The sci-fi genre is already home to plenty of strange concepts, many of which seem like they should have never been allowed to make it to screen. The creative freedom that the video game medium allows to studios means that anything could be included within their digital experience.

Over the years the sci-fi genre has led to bizarre weapons being created, many of which appear to have been included for comedic purposes. That’s not always the case though, with some overpowered pieces of equipment also looking totally strange in nature. Regardless, these weapons are always a lot of fun to play around with.

10 The Tuna Sword – Phantasy Star Online II (2012)

The exciting and immersive online action RPG from SEGA and Online R&D has continued to thrill its legions of fans with energetic gameplay and fun sci-fi stories. Out of all of the weapons in a player’s arsenal though, the Tuna Sword might just be one of the wackiest.

Whether it’s an intergalactic fish is unclear, but players are able to pick up the huge Tuna and hit opponents with it, to great success. Sure it might not be quite as powerful as some of the more traditional weapons, but the opposition definitely wouldn’t be expecting it.

9 The Hand Cannon – Dead Space 2 (2011)

Visceral Games and Electronic Arts helped to create a much-loved sci-fi sequel for the Dead Space series. However, a controversial choice at the time was the decision to make one of the most powerful weapons in the game a foam hand. This certainly wasn’t what players expected.

Players could only access the incredibly lethal Hand Cannon by completing all of Dead Space 2 on Hard Core Mode. Yet, the gun didn’t really look intimidating, instead coming in the form of an oversized gimmick usually found at sports matches. A bonus for this weapon is that the protagonist would shout ‘bang’ every time it was in use! Regardless of the reception, there could still be a place for the joke in the remake of the Dead Space franchise.

8 The Cluckshot – Gears Of War 3 (2011)

It’s a weapon that has been seen in Gears Of War 3, 4, and 5, Epic Games and Microsoft Studios channeled their inner Dead Space in the creation of the Cluckshot. The name itself is completely ridiculous but its design and its uses are even more bizarre.

The weapon can be found at various points of these games and is usually a hidden easter egg for players to discover. The chicken-shaped launcher drops a variety of these guns but they don’t fire bullets or grenades like a conventional weapon in the genre might. Instead, it arms the player with flying poultry!

7 Land Shark Gun – Armed And Dangerous (2003)

Taking a break from the tradition of making great Star Wars titles, Planet Moon Studios, Activision, and LucasArts created a truly bizarre video game with Armed And Dangerous. The retro title was part sci-fi, part fantasy, as it combines knights of the realm, strange alien creatures, and third-person shooter mechanics.

Among the weapons at the disposal of the player, though, was the shark-shaped Land Shark Gun. The weapon fired out a terrifying great white which would swim through the dirt until it rose from beneath the ground and ate an enemy whole! It definitely seems more effective than a traditional gun.

6 The Quacker – Crackdown 2 (2010)

Crackdown 2 might not be one of the most famous titles out there, but this Ruffian Games and Microsoft Game Studios title boasts some interesting gameplay design. The wacky action-adventure is set in an open world and features a lot of arena-style combat.

In a game like this, a player is going to need a grenade-type device to throw at the enemy. Luckily the easter egg weapon known as the Quacker has players covered, with this explosive gadget coming in the form of a yellow rubber duck! What’s even better is that not only is it immensely powerful but it will also quack when it is deployed.

5 Mutated Milk – Team Fortress 2 (2007)

Valve’s Team Fortress 2 might not be a straight sci-fi title, but the battle arena gameplay uses heightened realism and science fiction elements to make the combat engaging and exciting. There’s certainly nothing regular about blaster guns being brought into the fray. It’s the Mutated Milk that serves as the strangest weapon, though.

The weapon is a piece of bread that sits in a jar of milk, seemingly alive after being left far past its expiration date. When the jar is thrown it smashes on the ground or on the enemy, allowing the bread to escape and attack anyone close! It’s a weapon that can help players get out of tight situations, even if the end result is a little grotesque.

4 Grooviton – Ratchet And Clank (2016)

Although it also appeared in games like Tools Of Destruction in 2007, Insomniac’s take on the Grooviton showcased just how silly the weapon could really be. This science-fiction gadget had a very useful side-effect that players could take advantage of in battle.

By using this specialized glove a disco ball is launched into the air. The enemies in its path have no choice but to dance in a ridiculous moment seemingly influenced by the ’80s. There’s even a trophy in the game for players who manage to get all major bosses to dance!

3 The Dubstep Gun – Saints Row IV (2013)

Volition and Deep Silver definitely didn’t hold back in their creation of Saints Row IV, an installment to the franchise that continued to push the boundaries of what the studios could get away with. Among the strange gadgets and gizmos and ridiculous weapons is The Dubstep Gun.

Ratchet And Clank might be jealous of this phenomenal creation, as the gun blasts out unrelenting dubstep, causing chaos in its wake. The cars and people alike will start moving to the rhythm, while electronic strikes seem to fire from the end of the blaster. It’s a visual spectacle unlike any other. The Plunger Gun and Armed And Dangerous inspired Shark-O-Matic deserve a mention though.

2 Mr. Toots – Red Faction: Armageddon (2011)

Volition Publisher, THQ, and Syfy Games teamed up to create Red Faction: Armageddon a fun third-person shooter that really threw the player into the deep end when it came to action-packed sequences, despite stripping the series of its open-world format. The gritty title definitely featured one weapon that stood out amongst the rest though.

In fantasy and sci-fi, unicorns are known for contributing to wand production or transporting the protagonist to a mystical far-off land. They are not known for firing rainbow blasts from one end. Yet, this oddly designed weapon is perhaps one of the most significant in the whole title!

1 Everything – Alice: Madness Returns (2011)

Spicy Horse and Electronic Arts created a truly strange take on Alice In Wonderland, combining both fantasy and sci-fi elements in order to form a third-person shooter unlike anything else on the market. For such a fantastical world, Alice needed bizarre weapons to survive.

A pepper grinder that shoots bullets, an umbrella that can blast out missiles, and a hobby horse that acts like a razor-sharp, destructive ax are all at the player’s disposal. These themed tools definitely immerse audiences in the landscape but are amongst the strangest designs put to screen.
