Period pieces have always been big hits in Hollywood. Taking audiences back in time to a period that they have never experienced before showcases movie magic in all its glory. But there’s one element of these productions that are more immersive than most.
The costume design is one of the most important aspects of any historical drama. If the costumes are wrong they take the audience out of the film completely. Here are 10 of the best historically accurate costumes in movie history.
10 LES MISERABLES
The musical phenomenon has been running in the West End and Broadway for a number of years, so it wasn’t surprising when another movie production went into action to try to adapt this beloved play. However, the costumes were a big factor in this.
The stage productions have fantastic costume designs and so the movie iteration needed to top this. Luckily they drew heavily from the era of the French revolutions and managed to create a number of outfits that look like they were directly out of history.
9 DUNKIRK
Although this is still classified as a war film, it’s also a period piece as it’s set during a pivotal part of WWII. A number of different costumes had to be developed for this production; not just the army uniforms the soldiers are wearing.
Whether it’s medical staff, uniforms from different countries, the various ranks or even civilians during the final scene in the tiny town, there was plenty to work on here. Christopher Nolan is a stickler for detail though and made sure that everything was as accurate as possible.
8 DOWNTON ABBEY
The British franchise has long been one of the most respected period dramas on TV. However, fans were thrilled to learn that a movie version would be heading to cinemas across the world, with the same production value of the series.
The costumes of the show were always incredibly accurate, reflecting the early 1900s in England. They had to represent a certain class of people as well as the staff of the manor at the time. It’s a very impressive piece of work in any medium; the costumes are exquisite.

This is a film that has recently hit cinemas and has caught many people’s attention. It’s charming, funny and based on an excellent novel by Jane Austen. It’s one of the latest attempts to adapt to the work and it’s one of the most successful.
Part of this is due to the world that has been created. This feels like you’ve stepped back in time into an era of classiness and glamour. The set design is superb but the costumes, in particular, are truly astounding and have been thoroughly checked by experts.
6 THE GREAT GATSBY
The novel is so beloved that it would always be difficult to create a live-action adaptation. Unfortunately, the film itself wasn’t too well received with modern elements such as the music, ruining the overall aesthetic and tone.
However, the costumes of the piece really didn’t let the film down, with the period well represented. The particularly impressive moments come during the big parties where hundreds of accurate costumes have been produced and look amazing.
5 MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS
With an incredible cast including Margot Robbie, this award-winning film tried to portray the relationship between Mary Stuart and Queen Elizabeth 1st. As you can imagine, this kind of film required a lot of costume production.
The most wondrous part is, of course, the magnificent dresses designed especially for Elizabeth, which all had to reflect the royal fashion at the time. The staff and even peasants of the era were all outfitted with historically accurate clothing.
4 MACBETH
Shakespeare has had many different adaptations and this may be one of his plays that have been adapted the most. While some have tried to modernize this tragedy, the 2015 version of the film managed to set this in the correct era.
With Michael Fassbender as the titular character, this production didn’t hold back in its grit or it’s writing. Just looking at some of the still images alone, you can see the sheer attention to detail that went into creating such fantastic clothing.
3 MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA
A lot of this list has been very European based thus far so it’s important to look at various eras from around the world. This sensational Japanese tale is a powerful story and one that is enriched by the production that took place.
Set in the early 1900s, over a period of around 30 years, the fashion in Japan that’s represented in this film is both traditional and functional. The movie has been lauded for its unique sense of color and the designs have been created by industry experts.
2 BELLE
The 2013 film which is actually set in the early 1700s, tells an important story of race relations in a time of severe abuse and animosity for African Americans. In part, this film leads to the abolition of the slave trade act.
The costumes of the period are very glamorous, with the big dresses that the main character wears contributing to a lot of the workload. All of these outfits are so intricately put together and use techniques of the time period, making it the visual masterpiece that it is.
1 LITTLE WOMEN
This year this amazing film took home the Oscar for the best costume design and it’s easy to see why. The movie has drawn a lot of attention due to the brilliant cast assembled and of course because of the classic novel that it’s based on.
However, the costumes themselves would have been incredibly difficult to create, not to mention due to it being award season they had to be as historically accurate as possible to win the Academy Award. The team behind these incredible looks certainly achieved that.
