The 1990s were the golden era of the romantic comedy, with directors like Nora Ephron and Richard Curtis tugging at audiences’ heartstrings and actors such as Drew Barrymore, Tom Hanks, and Julia Roberts portraying the perfect love stories fans wished could happen to them.

Not everything in the 1990s was wholesome – this was also the decade when Quentin Tarantino first hit our screens with Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction, after all – but romantic comedies showed the viewer a simple, sweet world where initial animosity or misunderstandings would always inevitably transform into the perfect Happily Ever After. While these couples were busy falling in love with one another, the audience fell in love with them too.

10 Anna & William – Notting Hill (1999)

Top Hollywood A-lister, Anna Scott (Julia Roberts) and ordinary guy, William Thacker (Hugh Grant) have plenty of bumps in their relationship in Notting Hill. The good-natured bookseller struggles with Anna’s celebrity lifestyle and Anna doesn’t always treat William very kindly, but in true rom-com style, they find their happy ending.

This is a wholesome movie romance and sex is never shown on screen. Instead, the film cuts from Anna and William kissing to the pair waking up together the next morning. Most importantly, by falling in love, Anna and William discover that there’s more to life than Hollywood tinsel. Stars are real people with real needs. As Anna says: “I’m just a girl. Standing in front of a boy. Asking him to love her.”

9 Danielle & Henry – Ever After (1998)

Starring Drew Barrymore and Dougray Scott, Ever After is framed as the true “non-Disney” version of the Cinderella story. Danielle and Prince Henry first meet when – believing him to be a horse thief – she throws an apple at him. After several more chance encounters, Prince Henry is smitten with Danielle’s intelligence and forthright opinions. Danielle is unsure about the Prince, believing him to be arrogant and out-of-touch, but his genuine desire to change wins her round.

This wholesome romance stays true to the Cinderella fairy-tale but also allows its characters more depth than the original. Danielle is principled, Henry is conscientious, and both of them, in the course of falling in love with one another, become better people.

8 Kat & Patrick – 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)

A movie based on Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shrew, 10 Things I Hate About You is a clever romantic comedy starring Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. When Kat’s father declares that her younger sister Bianca can only date when she does, a group of other students pay Patrick to date Kat.

Although Patrick and Kat are the school rebels, their path to true love is remarkably wholesome. It includes paintballing, a marching band, and a class poetry writing exercise. When the truth comes out, it looks like the end for Kat and Patrick, but, happily, both characters are smart enough to realize that they’ve found their perfect partner.

7 Maggie & Ike – Runaway Bride (1999)

Ike Graham (Richard Gere) is fired from his job after writing a defamatory newspaper article about Maggie Carpenter (Julia Roberts), who has left three grooms standing at the altar. He travels to her small town to cover Maggie’s fourth wedding and set the record straight. The pair detest one another at first but, inevitably, soon fall head over heels in love.

Runaway Bride has a truly great – and wholesome – message: until you know what your heart wants, you can’t give it to another. Maggie has always tried to be the woman her fiancés wanted her to be, even down to how she liked her eggs, but Ike’s love helps her discover who she truly is.

6 Lucy & Jack – While You Were Sleeping (1995)

In While You Were Sleeping, lonely transit worker Lucy (Sandra Bullock) dreams of finding her soulmate. When she saves the life of a commuter, there is a misunderstanding at the hospital and everyone assumes she is his fiancée. Things become even more complicated when his brother, Jack (Bill Pullman), arrives.

Jack doubts Lucy’s story, but as the pair of them spend time together, feelings develop between them. It is a love built on genuine respect for one another, even though she is supposedly engaged to his comatose brother. Lucy lied because of her loneliness and when she falls in love with Jack, she finds not only her soulmate but also the family she always wanted.

5 Cher & Josh – Clueless (1995)

A modern-day retelling of Jane Austen’s Emma, Clueless is a snappy story of love and popularity amongst rich Beverly Hills high schoolers. Heroine, Cher (Alicia Silverstone), is much more than her vacuous ditzy persona would imply, and Josh (Paul Rudd) is one of the few people who can see that. Cher strives to be a better person and help those around her.

The romance between Cher and Josh is depicted as entirely wholesome. The audience doesn’t see them share more than an onscreen kiss. And Cher is okay with taking her time to find the right one: “You see how picky I am about my shoes,” she tells her friends. “And they only go on my feet.”

4 Annie & Sam – Sleepless In Seattle (1993)

Sam (Tom Hanks) is a lonely widower whose young son phones a radio show telling them that his dad needs to find a new wife. Sam opens his heart on-air and wins the hearts of women across the country. Annie (Meg Ryan) thinks he is the perfect man for her and sets about trying to make that into a reality.

Sleepless In Seattle still holds up today in many ways, but it has an unusual premise for a rom-com, as the two main characters spend most of the film apart, only meeting towards the end. When the two do finally meet, they learn that they are absolutely right for one another. It is a wholesome movie romance without so much as an on-screen kiss.

3 Simran & Raj – Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995)

In this Bollywood rom-com, Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) and Simran (Kajol) meet on a train when traveling in Europe. Raj tries to impress Simran, but she finds his cheeky humor and devil-may-care attitude annoying. Love between the two eventually blossoms, but Simran is supposed to marry another man as soon as she returns to India. Raj follows her to try to prevent the wedding from taking place.

Simran and Raj are an extremely wholesome movie couple in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge. Being Bollywood, they most express their love through dance. They want to marry one another, but will only do so if they have Simran’s parents’ blessing, and their happy ending includes the whole family.

2 Kathleen & Joe – You’ve Got Mail (1998)

Social media and online dating apps were still in their infancy when You’ve Got Mail, a sweet comedy starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, first played in movie theaters. Kathleen and Joe are online pen pals in an AOL chatroom, unaware that they already know one another in real life. Joe is the owner of a multi-national bookstore which is putting Kathleen’s small independent bookstore out of business.

Kathleen and Joe’s chemistry is electric, whether they are sparring face-to-face or pouring their hearts out to one another via the computer screen. The audience knows from the very start that the two characters will learn the truth about one another’s identities and can enjoy watching it all unfold.

1 Julia & Robbie – The Wedding Singer (1998)

The Wedding Singer is set in 1985. Adam Sandler plays a wedding singer who is jilted at the altar, and Drew Barrymore is a waitress engaged to a cheating idiot who doesn’t deserve her. The pair initially intended to be nothing more than friends, but it soon becomes clear that their feelings for one another run much deeper.

Sandler’s most successful movies are not known for their wholesomeness, and there are plenty of risqué jokes in this movie. But the relationship between Julia and Robbie is sweet and fun. And has there ever been a love song as wholesome as “Grow Old With You,” the one with which Robbie serenades Julia on the plane to Vegas?
