10 Tanjiro Vs. Kyogai

Set early on in Demon Slayer, Tanjiro’s fight against the demon Kyogai had quite a unique tone. Kyogai is revealed to be the former Lower Rank Six demon and though he was the lowest of the Demon Moons, he was still powerful. His strength and status, as well as his ability to make the rooms of the mansion he inhabits change at will, made Tanjiro’s fight with him not only difficult, but stunning to watch as the anime adaptation made full use of the rotating rooms.

9 Tanjiro & Nezuko Vs. Rui

The Kamado siblings’ struggle against the Lower Demon Moon Rui introduced new aspects to Demon Slayer. Tanjiro remembered the Hinokami Kagura or Sun Breathing — a fighting style that had been passed down through his family. Nezuko also awakened her Blood Demon Art for the first time since becoming a demon. Not only was the fight a magnificent fan-favorite with great animation, music, and emotional weight, but the powers awakened in the siblings become important later on.

8 Rengoku Vs. Akaza

Akaza is the first Upper Rank demon that appears in Demon Slayer. His first fight is startingly unique in that it ends in tragedy for the heroes. Rengoku, the Flame Hashira, does his best to fight Akaza — he’s the only one who can match the demon’s powers — but ultimately, he Akaza defeats Rengoku and Rengoku dies as a result of his injuries.

The fight between Akaza and Rengoku serves to showcase the immense power of the Upper Rank demons; it is animated beautifully and highlights the tragic death of Rengoku.

7 Tengen & Company Vs. Daki & Gyutaro

The fight against Daki and Gyutaro takes place across several different encounters. Originally, Tanjiro, Zenitsu, Inosuke, and Tengen think they are only up against Daki, but that idea is turned on its head when it is revealed that Daki’s brother, Gyutaro, has been inhabiting her body — meaning there are two separate enemies. Zenitsu and Inosuke take on Daki while Tengen and Tanjiro fight Gyutaro. Both groups have to utilize teamwork to cut off the demons’ heads at the same time while fighting separate battles.

6 Giyuu & Tanjiro Vs. Akaza

Long-awaited by Demon Slayer fans, the battle between Akaza and Tanjiro serves as Tanjiro’s way of avenging Rengoku’s death. With Giyuu by his side, who unlocks his Demon Slayer Mark during the fight, Tanjiro stands a chance against Akaza. During the fight, Tanjiro unlocks access to the “Transparent World,” a concept that has been hinted at before that allows him to dodge Akaza’s attacks and defeat him. The “Transparent World” technique becomes more prevalent in Demon Slayer after this fight, establishing it as a useful method of fighting.

5 Shinobu, Kanao, & Inosuke Vs. Douma

The battle to take down Douma, Upper Rank Two, starts off as Shinobu battles him alone. However, Shinobu loses the fight and is absorbed into Douma’s body, leaving the fight up to Kanao and Inosuke when they arrive.

Both Kanao and Inosuke have individual vendettas against Douma, Kanao for Shinobu’s death and Inosuke for his mother’s. Though neither of them are on the level of Hashira, they manage to defeat Douma with help from Shinobu, who had ingested wisteria poison before she was absorbed. They were able to give a well-deserved end to the demon.

4 Tanjiro & Inosuke Vs. Enmu

One of the greatest fights of the Mugen Train arc, Tanjiro and his friends find themselves battling not just demons, but an entire train. Enmu, Lower Rank One, merged his body with the train the Demon Slayers boarded, leaving them fighting against very thing they are riding. Tanjiro and Inosuke undertake the final fight that will decide the victor, using their swordsmanship to reveal Enmu’s twisted body underneath the shell of the normal train. The two Demon Slayers combine their skills to combat Enmu’s Blood Demon Art and emerge victorious.

3 Mitsuri & Obanai Vs. Nakime

Though she was not named until later in Demon Slayer, Nakime is established early on as a demon that holds control over Muzan’s Infinity Castle with her biwa. When Mitsure and Obanai are trapped inside the Infinity Castle, the two Hashira try to fight Nakime. Nakime’s Blood Demon Art proves to be not as deadly as other demons’ have been, but it is frustrating and difficult for the Hashira to navigate as she constantly changes the landscape. They are saved from a long and difficult fight by Yushiro who takes Nakime by surprise and defeats her.

2 Gyomei, Genya, Muichiro, & Sanemi Vs. Kokushibo

Kokushibo is Upper Rank One and he proves himself worthy of his title as three Hashira and another skilled Demon Slayer struggle to take him down. Kokushibo uses Moon Breathing, a derivative of the Sun Breathing originated by Yoriichi. Yoriichi is actually Kokushibo’s long-dead twin brother and an influential character in Demon Slayer.

Kokushibo is the only demon to use breathing styles like the Demon Slayers and it gives him extra strength. Fighting Kokushibo is so difficult that Sanemi and Gyomei unlock their Demon Slayer Marks and they are only able to take him down with intense coordination — but Muichiro and Genya do not make it out alive.

1 Demon Slayers Vs. Muzan

The penultimate fight of Demon Slayer, the final battle against Muzan, features just about every remaining living character in the series. The remaining Hashira and Demon Slayers battle against Muzan and try to keep him outside until the sun rises and he can be disintegrated. The trio of Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Zenitsu come together for the final fight. Tanjiro finally fully masters the Sun Breathing technique and Muzan sees Yoriichi in him — though his skills do not match the previous Slayer. With the combined efforts of everyone, Muzan is finally killed — but the fight is costly.
