelli.

6 Death Of Me (October 2nd)

Eight months after surviving Fantasy Island, Maggie Q is set to star in Death of Me, the newest horror outing from longtime Saw-director Darren Lynn Bousman.

Death of Me is a found-footage film in which hung-over couple Christine (Q) and Neil (Luke Hemsworth) awake in Thailand with no memory of the night before. Neil’s video camera holds footage that appears to depict him murdering Christine, prompting a race for answers as an impending typhoon closes in. Bousman also helmed Spiral, the ninth installment of the Saw franchise due in May of 2021.

5 Nocturne (October 13th)

Due via Amazon on October 13th, Nocturne is the feature film debut of writer/director Zu Quirke. The low-budget indie affair from Blumhouse Productions stars Madison Iseman and Sydney Sweeney as a pair of highly competitive sisters willing to do anything for a leg up.

Set at a prestigious musical academy, the story follows the unthinkable lengths one young lady is willing to go to supplant her older sister as the top-ranked piano prodigy.

4 Candyman (October 16th)

Jordan Peele produces this affectionate redo of the classic 1992 horror yarn Candyman, and it’s finally poised to terrorize audiences this upcoming October. Directed by Nia DaCosta, the new Candyman returns to the location of the original (the Cabrini-Green projects), where the city of Chicago is now highly gentrified.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II stars as Anthony McCoy, the baby who was once kidnapped by the Candyman — a vengeful, hook-handed spirit of a lynching victim who’s summoned by saying his name five times in front of a mirror — nearly thirty years ago. Anthony returns to the projects only to discover that Candyman may be on the verge of coming back, and he’s somehow connected to it.

3 Bad Hair (October 23rd)

Due via Hulu a week before Halloween, Bad Hair is a horror-comedy written and directed by Justin Simien. Set in 1989, the film follows Anna Bludso (Elle Lorraine), an aspiring music-television VJ whose physical makeover may come at a deadly cost.

To impress her potential employers during a job interview, Anna gets a new weave hairdo. However, it soon becomes clear that her hair extension has an evil streak of its own when bursts of violence follow suit. Lena Waithe, Jay Pharoah, Vanessa Williams, and Kelly Rowland costar.

2 Saint Maud (October 23rd – UK)

The newest prestige horror yarn from A24, Saint Maud, is finally set to bless the masses when it hits UK theaters on October 23rd.

Written and directed by Rose Glass in her feature film debut, the religious chiller focuses on Maud (Morfydd Clark), a highly pious orderly who goes to terrifying lengths to pray the illness away from a terminal cancer patient. The sicker her patient becomes the more dogmatic she becomes, leading to a severe test of faith and a mortifying manifestation of evil.

1 Come Play (October 30th)

Due just in time for this year’s Halloween is Come Play, the sophomore effort from writer/director Jacob Chase adapted from his 2017 short film of the same name.

The film tracks Oliver (Azhy Robertson), a shy and lonely young boy who seeks friendly solace in the form of his smartphone and tablet. But when a zany monster named Larry begins to pop out of the screen into reality, Oliver’s parents must find a way to protect the boy before it’s too late.
