Disney’s memorable songs, exciting romances, and fun adventures are what its movies are all about. There are dozens of widely successful animated films that will always be a part of the powerful legacy that the company has created over the years. Especially those from the ’90’s movies, which, to this day, are still considered iconic and have shaped the childhood of a generation of fans.
So much of what has connected audiences to Disney films is how characters develop strong bonds with each other. Granted, it’s easy to think that romantic relationships are at the core of its motion pictures but another thing that these have in common is some special friendships. Even those alliances that viewers wouldn’t have dreamed of ended up proving to be valuable assets for each narrative.
10 Mowgli And Baloo
Two characters from two very different worlds blended perfectly in The Jungle Book. Baloo, the happy-go-lucky bear, befriends the young orphan Mowgli and, together, they go through all sorts of groovy adventures. Their most iconic moment is when they roam around while singing the classic “The Bear Necessities” tune, showing off how genuine and captivating their friendship is.
But the way this duo started being close is also pretty sweet as it came off completely unexpected. One day, Baloo found Mowgli lost in the jungle and the two connected so fast, that Baloo promised to raise him himself.
9 Sven And Kristoff
Friendships between humans and animals are always endearing for viewers, even if at first glance they might look unlikely to develop. Just like Mowgli and Baloo, Frozen’s Sven and Kristoff are two buddies who are there for one another no matter what. Their goofy nature and helpful assistance to Anna give them the perfect roles as sidekicks in this movie.
Their inter-species affinity is unlike many fans have seen on screen but, when put together, it makes total sense. Sven’s loyalty to his owner is adorable and what’s fascinating is how they easily understand each other even if the reindeer don’t say a word.
8 Quasimodo And The Gargoyles
A beautiful bond between a human and sculptures? Check that one too. Disney producers nailed it when they decided to join Quasimodo with the three loving gargoyles (Victor, Hugo, and Laverne) in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Confined in the bell tower of this Paris’ landmark, he is forced to have no friends.
So, these creatures are the only social interactions he seems to have in this place, and they not only help him to make wise decisions but also care for his feelings. Nonetheless, they become this hunchback’s only confidant, and they warm viewers’ hearts with their genuine concern for him.
7 Woody And Buzz Lightyear
One of the most cherished twosomes in Disney’s history are the Toy Story protagonists. Woody and Buzz Lightyear truly became best friends who will always have each other’s backs. Throughout the three movies of this saga, the two face several ups and downs, fighting enemies together and saving one another on almost every occasion.
Though they may have started on the wrong foot, not only because they came from different toy worlds (a cowboy wouldn’t probably mix well with an astronaut) but they also competed for Andy’s affection. Once they were able to set aside their differences, fans know their bond becomes unbreakable.
6 Pinocchio And Jiminy Cricket
An endearing friendship that, at first glance, wouldn’t have much in common to be able to work. On one side you have a marionette eager to be turned into a real child and on the other, there is this little cricket who acts as Pinocchio’s voice of consciousness through every adventure together.
Yet, Jiminy is always sticking up for his pal regardless of how dangerous his ideas are and no matter what life throws their way, they handle it together. No one will ever forget how their close tie was crucial to escape the belly of a whale and save their lives.
5 Genie And The Magic Carpet
There’s something special when an object is a subject of a strong friendship with a talking living being. It’s easy to say that the Magic Carpet in Aladdin’s movie is one of the most delightful creatures in Disney history because of its distinct personality and pure heart. A sentient Persian carpet who never speaks a word but its movements say so much.
Even though this carpet’s very likable traits would make anyone want to be close with it, its relationship with the Genie was rather unlikely to exist. But the fact is that until Aladdin and Abu came along, this duo were each others’ only friends as they had been stuck in the Cave Of Wonders together for centuries. Yet, even when the four characters become a squad, the Genie and the Magic Carpet continue to care deeply for one another until the very end.
4 Rafiki And Simba
Unlike other famous friendships, Rafiki and Simba don’t have all that many scenes together in the Lion King I and II. But they don’t need to because their respect for each other speaks volumes when they meet. Everyone honors the old shaman Rafiki, the mandrill who plays a crucial role in the Pride Lands. He advises the young king on the best course of action and Simba appreciates his input greatly, especially because of his ancient and very close relationship with his father (Mufasa).
In the first movie, no die-hard fan will ever forget the scene where Rafiki, with the help of Mufasa’s spirit, convinces Simba to return home and fight for his rightful place as a king.
3 Hercules And Pegasus
As toddlers, these two beings had everything to blossom a beautiful friendship because they were supposed to grow up together. Pegasus – the quirky, noble white horse with wings – was created by Zeus, Hercules’ father, as a gift to his newborn son. But an unexpected kidnapping made Hercules be far away from Pegasus throughout his entire childhood and the two only reunited when the then-teenager visited the Temple of Zeus.
Despite all those years apart, a fully-grown Pegasus comes into the picture again, and this duo kickstarts an unlikely friendship, with the horse remaining faithful to protecting Hercules from all sorts of dangers. Still, their bond is not always agreeable and Pegasus later reveals jealousy over Megara’s presence in his best friend’s life. But, of course, everyone gets their happy ending.
2 Mushu And Mulan
Odds were not in this duo’s favor when they were paired up in Mulan. The young dragon is certainly the comic relief of the movie and it’s fair to say that his respect and belief in Mulan’s mission was a big part in developing trust in this unexpected friendship. As she starts to confide with him, they become great partners in helping each other act courageously in their adventures together.
They have many differences in their personalities and argue quite a lot, but they support one another and Mushu honors Mulan so much that he never leaves her side unless he is forced to do so. Besides being funny, the dragon is nothing but solid towards her in his encouragement all throughout the film.
1 Carl And Russell
A free-spirited child becomes friends with an elderly, grieving man. Improbable to have much in common but it quickly becomes easy to see how one is the yin to the other’s yang throughout Up. Ironically, the most unlikely friendship in this list ends up being the one that is between two humans. But the truth is these two go through quite a ride together, one that clearly was not planned and that, initially, displeased a very cranky Carl.
However, through trial and tribulation, this friendship emerges in unexpected ways, while they spend their time in Carl’s floating house in the air, and they become best buddies. The lonely young Russell ends up winning a close friend after going above and beyond in assisting the elderly and they both prove that a true connection with someone doesn’t care about age at all.
