10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

Every year, new sitcoms come out on network television, and, nowadays, streaming services. Some stand the test of time, while others last a single season, sometimes less, before getting the axe. The 2010s was an interesting decade in television. It brought some of the most intriguing and exciting new sitcoms, like Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Modern Family, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, Grace & Frankie, Community—the list goes on.

But, among those that got all of the attention were a few hidden gems that don’t get all of the glory but are solid sitcoms worth watching, and here are 10 prominent examples.

10 The Unicorn (2019)

10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

It’s one of those sitcoms that has flown under the radar for the last year, quietly debuting on CBS and being watched by those who most likely were just flicking the channel and caught it right at the moment of a good joke. The Unicorn is actually really, really funny, and it employs an original concept, a rarity when it comes to sitcoms these days.

The story follows Wade, a widowed father whose friends try to encourage him to get back into the dating game, after which he realizes he’s a rare form of man they call a “unicorn:” a single man in his 40s who isn’t divorced and is a great father. Naturally, his dating profile gets plenty of hits and hilarity ensues as he tries to get back out there. The show has been renewed for a second season.

9 The Neighborhood (2018)

10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

For viewers who are OK with predictable laugh tracks, cheesy jokes, and overacting, this CBS sitcom is actually worth watching. While some might roll their eyes at the absurdity of it all, these qualities are really what defined a lot of the best sitcoms from decades prior.

While the methods are very in-your-face, the underlying theme of acceptance and racial equality on this sitcom is a great one. Dave Johnson, his wife, and son move into a predominantly black neighborhood and while his neighbor Calvin is at first angered by this, the two families soon become good friends, though that doesn’t come without both making fun of the other and finding hilarious ways to shatter misconceptions. The series has been renewed for a third season.

8 Don’t Trust The B in Apartment 23 (2012)

10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

Fans were angered when ABC canceled this series after just two seasons when it was seemingly pretty popular among fans. It takes the typical trope of two unlikely friends meeting, initially being annoyed with one another, and then striking up a bond.

The “B” in question is a party girl who seeks out roommates only to drive them away after taking their rent. But June, a conservative young woman, won’t seem to leave, and, despite their differences, they start to have fun together. It also starred James Van Der Beek as a fictionalized version of himself and Eric Andre.

7 Schitt’s Creek (2015)

10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

Technically, this Canadian series, which aired on CBC, was only underrated until Netflix saw something in it and picked it up for the streaming service. After that, the series became one of the most talked-about ones of the decade.

It wasn’t, however, until the creator Dan Levy, son of Eugene Levy, both of whom star in the show alongside Catherine O’Hara, was planning for the final season that Schitt’s Creek really got noticed. Many believe it ended too soon after six seasons. So, while it was technically under-rated for far too long, it started to get its much-deserved accolades just in time.

6 Happy Endings (2011)

10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

Fans were so angered when ABC canceled this show that they started a petition online to bring it back. Had it aired in this day and age, one of the top streaming networks might have picked it up. But, it was right at the beginning of the decade when this show launched in an attempt to modernize the Friends concept.

It was about six best friends and their daily doings, including an interracial couple that consisted of a neurotic wife and overachieving husband, the daydreamer, slacker, party girl, and the ditzy one. There was good chemistry among the cast, yet some believe the scheduling of the show, which kept changing, might have led to the declining ratings.

5 The Mick (2017)

10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

The Mick did get some attention when it was released in 2017 on Fox. Yet, that slowly petered out when viewers seemingly forgot about it or just forgot to watch it. The show was about an irresponsible woman named Mick who finds herself being forced into the role of parental guardian for her niece and nephews after her rich sister and her husband are arrested for fraud and tax evasion.

It was a funny fish-out-of-water show about a woman who knows nothing about parenting and is pretty aimless in general, trying to raise three children on her own.

4 One Day At A Time (2017)

10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

A reboot of the original series that aired from 1975-1984, this version is a modern take on the idea of a single mom living in an apartment with her kids and elderly mother. The cast was phenomenal, the storylines were excellent and thought-provoking, and the jokes were hilarious. Yet, Netflix canceled the show after three seasons.

A testament to the fact that One Day at a Time didn’t get the credit it deserved, however, is that Pop swept in and renewed the show for a fourth season, making it the first streaming original to be saved by a linear network versus the other way around.

3 Superstore (2015)

10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

It’s one of those sitcoms that those who watched from the beginning continue to watch, but no one ever thinks to start binging it now. Yet, the single-camera sitcom is hilarious. American Ferrera and Ben Feldman star as two people working in a fictional big-box store in Missouri.

Superstore, which airs on NBC, has been renewed for a sixth season. While initial reviews for the series were mixed, it has steadily become more recognized as one of the better sitcoms currently on television through subsequent seasons.

2 Fresh Off the Boat (2015)

10 Most Underrated Sitcoms Of The 2010s

There aren’t many representations of Asian families on television, and this ABC series is a hilarious take on a traditional Taiwanese-American family. Set in the 90s, Constance Wu is the glue that holds the family on Fresh Off the Boat together, but the entire cast contributes to making it a hilarious sitcom that transcends race.

The story is that of the Huang family who lives in Florida and runs a steakhouse. The central characters include the parents, their three sons, the grandmother, and their white neighbors and best friends.

1 Workin’ Moms (2017)

Another gem from Canada, this sitcom got more attention, like Schitt’s Creek, once it appeared on Netflix. Airing originally on CBC, it’s the story of four women and their lives as working mothers to new babies.

The cast, led by Catherine Reitman, is stellar and, the writing is hilariously bold, crass, and honest; it’s everything working moms are thinking or want to say but never do, making it one of the most relatable comedies on television. There have been four seasons so far, with a fifth in the works.
