Instead, let’s have a look at some titles that outright betray the intent of the film, or have literally no relation to the content. There will also be films with titles that are simply so obscure, they stray from offering any expectations at all. It’s really fascinating to revisit such strange tales without proper names.
10 Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan
This is arguably the best example of just how obsolete the slasher genre was by the late eighties. Every possible transformation had been exhausted. Jason Voorhees had been revived by lightning, and battled a psychic teenager. He was four entries beyond the “final chapter”.
The only opportunity for creative kills—the main draw for fans—was to shake up the setting. Unfortunately, Jason spends most of his time on a boat. It’s a massive disappointment because the promise of Jason finally interacting with public crowds and a familiar setting sounds intriguing. Like removing King Kong from Skull Island and unleashing him upon the city. This is not comparable in any way.
9 The Squid And The Whale
Firstly, a disclaimer that this is a genuinely moving film. Two parents with marital issues ultimately cause highly dramatic issues for their children. And the performances are truly outstanding, filled with convincing sincerity.
However, at first glance the title promises some form of sea adventure, probably friendly and animated. Even thinking in metaphorical terms, it could suggest some sort of David and Goliath story. That is, unless the viewer is already familiar with the famous art exhibit. It regards two battling sea creatures, which distinctly references the feuding parents.
8 The Constant Gardener
Another title that simply can’t be omitted from any list like this, though seen often. The fact is that this film could involve any number of things with such a vague title. Taken literally, it could easily be a touching drama, likely an indie darling. Or possibly something quite boring.
Metaphorically, the story could feature any protagonist that routinely fixes some extensive mess. That could imply any reporter, someone in law enforcement, and so forth. Instead, the film’s hero takes on more responsibilities than ever after his wife is murdered, and stumbles into a vast conspiracy.
7 Straw Dogs
The iconic poster is definitely required to invoke any kind of sensible imagery. One might think it was an arthouse film, a drama about dogs themselves, or even about an artist. Expectations probably wouldn’t come to the conclusion that this is a Sam Peckinpah thriller.
The man is famous for his approach to violence, and this film is yet another classic example of Peckinpah’s attitude. Unrelenting and graphic, this thriller is still difficult to watch. Not in spite of its release in 1971, but perhaps due to that gritty era of filmmaking.
6 Reservoir Dogs
Another film that should probably be about dogs, because the title is allegedly derived from a customer misunderstanding French words. The word “reservoir” generally refers to a water supply, so pairing it with man’s best friend seems strange. Still, reservoir could also refer to an extensive supply of anything, but that would emphasize dogs as central to the film.
Ultimately, the only promise one can rely on regarding the film is previous knowledge that Quentin Tarantino directed it. That will always tell you exactly what to expect, since every film he’s directed carries a certain reputation.
5 Candyman
This is just waiting to scar children for life. This film should absolutely involve candy in some way, shape or form. The word innately invokes lightheartedness, rooted deeply in childhood. Then again, it could refer to someone running a candy store, a tender psychological drama. Both directions would be utterly incorrect.
The titular character is one of Tony Todd’s most iconic roles, a supernatural entity that appears the same way “Bloody Mary” does. But his mythology is deeply fascinating and sympathetic, and even the setting for the story is captivating.
4 The Accountant
Surely, most viewers could hardly imagine anything more dull than accounting. Finances always leave a bitter taste to begin with. Presumably, this would be an intimate drama. Reaching favorably, the film might involve some crime regarding cooked books. However, although the film does step into that, the protagonist is anything but expected.
The movie turns out to be a gripping action film with compelling fight sequences and shootouts. The main character has a rich childhood history that also explains his combat skills. It’s a highly inventive action-thriller, which directly opposes the titular promise of a glacial drama.
3 Brazil (1985)
Terry Gilliam is a remarkably imaginative director, and this dystopian masterpiece is yet another triumph. It’s a tremendously clever satire, that actually has absolutely nothing to do with the country in South America.
One would reasonably assume that Brazil might be a relevant setting, or even that a crucial character was named after the country. Instead, the title comes from a song, opposing every natural expectation. The fact that the film is so daring and whimsical only adds to the misleading nature of the title, a perfectly familiar place.
2 John Dies At The End
Alright, so at the very least this title suggests some sort of comedy. And it is certainly a very strange, quirky comedy. But viewers can hardly ignore the fact that—spoilers—the title is an outright lie.
John simply doesn’t die at the end, which is arguably the most misleading title imaginable. Still, despite the implications of humor, no one could predict another fantasy-horror film from famed director Don Coscarelli. His entire career is built on lovable cult films, and this one really pushes the boundaries of bizarre.
1 Naked Lunch
Taken literally, thoughts of outright eroticism should arise. Or, at the very least, this could be a straightforward comedic tale. However, even extending a lengthy olive branch to accept the implication of transparency, the actual content remains weird and contradictory.
A metaphor for clarity or enlightenment should hardly result in an exterminator who is subject to hallucinations that transform people into insects. Of course, this isn’t the first time that horror-master David Cronenberg has shown an interest in insects. Here, even the poster will leave you speechless regarding the actual story. There is simply no anticipating this outlandish cult classic.
