These are 10 films that disturb and subvert the nature of an “ending” in their final scenes.
10 The Lighthouse (2019)
The film that writer/director Robert Eggers brought to the world in 2019 is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Mixing psychological horror, folklore of the sea, toilet humor, and a whole host of Greek mythology, The Lighthouse is an unpredictable thrill ride centering on the fight for sanity between two lighthouse tenders, played by Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson.
The surreal film culminates in a disorienting sequence wherein Pattinson’s character’s sanity completely breaks. The hypnotic techniques employed in this final scene are both overwhelming and unsettling, providing a truly unique film with a disturbingly unique ending.
9 Dancer In The Dark (2000)
Lars Von Trier is no stranger to making provocative films. One of his most infamous experiments in uncomfortable cinema is his 2000 collaboration with Bjork, Dancer in the Dark. A musical of-sorts, the film tells the story of a young, blind wannabe actress, as her luck goes from bad to worse.
However, the final scene featuring her wrongful execution is so emotionally distressing it can be hard to watch. Bjork’s powerful acapella delivery in the final seconds is heart-wrenching, which makes the sudden interruption of the hangman’s rope even more shocking.
8 The Wicker Man (1973)
One of the most legendary and terrifying of all horror films, The Wicker Man has gone on to inspire terrible remakes, even worse spiritual sequels, and a whole lineage of folk-horror films. The original’s power has not aged, however, and the final scene retains a strong sense of dread as the film’s protagonist is burned alive.
The imagery of the titular shrine slowly catching fire as the cult of Summerisle chants a springtime hymn is eerie beyond measure. Many films have tried to replicate its unnerving grip, but none have succeeded.
7 Kids (1995)
Larry Clark’s gritty opus about youth life in downtown New York City created a wave of controversy upon its release in 1995. The film’s commitment to realism can verge on unpleasant voyeurism at times, and the characters, by and large, are underdeveloped narcissists.
Clark, and writer Harmony Korine, bring the film’s loose narratives to a wholly unsettling end in the final moments when a character sexually assaults another character who has been diagnosed with HIV. Watching the scene play out is a sickening experience, one that remains hard to recommend.
6 Funny Games (1997 & 2007)
Finally, a film so messed up you can watch it in two different languages, with two different casts. Both versions of Michael Haneke’s horror-film-sort-of-satire end in the same understated nightmare.
After terrifying a vacationing family of four throughout the previous night, two overly-polite young men murder all but the mother. The final scene sees the two villains casually throwing the woman overboard before sailing to a different family’s house to presumably repeat the entire routine. A cruel and grueling end to a minor horror masterpiece.
5 Kill List (2011)
Kill List manages the difficult task of balancing a handful of tones without becoming inconsistent. What initially begins as a violent assassin drama morphs into a cult horror film with an ending so brutal, it’s hard not to look away.
As the main character, Jay, is forced into battling a hunchbacked member of the cult, the truth of the situation is revealed to the audience in a sickening manner that cements Kill List as one of the most depraved hidden gems in modern horror.
4 Se7en (1995)
One of the most influential crime movies of the 90s, David Fincher’s Se7en contains one of the most famous twists in film history. The climactic “What’s in the box?!” scene has been parodied endlessly since the release of the film, no doubt diminishing its shock value for first-time viewers.
Still, the scene remains a disturbing and gutsy ending to an already pitch-black story of murder and the personal nature of sin. Se7en stays a film whose legacy was established by its final scene and commitment to the darkest corners of its story.
3 Martyrs (2008)
One of the most notorious of the New French Extremity movement of films, Martyrs is a film that walks the fine line between torture-porn and art film. The film begins as a revenge drama before turning into a much darker meditation on the notion of martyrdom and physical pain.
The hyperviolence of the film, mixed with its lofty ruminations on the afterlife, make for a heavy viewing experience. In the final scene, the protagonist is flayed alive and given the chance to experience “true martyrdom.” It’s not only as disturbing as it sounds, it’s worse. Much worse.
2 The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (1989)
The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover is one hell-of-a-movie. It’s an NC-17 rated fever dream mixed with a romantic tragedy that concludes with one of the most outlandish and hard-to-stomach final scenes ever put to film. After her lover has been killed by her jealous husband, Helen Mirren’s Georgina has her lover’s corpse cooked and plated like a fine meal.
After an ensemble processional to the film’s otherworldly score, Georgina forces her husband to consume her lover’s flesh before she shoots him dead. It is an ending that is as poetic as it is upsetting.
1 Spoorloos (The Vanishing) (1988)
No doubt the most disturbing final scene in film history belongs to the original Dutch version of The Vanishing. Whilst the 1993 American remake ended happily, the original concludes the protagonist’s obsessive search for his girlfriend in a manner that is bleak and disturbing on a whole new level.
As the hero slowly wakes up to realize he has been buried alive in a tiny wooden box, there is no other reaction but to squirm and cringe as his fate is sealed. The nightmare film concludes with the perpetrator sitting in a garden amongst his children, having a lovely day. Yikes.
