The best thing about her character is that she can think for herself and make rational decisions; she can defend herself, while also being a kind-hearted person. She is a badass princess in the true sense of the term.

8 Jo Kang Ja – Angry Mom (Korean)

Living up to the title, Jo Kang Ja is simply an angry mom. In her days, she used to be a notorious delinquent, now as a concerned mother, she enrolls in the same school as her daughter to investigate and protect her child from bullies. Initially, this strange decision puts her at clashes with her daughter, who feels ashamed of her mother’s overbearing love for her. But gradually, they develop a mutual respect and understanding.

The drama does a great work in examining several issues that school children face and Kang Ja’s character highlights special moments between a parent and their child. Her determination to stop at nothing when it comes to protecting her daughter is heartwarming to watch. Overall, she is a feisty mother with a kind and caring temperament.

7 Princess Wei Young – Princess Wei Young (Chinese)

Resourceful and brave, Princess Wei Young knows how to use her charm and beauty as weapons. But she is not just beautiful, she is extremely intelligent. 6 Kumiko Yamaguchi – Gokusen (Japanese)

The granddaughter of a yakuza clan, Kumiko Yamaguchi wants to lead her life on her own terms. She wants to be a school teacher and when she achieves her dream job, she makes it her responsibility to ensure the safety of each of her students. Outwardly stern and rigid, she is, in reality, a passionate teacher who is genuinely concerned about the physical and psychological well-being of her students, including the defaulters in her class.

Often compared to the classic drama series, Great Teacher Onizuka-Kun, Gokusen stands in its own rights and focuses more on the female perspective as a similar role model. Her uncommon upbringing gives her a different outlook on life, which in turn, helps her to reach out to her students in unconventional ways.

Realizing that one of her students is being abused at home, Kang Soo Jin kidnaps the child on an impulse and tries to adopt her. She is a temporary school teacher and yet she is willing to take this dangerous route in order to protect Hye Na.

This drama deals with emotionally complex issues involving neglect and child abuse. Soo Jin’s character is nuanced and built in such a way that the performance keeps the audience glued to the screen. Devastatingly beautiful, this show sensitively tackles different aspects of motherhood.

1 Balsa – Moribito: Guardian Of The Spirit (Japanese)

Adapted from a series of novels into anime and later into live-action, undoubtedly this drama has a popular storyline. Balsa is originally a wandering warrior who had vowed to lead a life of repentance for those she had killed in the past by saving as many lives as possible. Everything changes when she saves Prince Chagum and becomes his bodyguard, who is on the run from assassins hired by his own father.

During their perilous journey, Balsa discovers a mysterious connection between the Prince and a legendary water spirit, which gives him the potential power to destroy the whole kingdom. Despite the obvious dangers associated with the present task, Balsa sticks to her word and continues to fearlessly protect the Prince.
