The survival film genre typically comes in two subcategories. There’s the first is the feel-good survival movie, and these often see the character(s) overcoming their tough situations with ingenuity, creativity, and a lot of perseverance. These movies are typically full of pathos, and they represent the resilience that can be found in human beings.
The other is the more tragic, maybe even more realistic, survival movie. These are often grittier and more horrifying in their approach, and they certainly don’t offer a feel-good happy ending. If anything, they prove that humanity often takes a back seat to the inherent dangers of nature.
10 Open Water (2003)
A truly horrifying film, Open Water concerns Susan Watkins and Daniel Kintner, a couple who is accidentally left behind on a SCUBA diving expedition. They are forced to contend with the open ocean, dehydration, starvation, and, ultimately, sharks.
The case is unfortunately based on the real-life story of Tom and Eileen Lonergan, and it ends in a similarly tragic manner; a gravely injured Daniel is eaten by sharks, and Susan commits suicide by drowning herself. It’s unclear what exactly happened to the Lonergans, but, as per Ranker, they have been presumed dead since 1998.
9 The Grey (2011)
Joe Carnahan’s The Grey stars Liam Neeson as John Ottway, one oil worker among many who are stranded in Alaska following a plane crash. The workers are forced to survive both the brutal wilderness, harsh cold, and roving packs of Canadian Grey Wolves that are looking to make dinner out of the desperate men.
All of the characters end up dead save for Ottway. The movie ends on an ambiguous note, with Ottway laying against the fatally injured alpha. While it’s never made explicitly clear, it’s more than likely that Ottway died either from injuries, the elements, or another pack of wolves.
8 Into The Wild (2007)
Detailing the life and final days of Christopher McCandless, Into the Wild is based on Jon Krakauer’s nonfiction book of the same name. McCandless is an ambitious if naïve young adult who decides to abandon civilization and explore the vast wilderness of Alaska. Unfortunately, he is ill-prepared for the adventure and eventually dies, though, as per Medium, the exact cause of his death is still up for debate.
The true story of McCandless is a tragic one indeed, and it serves as a stark reminder that nature is both brutal and unforgiving and that uninhabited expanses, while beautiful, are indifferent to human lives.
7 Buried (2010)
Featuring a forgotten Ryan Reynolds role, Buried is a tense psychological survival film concerning Paul Conroy, a man who finds himself buried inside a coffin in Iraq. All he has is a Zippo lighter, a pen, and his Blackberry.
The movie throws a cruel twist ending at the audience following 95 minutes of exhilarating action, and Paul suffocates to death as his coffin fills up with sand. Ending a survival movie with a death is harsh enough, but briefly kindling hope in the audience only to dash it away moments later is just savage.
6 The Descent (2005)
The Descent isn’t a typical survival movie, as it concerns human-eating monsters living inside a dark cave. But, it still contains many of the typical tropes associated with the genre, mixing supernatural scares with real spelunking dangers.
Unfortunately, no one survives the bloodthirsty monsters inside the cave. The Descent is quite unique, as it contains two endings—one that was released in the United States, and the other in the UK. Sarah lives and escapes the cave in the American release, although she’s clearly traumatized by the events. In the movie’s native UK, the American ending is revealed to be a hallucination, and a delirious Sarah is killed by the monsters.
5 On The Beach (1959)
A ’50s sci-fi movie that is still terrifying today, Stanley Kramer’s On the Beach takes place in a post-apocalyptic 1960s that has been devastated by nuclear war. The Northern Hemisphere is completely unlivable due to nuclear fallout, and the last of humanity live out their final days in Australia before the approaching fallout arrives.
The ending is a bleak affair, depicting the complete annihilation of the human race. It’s perhaps the only survival movie in which everyone dies.
4 The Perfect Storm (2000)
It’s always hard knowing that a survival movie was based on real events. Unfortunately, that’s the case with Wolfgang Petersen’s The Perfect Storm. The movie dramatizes the loss of the Andrea Gail, a small fishing vessel that was lost during the Perfect Storm of 1991, resulting in the loss of six crew members.
The ending depicts everyone going down with the ship once it’s capsized by a massive wave. The only survivor of the sinking is rookie Bobby Shatford, but he is left floating without a lifejacket and drowns off-screen.
3 The Last Descent (2016)
The Last Descent is a little-known survival film based on the demise of John Edward Jones, a medical student who gets lost and trapped while spelunking Utah’s Nutty Putty Cave. Jones got stuck upside down in a narrow passageway close to the exit and remained as such for the following 27 hours. A rescue was attempted, but it failed due to a broken pulley.
According to the Salt Lake Tribune, John passed away due to the unrelenting pressure on his heart and body, effects from being upside down for over 24 hours. Efforts were made to seal the cave, and John’s body remains interred inside.
2 Moon (2009)
Moon is a different sort of survival movie, one that takes place in space and contains clones. The story follows Sam Bell, an astronaut miner who suffers a bizarre crisis on the Moon. Sam eventually learns that he is actually a clone of the original Sam Bell and that his three-year contract is almost expired, which will result in his sickness and eventual death.
In the end, the old Sam sends a newer clone back to Earth to potentially meet his family and expose Lunar Industries’ illicit activities while he remains on the Moon and dies.
1 Aguirre, The Wrath Of God (1972)
Werner Herzog’s Aguirre, the Wrath of God concerns the expedition of Lope de Aguirre, a Spanish conquistador who foolishly led a team of men into the Amazon River in search of El Dorado. As the film depicts, the adventure does not go well.
Most of the conquistadors are attacked, kill each other, or slowly expire from starvation, and Aguirre is the last man standing. He is last seen declaring himself “The Wrath of God” to some monkeys that have boarded his drifting raft, and it’s insinuated that he will quickly follow his men in death.
