TV fans pride themselves on being able to follow the clues laid out by writers and uncover plot twists before they happen. Certain tropes have become so prevalent in serial storytelling that the audience can often tell when a character survives or is going to betray their allies. There’s no shame on the part of a writer in fans being able to suss those things out. Some plot points or character reveals can be a surprise though even more for the most experienced TV watchers, and Teen Wolf proved that many times over.

For Teen Wolf, much of the behind-the-scenes discussions were made public to fans, so the audience often knew when a character was leaving or returning, they just didn’t know how. Those decisions in the series often made for some of the most unexpected moments. Every surprise in the show certainly added to things in interesting ways.

10 Lydia Is A Banshee

At the end of season 1, Lydia is entirely freaked out about the supernatural goings-on in Beacon Hills. There’s a large part of her that wants to pretend it doesn’t exist, as she does after her first encounter with a werewolf. Her second, however, has her refusing to hide the injuries she’s suffered and start to question just why she survived. Lydia doesn’t know, for a long time, just what her own onset of supernatural abilities are from, but she knows that she’s something.

As it turns out, she’s a banshee. At the time of the reveal, only shapeshifting creatures had been the main draw of the show. Lydia finding out she’s a banshee opened the door for a whole world of supernatural beings, and brought on plenty of theorizing from fans as to just what else could be lurking in the shadows of Beacon Hills. Fan favorite Lydia even goes on to become one of the most powerful characters in Teen Wolf once she understands what she can do.

9 Meredith Is The Benefactor

The mysterious Benefactor puts a price on the heads of supernatural creatures all over Beacon Hills. Some characters are shocked when they find out there are hundreds of thousands of dollars available to hunters if they kill them. It’s a storyline where suddenly no one in town can be trusted, but so many fans wondered if the Benefactor would be a new bad guy for the show in a long-term arc.

Instead, the Benefactor turns out to be a disillusioned Meredith who thinks the world is better off without supernatural creatures putting everyone in danger. It was a completely unexpected reveal, especially since Meredith had helped Lydia come into her own powers.

8 Kate Survives The Werewolf Attack

Teen Wolf is no stranger to death. Allison loses her mother very early in the series, after all. So, when Kate Argent’s throat was slashed by a vampire, the audience expected her to be gone for good. Kate ended up being transformed after her werewolf attack instead.

Kate doesn’t transform into a werewolf though, which is part of why the reveal of her being alive worked so well. She becomes a werejaguar instead, introducing some new mythology to the series. The idea that a character’s transformation reflected who they were instead of being a direct reaction to what creature injured them is one of the most interesting parts of the show’s premise.

7 Danny Knows About The Supernatural

In the early seasons of the show, Danny is always just on the outside of the supernatural conflicts. His best friend is someone who wants to become a werewolf; he overhears plenty of Scott and Stiles’ conversations; he even dates a werewolf.

Plenty of fans thought Danny would be the “token human” in a world of supernatural beings, though that role belongs to Stiles. Instead, right before he vanishes from the show, Danny reveals that he’s well aware of the supernatural and that he figured that his friends would talk to him about it when they needed to.

6 Scott And Malia End Up Together

It’s not unusual for series centered on teens to see a lot of romantic partner switching – especially if the show goes on for a long time. That’s not the case in Teen Wolf though. Very few characters have a new love interest every season. Over the course of the show, Scott, for example, only has lengthy relationships with Allison and Kira, while Malia only dates Stiles. He and Malia, much to the surprise of the audience, are revealed to be together in the final episodes.

While it seems to come out of nowhere, the pairing does actually make sense. Malia and Scott are a great support system for one another when other members of the pack can’t help them. The bonds of the pack also appear most important to the two of them. Though it might not have been a pairing people expected, it’s one that works.

5 Jackson Leaves Town After Transforming

Jackson is a very unhappy teenager when his story starts. He allows jealousy to consume him when Scott is suddenly stronger and faster, stopping at nothing to learn his secrets. Once Jackson does, however, he ends up as a kanima, and he has a brief arc of coming to terms with who he is to become a werewolf.

Fans were so excited to see how the landscape of the show would change with Jackson and Scott both as werewolves – except, Jackson is promptly written out of the series due to the actor pursuing another project. It’s a shame because it would have been interesting to see how the dynamic changed. Of course, Jackson ultimately gets a great character ending in the final season of the show, so most fans were still satisfied.

4 Derek’s Sister Is Alive

There’s a lot of talk about how tragic the Hale family history is early in the show. Derek’s entire family is said to be killed in a fire – repeatedly. That’s why fans are so surprised when Cora Hale suddenly shows up on the scene as Derek’s little sister.

Cora, it’s explained, has been living with another pack before she’s kidnapped by the Alpha pack. That’s all well and good, and Cora’s even a pretty interesting character as she tries to stand on her own while still bonding with her brother. Unfortunately, her time on the series is incredibly short-lived, and the audience would have liked to see more of her other than her shocking introduction.

3 Stiles Accidentally Kills Someone

One of the most tragically unexpected scenes in the show is Stiles taking the life of another person. That’s partly because Stiles doesn’t have the same combat advantages of fangs, strength, and speed that so many other characters have.

Stiles, admittedly, does it in self-defense, but it’s a hugely tragic moment that terrifies him and nearly leads to the dissolution of his long-time friendship with Scott. It’s all part of Theo’s plan, and for the audience, the most shocking part of it is that it almost works. Not only does Stiles suffer with the knowledge of what he does, but the body disappears, and Scott believes Theo’s version of events instead of Stiles. It’s an entirely unexpected turn of events.

2 Melissa And Chris Date

For a long time, fans of Teen Wolf thought that Melissa McCall and Noah Stillinski might end up together, making Scott and Stiles’ brotherly relationship official. Instead, by the final season of the show, Melissa is dating Chris Argent, Allison’s father.

It’s got to be a little awkward for two people whose teenagers dated to pursue a romantic relationship. The two face life and death together on a regular basis though. They’re a united front when it comes to protecting the kids in town and helping the supernatural beings who don’t pose threats to others, so they do have a lot in common, and it’s not an unhappy union for fans.

1 Allison Dies

Before the episode even aired, fans were already aware that actress Crystal Reed was leaving the show at some point; they just weren’t sure how her character would. Her death floored the fans who expected her to simply leave town.

It’s certainly one of the most unexpected moments in the entire series as Allison Argent proves herself as able to keep up with the supernatural creatures before she’s even fully aware of their existence. Her training to become a hunter is intense, and she excels at it. Fans didn’t expect to lose her the way they did.
