A terrifying version of Doctor Strange appeared in a recent episode of What If…?, becoming one of the most powerful versions of the Sorcerer Supreme seen so far in the MCU. Many other versions beyond Doctor Strange exist in Marvel Comics, all of them awesome in power and with as much potential for more as the Dark Strange himself.

Some of the variants of the Sorcerer Supreme exist within the expanded multiverse of Marvel established in the What If..? comics and elsewhere. Others come from the long history of Earth-616, going back to before civilization and the very origins of magic in the Marvel Universe.

10 Iron Man

The Tony Stark of Earth-9810 combined the magical powers of Doctor Strange and the inventive genius of Iron Man. This version of the Sorcerer Supreme, who emerged in What If..? #113 when Stark felt responsible for Strange’s car accident, developed a set of Sorcerer Armor. The armor allowed Stark to battle against Dormammu by coming with a hard drive of magical spells and enchanted weaponry.

Though this variant was essentially the same in power as the 616 Doctor Strange, the armor gave him an additional means of defense.

9 Loki

Loki becomes the Sorcerer Supreme in a surprising turn of fate for Doctor Strange in the main Marvel continuity of Earth-616. With all the magical powers Loki has in the comics, the added mystical benefit of the Eye of Agamotto as well as the Cloak of Levitation make Loki even more powerful.

The Cloak of Levitation allows Loki to fly, while the Eye gives him an almost cosmic perception. Combined with his native ability to cast illusions, this Loki was particularly powerful during his brief tenure as the Sorcerer Supreme.

Illyana Rasputin, also known as Magik, is a powerful magician with the Soul Sword in Earth-616. In What If? Magik #1 from 2018, she becomes the Sorceress Supreme. She combines the powers of Doctor Strange and her mystical powers via the Soul Sword as the master of the Limbo dimension, able to travel back and forth between realities.

In this reality, the Soul Sword became the Soul Staff, able to counter and break magical spells, injure or destroy other magical beings, as well as harness the power of the skipping stones that allow a person to travel through the Limbo dimension.

2 Doctor Doom

Doctor Doom is a powerful magician in his own right, but in Earth-14412, he became the Sorcerer Supreme. This variant, which first appeared in Thor #5 in 2018, combined a frightening number of abilities including that of Doctor Strange, Iron Fist, and Starbrand.

1 Agamotto

Agamotto is a member of the Vishanti and the Sorcerer Supreme in the year 1,000,000 B.C. Agamotto is omniscient and could be omnipotent as well, having the power to defeat both Dormammu and Galactus in the ancient past. Galactus was unable to defeat Agamotto because Agamotto wasn’t just a person, but a living embodiment of his entire dimension.

He is also able to cross time and reality through any number of dimensions, remaining an active force in the present by conferring both mystical objects and wisdom on subjects like Doctor Strange.
