10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

Sports are an exciting escape from real life, and so are movies. When combined, the world of sports and film has offered up everything from thrilling tales of underdogs overcoming impossible odds to characters learning valuable lessons. These stories may be engaging and exciting, but they aren’t always very realistic.

Sometimes, films bend the rules of well-known sports or invent entirely new ones. Other times, they put characters in impossible situations or give them unrealistic abilities. Regardless of why, sports films often ask the audience to suspend their disbelief.

10 Slap Shot (1977)

10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

Taking place in a gritty industrial town, Slap Shot’s setting is perfect for the intense hockey action it shows on screen. Paul Newman is a washed-up pro hockey player desperate to save a small-town team from being relocated to Miami. Along the way, he embraces hockey’s violent reputation and puts on a show for the fans.

Though the scenes on the ice are exciting and often hilarious, they are not very realistic when it comes to representing the sport. Despite being considered one of the best hockey movies of all time, it doesn’t do the sport justice. Hockey has always been a more physical sport, but a lot of the violence, especially from the Hanson brothers, would have landed them in the penalty box — or jail.

9 Major League (1989)

10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

In Major League, the ailing Cleveland baseball team is in a very familiar situation in sports movies. Their owner wants to move them away to a new city and to do so she has to tank the team by undermining them at every step. A veteran catcher, played by Tom Berenger, rallies together a band of baseball misfits in an attempt to save the team by winning games.

Watching a team of wily veterans and un-drafted walk-ons win the pennant is a funny and feel-good underdog story, but it isn’t at all realistic in its portrayal of sports business. No matter how much an owner may want to relocate their team on a whim, they still have to go through years of red tape with the league before the move could even be considered. Major League is a great movie for people who aren’t sports fans, but it isn’t great for detail-oriented baseball fanatics.

8 Rookie Of The Year (1993)

10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

Every young baseball fan dreams of one day playing in the majors and in Rookie of the Year, one kid’s dream comes true. After a botched shoulder surgery, young Henry finds that he can throw a baseball with blinding speed. Soon he is discovered by a major league team and he pitches in the majors to help save the Chicago Cubs.

Putting aside the idea that a shoulder surgery somehow would make a kid throw with impossible velocity, the idea that a child could play in the majors is also far-fetched. Even the most sought-after young players get drafted out of high school and then, they spend several years in the minor leagues before ever playing for their big league club.

7 The Longest Yard (2005)

10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

The Longest Yard tells the story of a disgraced quarterback, played by Burt Reynolds, who is sentenced to prison. While inside, he decides to lead a team of prisoners against a team of guards for bragging rights. Along the way, he and his fellow teammates are threatened and harassed by the guards who want to win the game.

A darkly comic film to its core, The Longest Yard is also highly unrealistic. A friendly football game between prisoners and guards is not a particularly farfetched idea, and it even has a basis in history. What is outlandish though is the lengths that the warden is willing to go to win the game, going so far as to threaten characters with further charges if they don’t throw it.

6 Ready To Rumble (2000)

10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

Two die-hard fans of the World Wrestling Championship are heartbroken when their favorite wrestler, the King, is ousted from the company. Together, they join forces with their disgraced hero and help him infiltrate a taping of the show in an attempt to win back his lost championship.

Professional wrestling is a form of show business. Like other elements of show business, the behind-the-scenes machinations of the company often have nothing to do with what fans see on screen. The scripted and predetermined nature of professional wrestling makes it highly unlikely that a former employee could break into a show and actually fight someone for a championship.

5 Rocky Balboa (2006)

10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

In Rocky Balboa, the titular hero is called back into action in his 60s, after a TV show compares him to the current heavyweight champion. Though only intending to fight locally, Rocky eventually finds himself face to face with the champion in a highly publicized exhibition boxing match.

Despite the series being filled with underdog comebacks and unrealistic situations, it is the aged Rocky’s in-ring return that is the most unbelievable moment of the series. The fact that Balboa is even able to secure his boxing license is highly suspect and when the fight goes to a draw, the film becomes even more unrealistic.

4 Little Big League (1994)

10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

When young Billy’s grandfather passes away, he learns that he is the new owner of the Minnesota Twins baseball team. Determined to do his best as the new owner, Billy decides to appoint himself as manager of the ball club and sets out to return the team to its former glory.

Little Big League is a childhood fantasy come to life and like most childhood fantasies, it is totally unrealistic. Sports team ownership does often pass from generation to generation but never to one so young. Children in adult work environments opens the door to a slew of legal entanglements. Even forgetting that, the year-round schedule would make it impossible for Billy to balance his schooling and his job as owner and manager.

3 Blades Of Glory (2007)

10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

Starring Will Ferrell in one of his most memorable roles, Blades of Glory is the story of two Olympic figure skaters who tie for gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics. Their ensuing fight on the podium gets them banned from competition for life. Though bitter enemies, the two learn of a loophole that allows them to return to Olympic competition in the doubles category. Together, they have to put aside their differences to win gold.

Though obviously intended as a laugh-a-minute comedy, Blades of Glory is still quite unrealistic in its portrayal of figure skating and Olympic competition. When athletes are banned by the Olympic committee, there is very little that can be done to circumvent it. It isn’t very believable that such a glaring loophole would exist within the strict Olympic rules.

2 Air Bud (1997)

10 Most Unrealistic Sports Movies

Air Bud is the tale of a shy young boy who befriends a stray dog named Buddy. While playing for his high school basketball team, he learns that Buddy has a penchant for shooting hoops and the dog becomes their mascot. Eventually, they make it all the way to the championship game, where a series of injuries leave them short one player. Miraculously, Buddy joins the team and helps them win the big game.

Dogs are very intelligent animals that can be trained to perform any number of important tasks, even shooting baskets. That being said, it is not very realistic to expect a dog to perform in a team sport setting, let alone even be allowed to compete in high school sports. A dog playing basketball may be one of the weirdest moments in sports movie history, but it isn’t very realistic.

1 Shaolin Soccer (2001)

Coming out of Hong Kong, Shaolin Soccer is the story of a Shaolin master who hopes to bring the message of Shaolin to the masses by creating an unbeatable soccer team. Using their martial arts skills, the Shaolin team combines both sports disciplines to defeat an evil corporate soccer team.

Bringing the radical action style of Shaolin martial arts into a soccer film pushes Shaolin Soccer into unrealistic territory. Though the skills needed to master martial arts can be applied to other disciplines, it isn’t believable that skilled martial artists would naturally excel at soccer, and the training required to master a team sport like soccer isn’t necessarily naturally present in martial arts disciplines.
