The Eternals are coming to the MCU in a big way, with their ancient story teased in the first trailer for the movie. The trailer didn’t exactly showcase the many powers and abilities of the superhero team, but as longtime comic book readers know that among the Eternals are some very powerful characters.
Some of the Eternals are among the strongest characters in the Marvel Comics universe. With superhuman ability and immortality, the team is has been able to stand toe to toe with some of the most powerful cosmic Marvel characters, including their own creators, the towering and ancient Celestials.
10 The Interloper
One of the more obscure Eternals – but one of the most powerful – is The Interloper. He first appeared in The Defenders #147 where he helped the powerful superhero team fight off the Dragon of the Moon, who had taken control of Moon Dragon.
Like all of the Eternals, The Interloper possessed a foundation of considerable power including superhuman strength, stamina, and immortality. In addition to that, he is a very powerful psionic, able to project illusions, teleport, and induce fear into the minds of others.
9 The Over-Mind
The Eternal Grom was known as the Over-Mind because of his own powerful psionic ability. Beyond being a powerful telepath and telekinetic, he harnesses the minds of billions of ancient Eternals to increase his intellect and psychic ability. He also can project himself into the minds of others across cosmic distances.
This allowed him to become a vicious conqueror after leaving his nature planet of Eyung, one of the many planets that the Celestials experimented with the inhabitants to create super beings.
8 Thanos
Longtime comic readers know Thanos is an Eternal of sorts. He’s actually a hybrid of the Eternals and their enemies, the Deviants, from the planet of Titan. Thanos possesses the base strength, durability, and longevity of his ancestors, making him one of the best villains in the MCU and the comics.
He’s augmented that through various means, most notably through his use of the Infinity Stones and of course the Infinity Gauntlet. One of his most powerful talents is his intellect, which he has used in cruelly inventive ways over the years in his effort to shape existence as he sees fit.
7 Zuras
Zuras is the leader of the Eternals of Earth and the father of Thena, who Angelina Jolie plays in the movie. Zuras had all of the requisite powers of the Eternals and could manipulate matter to reconfigure objects. He could also generate energy blasts and shields to protect himself.
Though the Over-Mind used his psionic powers to divide and conquer, Zuras used his considerable mental ability to create the Uni-Mind, the collective consciousness of the Eternals that heightened all of their powers.
6 Makkari
Makkari is unique among the Eternals in his superhuman speed. While always fast, certainly on the order of Quicksilver, in later comic book storylines Makkari harnessed cosmic energy to amplify his speed even further. He has been able to run near the speed of light, which puts him shy of the records set by The Flash in DC Comics.
Makkari pays a price for his excessive speed, though. His other Eternal powers, like his strength, stamina, and psionic abilities are all diminished relative to his peers.
5 Sersi
Sersi is one of the most powerful members of the Eternals thanks to her ability to transmute matter. She can do this on a scale that hasn’t really been graphed yet and may rival even that of someone like the Scarlet Witch. Sersi is able to reorganize matter on an atomic level.
For much of her early comic book history, Sersi’s power was identified as magical in nature, but this isn’t the case. She is a fourth-generation Eternal who was born in the ancient past, evidently after the sinking of Atlantis by the Celestials.
4 Ikaris
Ikaris doesn’t have the psionic abilities of some of his peers, but his ability to absorb and harness latent cosmic energy makes him extremely powerful. Ikaris can fly at tremendous speeds as well as generate energy blasts hot enough to melt lead.
His destructive potential is off the charts, especially when factoring in his being able to teleport great distances. Ikaris is a truly powerful warrior, virtually invulnerable and never getting tired thanks to his steady diet of cosmic energy.
3 The Forgotten One
The Forgotten One has had a few names in Marvel Comics, including Hero and Gilgamesh. One thing that hasn’t varied is that this Eternal is one of the most powerful of their number. He’s also been a part of the most powerful Avengers rosters ever, in the early ’90s.
He has the standard superpowers associated with all of the Eternals but has physical strength and stamina in excess of the others. He is an extremely adept hand-to-hand fighter, ranking him among the best Marvel martial artists.
2 Thena
Thena is one of the most powerful members of the Eternals, able to manipulate matter on a terrific scale. Whereas Sersi can restructure matter into whatever she wishes, Thena draws on cosmic energy to do it. She’s essentially a living battery, harnessing the natural ambient energy of the universe to give her a boost in everything she does.
Thena tends to focus her ability to structure matter into weapons, such as her sword, which was teased in a brief shot in the first trailer from the upcoming movie.
1 Kronos
Kronos is perhaps the most powerful of the Eternals, though the true extent of his powers isn’t even known. He was born with all of the base powers of the Eternals, but then a scientific experiment transformed him into a living cloud of energy.
Not unlike Dr. Manhattan from the Watchmen saga, Kronos gained a cosmic awareness beyond human comprehension. He seems to have control over time and is also able to wield the Power Cosmic, which only a few characters like Galactus and the Silver Surfer can do.
