10 Most Painful Breakups In The Vampire Diaries
The Vampire Diaries featured so many romances throughout the series. While mostly everyone got their happy ending, these breakups hurt to watch.

The Vampire Diaries is known for its relationships throughout the series. Viewers rooted for couples to get together and for some to finally break up. The series did not shy away from heartbreaking scenes, especially when it came to the characters’ love lives.

When couples broke up, it was actually for good reasons. Either they weren’t good for one another, they put their loved ones in danger, or they simply just couldn’t work out their differences. Despite how much it made sense for these relationships to end when they did, it does not make the breakups any easier to watch for some fans.
10 Elena and Stefan (Season 2)
In season two, when Katherine comes to Mystic Falls, she sets her sights on Stefan. In her pursuit to get Stefan back, Katherine threatens Elena to leave him or she will take it out on those closes to her. After Elena and Stefan pretend to break up, they think they outsmarted Katherine. However, Katherine finds out and hurts Jenna in revenge.
This leads to a very tearful breakup between Stefan and Elena, and one that hurts viewers to watch regardless of who they wanted Elena to be with. They both know that they can’t be together because of Katherine, even though they both still love each other.
9 Damon and Elena (Season 3)
In the season three finale, Elena has to choose if she is going to see Stefan and the rest of her friends or Damon when they believe that they are going to die since they are all part of Klaus’ bloodline. Damon asks Elena if it was just between him and Stefan, who she would go to and she admits she would choose Stefan.
It is a sad scene to watch since Elena clearly cares about Damon but she doesn’t want to hurt him more by stringing him along while she is still in love with Stefan. After Katherine chose Stefan too, it is rough to watch Damon hear a woman he loves not choose him again.
8 Caroline and Tyler
Tyler and Caroline weren’t able to be together countless times while dating simply because Tyler had to be on the run from Klaus. When Klaus finally leaves Mystic Falls, Caroline is excited that Tyler can finally come back. However, he comes back to say goodbye since he plans on going on a revenge mission against Klaus.
Caroline begs Tyler to tell her that he loves her more than he hates Klaus, and Tyler admits that he can’t do that. It is so hard to watch after Caroline did so much for Tyler throughout the series and was excited for them to finally be together. To watch Tyler walk out and choose revenge over his love for Caroline was brutal for fans to see.
7 Jeremy and Anna
In season three, Jeremy has the ability to see the ghost of Anna after he is brought back from the dead. Even though he is dating Bonnie, Jeremy emotionally cheats on her with Anna. After Anna consistently begins to show up when he is with Bonnie, Jeremy has to tell Anna that he doesn’t want to see her anymore.
Jeremy confronts Anna and she tells him she only shows up when he is thinking of her. Jeremy finally tells Anna that he has to move on and decides to shut her out. It is really sad to see Anna pleading with him to not shut her out as he tells Bonnie what has been going on. Anna already has no one on the other side, so seeing her only connection to the living world disrupted did bring tears to a couple of fans’ eyes.
6 Katherine (As Elena) and Damon
In season five, Katherine possesses Elena and the first thing she does is break up with Damon. It is difficult to see since Elena was looking for Damon and ran into his arms moments before Katherine possessed her. Damon is trying to own up to his past mistakes and Katherine only cares about ruining Elena’s life.
Damon thinks that it is Elena breaking up with him and viewers can see how hurt he is. Fans were so crushed to see the couple break up and yet another obstacle put in their way of being happy.
5 Bonnie and Jeremy
At the end of the fifth season, Bonnie realizes she will disappear along with the other side as its anchor to the living world. In her last moments, she calls Jeremy and tells him that he needs to move on from her. She tells him that she loves him and hangs up.
When Jeremy starts running through the woods to find Bonnie, fans could feel how heartbroken he was. He just got Bonnie back and he has to lose her all over again. It is a heartwrenching scene since viewers can hear the pain in Jeremy’s voice as he screams Bonnie’s name while looking for her.
4 Stefan and Caroline
Stefan and Caroline had one of the best foundations for a relationship in the show. They knew each other for years and were friends. They also helped each other in their darkest times. It really struck fans in the eighth season, when Stefan and Caroline finally decided to be together to see them break up after Stefan’s deal with Cade.
Caroline is heartbroken to see Stefan so heartless and brutal and is hurt when Stefan tells her he is going to continue serving Cade longer than their agreed-upon year because he finds it fun. It hurt to see Caroline walk away from Stefan, but she had to take her children into the equation and knew she couldn’t be with Stefan while he was in such a dark place.
3 Damon and Elena (Season 5)
Elena feels betrayed that none of her friends, especially Damon, didn’t realize that Katherine was possessing her. They both admit that, at the end of the day, they aren’t good for one another. Although most fans knew this couple clearly had issues they needed to work on, it hurt fans to hear them both actually say they were bad for one another.
While the scene ends in them sleeping together, fans did have to face the harsh truth that Elena has to bend her morals in order to be with Damon. Damon also struggles with being a good person when Elena hurts him. Overall it is a breakup, that is extremely complicated but it definitely struck a chord with fans.
2 Caroline and Matt
When Matt finds out that Caroline is a vampire, fans were excited to see that he was willing to try and be with her despite it. When they ultimately break up, Matt is clearly in a lot of pain. He still loves and cares about Caroline but he couldn’t manage to be with her while she was a vampire and the danger that could come with that.
Caroline is one of the most well-adjusted new vampires in the show, so viewers could tell that all she wanted was that last sliver of her human life to stay intact. However, it just wasn’t meant to be
1 Stefan and Elena (Season 4)
Stefan and Elena were the original power couple on the show. Through Stefan losing his humanity, Elena facing death countless times, and them having to fight for their loved ones, they remained in love. That is why when they break up for good, it really impacted viewers.
After Elena has been exploring her feelings with Damon, she knows that she can’t be with Stefan anymore and Stefan can’t stand to sit by and watch her be in love with his brother. It is a mature breakup since both recognize that being together isn’t good for either of them, but it felt like an end of an era on the show with their relationship finally coming to an end.
