10 The Duke of Burgundy (6.5)

Part surreal erotic nightmare, part chamber piece, and part masochistic love story, Peter Strickland’s The Duke of Burgundy is a singular work with a unique feel and atmosphere that bleeds coldly off the screen. A sexual tete-a-tete between two women, one who dominates from extreme scenarios of submission such as being locked in a small box overnight, the film steadily builds tension to an abstract and deeply weird conclusion.

Unfortunately, the film flew under many people’s radar when initially released. However, in the era of streaming services and new avenues for finding unseen gems, the film seems primed for cult status.

9 In the Realm of the Senses (6.6)

A film that is still banned in its home country of Japan, and In the Realm of the Senses is most certainly not for the squeamish. The twisted story of a young woman who endeavors into an unorthodox sexual affair with her master, the film is gorgeously shot, well-acted, and still-shocking in its most devilish moments.

Specifically, the climax is virtually unparalleled in its horrific power, having lost none of its original aplomb from 1976. The film’s original reception was such that the lead actress, Eiko Matsuda, abandoned her acting career and relocated to France.

8 Last Tango in Paris (7.0)

A film whose reputation has dwindled over the years after reports of lead actress Maria Schneider suffering unscripted abuse on-camera at the conspiratorial hands of Marlon Brando and director Bernardo Bertolucci, Last Tango in Paris is one of the most enduringly controversial films ever made.

Ostensibly a character study surrounding Brando’s American widower and Schneider’s much younger French woman, the film’s graphic sexual content is quite disturbing in nature on contemporary viewings. Audition is a film many consider to be a modern horror classic. What initially begins as an off-kilter drama about a widowed man auditioning women to be his lover turns into a sick and demented plunge into a feverish nightmare.

The film’s infamous “acupuncture” scene is truly hard to endure, skillfully blending stomach-churning visuals and pain best left to the imagination. Prolific director Takashi Miike has been behind numerous unforgettable cinematic terrors, though Audition remains his most popular and acclaimed work. A fascinating blend of body horror and dark romance.

6 Bitter Moon (7.2)

Yet another work from a troubling auteur, Roman Polanski’s underseen 1992 romantic thriller contains a truly amazing lead performance from frequent Ken Burns narrator Peter Coyote. Additionally, Hugh Grant stars as a rendition of his frequent dopey English charmer character present in his work in the 90s rom-com arena.

Bitter Moon is a much darker affair that centers on the bizarre and increasingly disturbing a romance between a wannabe writer and a French student. The film contains an unusually philosophical approach to love’s meaning that makes it a courageous engagement for all involved.

5 Dead Ringers (7.3)

David Cronenberg made his name in the realm of body horror. In 1988, he partnered up with master thespian Jeremy Irons to create this dark psychological erotic thriller about a set of identical twins, both practicing gynecologists, who begin to turn on each other after falling in love with the same woman.

Irons has rarely been more convincing than he is here, playing both brothers who often have to interact with each other in the same scene. The illusion is never broken, and the film’s slow pace builds into a warped climax that brings all that came before.

4 Leaving Las Vegas (7.5)

As beloved as the actor is in college dorms and online meme cultures, it’s unfortunate how often it is forgotten that Nicolas Cage is an Academy Award-winning actor capable of producing incredible on-screen emotion. His statue win came from his portrayal of a suicidal drunk who moves to Las Vegas and falls in love with an escort, played beautifully by Elizabeth Shue. The film’s committal to its pitch-black premise combined with the haunting jazz score and understated cinematography create an uncanny haze that lilts along until its inevitable conclusion. A melancholy masterpiece.

3 Little Children (7.5)

About as realistically dark as a film can get, Little Children comes from writer/director Todd Field. A series of interweaving vignettes about forbidden love, Little Children’s success relies on the combination of its fearless script and the seriousness by which the ensemble takes the material.

Jackie Earle-Haley particularly stands out as a convicted sexual predator seeking some kind of peace and whose fate becomes entangled with the adulterous affair between characters played by Kate Winslet and Patrick Wilson. Field’s film is a contemplative meditation on passions and ethical boundaries that is unusually mature for a Hollywood release.

2 The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover (7.6)

There wasn’t a film like it before it, and there hasn’t been a film like it since. Art house filmmaker Peter Greenaway’s highly abstract gothic erotic horrorshow deftly combines genuinely sensual sex scenes and brain-searing sequences of unnatural imagery. A piece of Avant-garde art as much as it is a narrative film, the experience of the film washes over the viewer, a somehow subtle and intense piece of filmmaking that challenges the audience as much as it rewards them. The film’s final third is particularly unforgettable and simply a stroke of warped genius.

1 Blue Velvet (7.8)

Blue Velvet is one of beloved oddball David Lynch’s most endearing classics. A noirish fairytale-esque film about a young amateur sleuth unraveling a bizarre and convoluted mystery that all begins with a severed ear. Shamelessly weird, drenched in left-field music choices, and featuring a whos-who of Lynchian troupe regulars, Blue Velvet’s core romance centers between the young sleuth and a seductive singer who is wrapped up in the shady business going on. Dennis Hopper’s antagonist remains one of Lynch’s most malicious and frightening. creations. The film is alternately funny, disturbing, incoherent, but always brilliant.
