10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

Since it was first brought to Earth following 1984’s Secret Wars event, the alien “costume” that would come to be known as Venom has bonded with a variety of hosts. While some, like Peter Parker and Eddie Brock, are well known for their time with the symbiote, others are much less notorious.

Throughout its long and often parasitic history, the Venom Symbiote has been utilized by both villains and heroes alike, including many unexpected, but well-established denizens of the Marvel Universe.

10 Anne Weying

10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

Portrayed by actress Michelle Williams in the 2018 Venom film, the comic book version of Anne Weying is Eddie Brock’s ex-wife, who left him after he developed the obsession with Spider-Man that would ultimately lead to him becoming Venom. When Anne’s work as an attorney found her entangled amongst New York’s criminal underworld, she was caught in the crossfire of a hit on her client.

Racing to her aid, Eddie Brock would impart the Venom symbiote upon her in a desperate effort to save her life. Transformed into “She-Venom,” the inexperienced Weying struggled to control the alien’s impulsive nature. After brutally slaughtering a group of attempted assailants, Anne became horrified by her actions while merged with the symbiote. She would carry this trauma and resentment toward Brock for years after.

9 Groot

10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

Shortly after Agent Venom joined the Guardians of the Galaxy, the hive mind of the symbiote’s original species sensed its return to space and began to summon it home. Determined to complete this biological imperative, the creature reverted to its bestial nature, despite months of “taming” while bonded with Agent Venom.

In its efforts to escape, it bonded to a handful of the Guardians, including Rocket Raccoon and Drax. The most notable host during this event, however, is the fan-favorite Groot. Possessing the combined abilities of Venom and Groot, the resulting monster tore through the Guardian’s ship, all the while, of course, declaring, “I AM VENOM!”

8 Superior Spider-Man

10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

When a dying Doctor Octopus mind-swapped Peter Parker and assumed his life, he became The Superior Spider-Man. Infiltrating the ranks of The Avengers, he seized upon an opportunity to appropriate the alien suit from Agent Venom, becoming The Superior Venom.

At first bonding with him willingly, the symbiote quickly realized upon merging minds that this was not the Peter Parker that had hosted it before. As Octavius attempted to exert his will, the symbiote proved too powerful and fully corrupted him, rampaging against the combined Avengers. Despite his efforts to be a better Spider-Man than Peter ever was, it was actually a sliver of Parker’s personality buried deep in the subconscious of Otto’s commandeered body that ultimately gave him the necessary willpower to reject the alien.

7 Thunderbolt Ross

10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

After years of attempting to capture the original Hulk, General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross would eventually himself be transformed by gamma radiation into The Red Hulk. Wielding these incredible abilities, Ross eventually gained Avengers membership. While on a mission in Vegas, Red Hulk would be forced by circumstance into teaming up with Agent Venom, X-23, and the then-current Ghost Rider, Alejandra Jones.

As the demonic Blackheart attempted to merge Sin City with his own dark dimension, the heroes combined abilities with Ross as the focal point, briefly granting him both the Spirit of Vengeance and the Venom Symbiote. Although his tenure was short, Ross holds the distinction of being the only character to ever simultaneously be a Hulk, a Ghost Rider, and a host of the Symbiote. Furthermore, he adapted to all three roles with ease, a drastic contrast to the conflict and inner turmoil associated with the usual bearers of these mantels.

6 Deadpool

10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

Although his participation in the affair has been erased from the memories of all who were involved, Deadpool was present when an assortment of Marvel’s heroes and villains were transported to Battleworld during the Secret Wars. While there, he was actually the first to encounter and bond with the alien suit, before even Peter Parker himself.

Immediately realizing that his new “costume” was a living creature attempting to interface with his mind, Deadpool rejected the symbiote and contained it within an alien device, where it was eventually found by Spider-Man. The symbiotes themselves have been revealed to be a mostly benevolent species, but heavily influenced by the personality traits of their earliest hosts. Due to this, it is widely speculated that the madness that consumes the Venom Symbiote and by proxy, those who merge with it, originates from this early forgotten encounter with Deadpool’s deranged psyche.

5 Lee Price

10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

A decorated Army Ranger with a tragic and violent past, the stoic and calculating Lee Price obtained the Venom Symbiote in a chance encounter while attempting to sell his services to the criminal underworld. Reveling in his newfound power, Price set out to become a kingpin of organized crime.

As the symbiote attempted to assert its dominance upon his psyche, Lee’s determination would prove too overwhelming, giving him the distinction of one of the few hosts to fully subdue its will. One of the most ruthless and cunning versions of Venom to exist, Price’s tenure with the symbiote is checkered with moments in which he forced the alien to perform gruesome acts that even it objected to.

4 Mac Gargan

10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

As The Scorpion, Mac Gargan has been a frequent adversary of Spider-Man. After many failed attempts in this role, he sought an upgrade and came to possess the recently separated Venom Symbiote while attending an auction of super-villain paraphernalia.

Although he often conceded to its savage and cannibalistic inclinations, Gargan adjusted well to his new role and operated under the Venom identity for a lengthy and successful tenure. During his time bonded to the alien being, Gargan would find fame and celebrity after joining Norman Osborn’s “Dark Avengers,” where he appropriated the identity of his nemesis as the team’s evil Spider-Man.

3 Peter Parker

10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

Responsible for originally bringing the symbiote to Earth, Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man did not realize that his new “costume” was a living being. After weeks of constant fatigue, however, he sought the help of The Fantastic Four, where it was first revealed that the black suit he had recently acquired was actually alive, and trying to permanently bond with him.

To this end, it had secretly been taking an unconscious Peter on heroic excursions at night, controlling his body to generate the adrenal fluids it consumes. With the help of Reed Richards, Parker was able to deduce the symbiote’s now well-documented weakness to sonics, purging it before it could merge with him completely. Despite this rejection, the Venom Symbiote regularly alternates between resentment and desperate reconciliation when encountered with the wall-crawler.

2 Eddie Brock

10 Most Powerful Hosts Of The Venom Symbiote Ranked

The most famous host of the Venom Symbiote, Eddie Brock has undoubtedly spent more time in the role than anybody. Beginning as a psychotic villain born from Brock and the alien’s combined hatred for Spider-Man, the original Venom evolved over time into a vigilante anti-hero and lethal protector. As the first host to willingly accept it, Brock has a special bond with the creature, with the two recognizing each other as halves of a composite being, and referring to themselves in the plural, “we.”

Although they are inextricably linked, the relationship between Venom’s components has been rocky, with each side’s will attempting to dominate the other’s at various points and countless abandonments and betrayals from both. Despite this, they always inevitably reunite to resume their toxic relationship.

1 Flash Thompson

After losing his legs in combat, Corporal Flash Thompson was selected to become the host of the recently contained symbiote as a government operative dubbed “Agent Venom.” Initially informed that the alien’s will had been subdued by a chemical cocktail, Flash would come to find this wasn’t entirely true as the two interacted within his mind while bonded. Through many adventures, the two eventually gained each other’s trust, with Flash becoming the first host to frequently refer to the symbiote as his “partner,” and the alien reciprocating.

A longtime fan of Spider-Man, Flash was able to fulfill a dream when he was selected for Avengers membership, fighting alongside the heroes he admired and eventually becoming their representative in the Guardians of the Galaxy. Despite Brock and the Symbiote being synonymous with one another, Flash was able to work together with the alien more successfully during his time as Agent Venom, where each brought out the best in the other side of their partnership.
