10 Movie Musicals To Watch Instead Of Hamilton (Again…)

You don’t have to give up Hamilton, but now’s a great time to experience 10 of the musicals that may have inspired the show in the first place.

The show Hamilton is epic. It’s award winning, and a game changer in musical theater as a whole. For anyone with Disney + it has been a much needed respite. However, just because it’s amazing doesn’t mean it’s the only thing out there to watch. This time at home can also be spent revisiting beloved musicals or expanding one’s catalog of musical knowledge.

This doesn’t even mean giving up on Lin-Manuel Miranda, it means experiencing some of the music that may have inspired him to start writing musicals in the first place.

10 Newsies

Newsies is one of those fun stories that, rather than going from stage to screen, was a movie musical first before hitting the stage. The story follows a group of newsboys who go on strike when they have their pay cut by one, Joseph Pulitzer. The great thing about Newsies today is that anyone can stream the original Disney movie (starring a singing and dancing Christian Bale) as well as a recorded version of the stage musical, Newsies: The Broadway Musical. So, just like Hamilton, it’s possible to see what the show would look like from Broadway seats.

9 The Greatest Showman

The most recent musical on this list is The Greatest Showman. Like Newsies, The Greatest Showman is and was a movie first. The original musical stars Hugh Jackman (Wolverine did get his start on stage in musicals such as Beauty and the Beast and Oklahoma). The music is catchy, the dance numbers and spectacle made for the screen and, like Newsies and Hamilton the show delves it to a little bit of history that surrounded P.T. Barnum. The movie also stars Zendaya and Zac Efron.

8 Rent

Like Hamilton, Rent was a groundbreaking musical in its time. The musical was sung through and used rock music in a way that hadn’t been seen on stage before (as of 1996). It explored provocative subject matter of the time, including the AIDS crisis. A recent Broadway production can be seen online. Also, director, Christopher Columbus, made a movie of the musical back in 2005. While it wasn’t received as well as the original, it did bring back most of the original cast and bring the show to a wider audience.

7 Kinky Boots

Billy Porter recently sang at the Democratic National Convention but, before entertaining delegates, and before starring on Pose, Porter was the star of Broadway’s Kinky Boots, for which he won a Tony for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.

Kinky Boots was originally a movie (not music) starring Chiwetel Ejiofor. It made a much bigger splash on the Broadway stage and is available to stream from Broadway HD.

6 The Sound of Music

Back before streaming The Sound of Music was known for being two VHS tapes long. Yet, the movie never seemed to drag. Starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer, The Sound of Music is one of the most beloved movie musicals of all time. The musical first premiered on Broadway in 1959 before jumping to the big screen in 1965. The classic story of a family with seven children in need of a governess and then desperate to escape the Nazis has music and action to enjoy.

5 The Wizard of Oz

The Wizard of Oz, like Newsies, was a movie musical long before it ever hit a stage. The classic 1939 technicolor film starring Judy Garland won Best Music and Best Original Song at the Academy Awards. It’s hard to imagine a world that doesn’t recognize the Tin Man or the ruby slippers. While not as game changing as Hamilton on stage, the film still makes quite a splash on home screens everywhere.

4 Chicago

Chicago opened on Broadway in 1975, with choreography by Bob Fosse. It was recently portrayed by Sam Rockwell in the Fosse/Verdon television series; the movie version of the musical was released in 2002 starring Catherine Zeta Jones, Richard Gere, and Renee Zellweger. Broadway has often been recognized as one of the best stage to screen adaptations of all time, translating much of the spectacle of live theater to work without being live or in front of a live audience. It won the Academy Award for Best Picture.

3 Moulin Rouge

Moulin Rouge premiered on Broadway this year. The Broadway show, however, was based on the musical movie of the same name that was released back in 2001. The jukebox musical starred Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor.

The film follows McGregor’s young Englishman who has come to Paris in 1899 to be a writer. He soon falls in love with Satine, a singer at the Moulin Rouge. She, however, has been promised in marriage to a Duke in return for funding for the Moulin Rouge. An intense and musical love story ensues.

2 Little Shop of Horrors

Anyone who grew up on films of the Disney Renaissance, including Aladdin, The Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast needs to find a way to watch Little Shop of Horrors. The off Broadway show was written by Howard Ashman, who went on to write the lyrics for the Disney movies mentioned above. The movie which stars Rick Moranis and a giant talking plant holds up incredibly well on screen despite the fact it was a puppet.

1 Singin’ in the Rain

Singin’ in the Rain was released in 1952. The romantic musical comedy stars Debbie Reynolds, mother of Carrie Fisher, as Kathy, a young aspiring actress who has a fabulous voice, and will be a great addition to Hollywood as films begin to transition from silent pictures to talkies. It’s like getting a behind the scenes look at musical movies, as the cast sings its way into making a musical movie.
