After the breakout success of the character Venom, Marvel’s Bullpen had little choice but to turn him into a heroic character to capitalize on his popularity. With an enormous symbiote-shaped void to fill, Carnage was created; a character so evil that there would never be any risk of having to convert him into a hero.
Defined by its propensity for violence, the Carnage Symbiote is a corrupting influence that few have had the will to combat. Since its introduction as the catalyst behind the very first Spider-Man and Venom team-up, the Carnage Symbiote has gone on to terrorize the Marvel Universe with a variety of hosts.
10 John Jameson
Son of award-winning Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson, John Jameson has chased adventure throughout his life. As a former Air Force officer and later astronaut, his work has brought him into the orbit of Marvel’s superpowered inhabitants on multiple occasions.
While working as head of security at The Ravencroft Institute For The Criminally Insane, John was in charge of monitoring the incarceration of Cletus Kasady, the original Carnage. During a complicated escape plot, the Carnage Symbiote briefly bonded to John and wreaked havoc upon the city, confounding the heroes who knew that Kasaday was securely locked up, as there had never been any other Carnage host prior to this. Due to the symbiote’s intense will, John’s entire personality was subdued during these events, and he had no recollection of his actions while in its possession.
9 Tanis Nieves
Amputee Tanis Nieves was a criminal psychiatrist who was treating a former symbiote host when she was offered the opportunity to replace her lost limb with an experimental prosthetic created from the remnants of the then-recently decommissioned Carnage Symbiote.
Unfortunately, when it was revealed that original host Cletus Kasady had survived the event that separated him from the symbiote (and left him literally ripped in half at the waist), the symbiote prosthetic rapidly corrupted Dr. Nieves and set about a rampage in pursuit of a reunion with its original host. Nieves was completely unprepared for the dangerous impulses of the symbiote and was even more horrified after it left her bonded to its offspring Scorn following their separation.
8 Karl Malus
Dr. Karl Malus is an expert geneticist with a history of imbuing superpowers upon those willing to pay for the abilities, which has amassed him a clientele of mostly criminals looking to empower their enforcers. When perennial Fantastic Four villain, The Wizard, decided to assemble an all-new iteration of The Frightful Four, Malus was recruited for membership, alongside a recently lobotomized Carnage, who was thought to be under Wizard’s control.
When the brain-dead Kasady, completely controlled by the symbiote, proved to be too difficult to manage, however, the alien was forcibly bonded to an unwilling Malus instead. As “The Superior Carnage” the symbiote-empowered Malus proved to be just as unpredictable as the original, turning against his allies in the midst of battle before the alien abandoned Malus and ate him alive after finding a new host.
7 The Wizard
Bentley Wittman was a child prodigy who became bored with the prospect of living a mundane life amongst the masses. To reconcile this, he set out to prove his genius by defeating Marvel’s smartest hero, Reed Richards, and The Fantastic Four. The mastermind behind most iterations of the Frightful Four, Wittman happened upon a brain-dead Cletus Kasady and arrogantly attempted to control the symbiote-enhanced villain as a member of his team.
When this didn’t work out as planned, he forcibly bonded the alien parasite to the recently recruited Karl Malus, but this too ended badly. As the symbiote was separated from Malus during a conflict with The Superior Spider-Man, it immediately sought out the next closest potential host, merging with The Wizard. As with most hosts of the Carnage Symbiote, Wittman struggled to control the creature’s impulses but was abandoned by it soon after when it determined he had fulfilled his usefulness.
6 Eddie Brock
Typically associated with symbiotes in his role as Venom, Eddie Brock was briefly bonded to the Carnage Symbiote against his will in the aftermath of Marvel Comics’ Absolute Carnage event.
Thinking that it was defeated after being absorbed into the Venom Symbiote he had recently reobtained, Brock was caught off guard when the indomitable will of Carnage overtook his original, attempting to coerce him into a swath of destruction. If not for Brock’s history with symbiotes, he may have succumbed to the alien’s maniacal ideas. Instead, he was able to reject the entity before it could fully consume his mind, abandoning it upon a desert island as he escaped its thrall.
5 A Great White Shark
Abandoned on a desert island, the Carnage Symbiote was desperate to return to civilization, to bond with another host, and exact its revenge upon those who had left it behind. To facilitate this goal, the alien creature was willing to merge with any potential host available, eventually attaching itself to a great white shark, which it would pilot back towards the familiarity of the mainland.
As a rare case of the alien symbiotes selecting unconventional earth hosts, the Carnage Shark was an absolutely terrifying idea. Although short-lived due to Venom’s increased influence upon the Symbiote species following the King In Black event, the Carnage-Shark was nevertheless a horrific symbol of the symbiotes’ underrepresented abilities.
4 Ben Reilly
First introduced as a clone of Peter Parker in 1973’s original Clone Saga, it would later come into question whether or not Ben Reilly may have been the original all along. Most known for his actions in the role of The Scarlet Spider, there was a time in which the true identity of Peter Parker was doubtful enough to facilitate Peter’s retirement.
During this era, Ben, believing he might be the “real” Spider-Man, took up the heroic identity in Peter’s absence. When a series of Carnage-Themed attacks descended upon Marvel’s Manhattan, Ben joined in the efforts to identify the villain, a path that would unwittingly lead to his own encounter with the Carnage Symbiote. As “Spider-Carnage,” Ben was fully engulfed in the whims of the symbiote. Where Peter had gained his experiences from the Secret Wars and subsequent adventures, the previously nomadic Ben Reilly was entirely unaccustomed to the mind-meld associated with symbiotic bonding.
3 Silver Surfer
When the Silver Surfer swooped in to aid Spider-Man during a battle with the escaped Cletus Kasady, the Carnage symbiote immediately reacted to his presence. Abandoning Kasady, the symbiote swiftly overwhelmed and bonded to the Silver Surfer, transforming him into “Carnage Cosmic.”
It subsequently began torturing him with visions of his previous selection of their homeworld for consumption by his former master Galactus. Driven into a mad and uncontrollable destructive streak, the symbiote possessed Surfer was prepared to utilize his Power Cosmic to destroy the universe if not for the quick actions of Spider-Man, who facilitated the return of the symbiote to its original owner; the lesser of two evils.
2 Norman Osborn
When the Goblin Serum that had long empowered Norman Osborn was neutralized in his bloodstream, he sought a remedy to regain his mean streak. After stealing the hostless Carnage Symbiote, he bonded with the entity and re-established himself as The Red Goblin.
As the alien attempted to exert its control, as it had done with every host before, Norman’s diabolical logic appealed to the creature, and the two embarked upon a mutually agreed campaign of destruction. One of the only hosts to ever fully control the Carnage Symbiote while wielding it, Spider-Man’s greatest foe would utilize the alien’s abilities in a final campaign against the wall-crawler.
1 Cletus Kasady
The original host of the Carnage Symbiote, Cletus Kasady’s imprint has been left upon the entity since their initial merger. As it was revealed that the alien Symbiote species is highly susceptible to the whims and personality traits of their first hosts, the bloodthirst of the Carnage Symbiote became much more understandable.
A serial killer facing 11 life sentences, Kasady was serendipitously bonded to the Carnage Symbiote while cellmates with Eddie Brock. Since bonding with Venom’s offspring, Cletus Kasaday has embarked upon multiple ruthless campaigns as Carnage, consistently finding new and creative ways to utilize its abilities. An irredeemable villain, Kasaday wants nothing more than to create carnage, and his corrupted symbiote has never hesitated to oblige.
